we know the lighthouse, aquarium, outdoor drama, and wright brothers stuff from some early study on this. If you know oof other must see or must dine things we would welcome there. We may fly a kite at some point to fullfill what I've been told many times here. Thanks

If you go out on Ocracoke, be sure to eat breakfast at Pony Island restaurant. Cheap. And piled high!

Here comes a long story...
I met my wife when I was at Clemson. I knew immediately that she was exactly the girl I wanted to marry someday, but I was young and wild and not marriage material. We dated for a few months and then I blew it. We tried again a couple of years later, with the same result.
In 1995, 5 years after I graduated, one of my Clemson buddies got engaged. He lived in DE, and the rest of us were spread up and down the Atlantic seaboard, so we decided that instead of having a traditional bachelor party, we would rent a house in Nags Head for Memorial Day weekend. Everyone was bringing dates, but I was unattached. My wife's brother suggested that I ask her, but I told him there was no chance she would go. He and his mom managed to talk her into going, on the condition that we meet up a couple of times to reacquaint ahead of time. I passed her test, and soon after we left St. Matthews with two jet skis on a trailer, making the 8 hour trek to Nags Head. The drive was a bit awkward...not much conversation. As soon as we got to NH, I fell immediately back in with the boys (and old habits), basically ignoring her. It was going very badly, as I was still an immature jerk.
A couple of days in, I was riding the jet ski in a saltwater impound. I was standing up, and hit a sandbar that was about 6 inches below the surface. I flew over the front, breaking the nose of the Jet Ski, and would have landed on my head, but ducked it under at the last second, and my right shoulder took the full impact. As I stood up, my right shoulder was several inches below the left. My collar bone was broken, and badly.
My wife, a nurse, immediately took charge. She rode with me in the ambulance to get my shoulder fixed, then took care of me for the rest of the trip. She had to help me dress, brush my teeth, brush my hair, etc. After a couple of days, it was time to go home. I was still hopped up on pain killers, and unable to drive. She loaded up the jet skis on the trailer and drove the 8 hours home. When we got back to my house, I knew she was going to be gone forever as soon as possible. Instead, she called work and told them that she needed to take another week off to take care of me.
Six months later, we were engaged, and the next summer, the whole group returned to Nags Head to celebrate us! 28 years later, and we are still married. I am a lucky guy.
Hope your trip to OB is less eventful...but produces lifetime meories like mine did.

I lived in that area for about a decade. There are some truly amazing spots. If you like real root beer check out Dr. Root Beer in Sneads Ferry. There are some fine dining options in Beaufort including Aqua Restaurant. In Morehead City there’s the Sanitary fish market and restaurant. Those options are from the start of OBX and along the way to Ocracoke Island. I used to set flounder nets from my skiff and would spend hours photographing the wild horses that litter the islands. The Blackbeard museum called Teache’s Hole is pretty awesome as well. Springers Point Reserve is stunning as well. The British Cemetery is kinda cool as well. Moonrakers has a cool tea shop and pretty good restaurant. You can make your own tea blend. Cape Lookout is probably my favorite area. The lighthouses are super cool. Some of the best shell collecting you’ll find. I’d also look into a golf cart rental. It makes travel around the island much better. There are more things to do in that area than you could exhaust in a months time. I hope your trip is awesome and the weather treats you well!

The Sanitary restaurant is more of a traditional calabash old school “fish camp” but have the freshest seafood available. Most everything is sourced from local markets and never frozen. It’s the best calabash style I’ve ever had. They also have broiled and a few culinary delights such as soft shell blue crab that is out of this world.

Check out the horses that roam free on the Northern end. If you have the proper vehicle you can ride on the beach and look for them yourselves without taking one of those tours.

This is the answer.
We own property on the water near Otway. Love that area along with Harker's Island. Due to the long drive we don't get out to check on it very often.
Lots of times we would be the only people walking the beach, shelling and fishing near the lighthouse. For a special treat head over to Shackleford Banks to hang out with the ponies. You don't have to look; they will find you. Special place like traveling back in time.
