You know what I noticed, is that music sounds way better on vinyl. Way better. You miss part of it on digital. There is a layer missing.

The real truth about digital music.

Dec 10, 2020, 8:03 AM

Not so fast.

If you are talking about MP3 format digital, then you are correct. The compressed data does lose a layer... maybe more.

Try FLAC or one of the other lossless forms of digital storage. You must get 96khz or higher and depth of 16 to 24 bit. The human ear cannot tell the difference between analog a digital if you go with these measures.

CD is only 44.1khz and 16bit so the compression still takes away a bit but not nearly as bad as MP3

The original conversion from analog to any lossless digital format has to be that high. You cannot increase the fidelity of a digital file from its original conversion format. Converting CD format to a lossless format does nothing.

A very good article.

An extraordinary video on the topic

Analog on vinyl is still likely the gold standard... but... vinyl still scratches and has to have extreme care. A lossless data file will sound as good (better over time probably) and last as long as the file itself is not corrupted.

How about playback? I have all of my music stored in lossless format on computer. (FLAC) Ever heard of a DAC (Digital to Analog converter) That little gizmo converts computer output into analog and serves as input to my old stereo as if it were a tape deck or something similar. Clean USB (or optic cable if you prefer) to the DAC. Normal RCA jack cables from the DAC to the preamp.

Don't knock it till you try it.

So speakers are better? I have a supposed amazing set of speaker. I bought the 2 a few years back for 800 bucks. That was half off. Place was going under. They are supposedly top of the line, but I never bought a receiver. I just never got them set up. When I get my new house I will though. Are speakers way better?
