Some of you need to decide if the NIT matters or not.

I’ve read a bunch of posts saying that the NIT is irrelevant we shouldn’t be playing in it, and the results mean nothing. I’ve even read posts saying that some of you won’t watch our game tonight.

Then I have also read posts saying that it would be horrible to lose an NIT game, and grounds for Brad to be fired.

Which is it, folks? Is this not an important tournament at all, in which case it doesn’t matter if we win or lose? Or is it so important that if we lose tonight, Brad should be fired for not having his team ready?

The payout for winning the NIT is less than the payout for losing in the first round of the NCAAT. It's irrelevant compared to the real tournament, but I still hope we do well. It certainly wouldn't reflect well on our team (or their coach) if we were to lose to a team like Morehead State.

But that FCS game does literally matter. If Clemson loses to an FCS team they don't go to the playoff. Even if the odds of them losing are slim, the game literally matters whether you take it for granted or not.

I’m fine firing Brad tomorrow if Clemson has decided it will pay a coach $4-$5 million a year who has had significant success at the high major level.

If Clemson wants to stay at the current salary range, I’d rather keep Brad, especially if it means we are committing to improving other aspects of the program.

There is nothing inconsistent about what I’m saying.

Mar 16, 2023, 11:27 AM [ in reply to In the same vein, you should decide if anything you say matters ]

Every year when imminent failure is clear, she comes out and says, "I'm open to change". But then she posts multiple tirades explaining how we have the best coach in the ultraverse, and he's only handcuffed by poor facilities and fans. As if either of those things, even if true (but they're not) are no excuse for poor coaching.

13 years is more than enough data. It really appears Neff is okay with mediocrity or worse, and crap like we witnessed (again) last night.

Season tickets will plummetz and this program has become an afterthought. Sucks because we have so much untapped potential. This coach is incapable. Let's face the facts here.

The NIT ONLY matters IF Clemson wins the whole thing. On top of being one of the worst snubs in recent years, you have the whole Brownell dilemma. There’s a tremendous amount of adversity for our program, and I think winning an NIT would absolutely mean something.

If you look closely, there are really good teams in the NIT often. Teams that often compete and win against the top talent in the nation.

But overall, Brad losing to Morehead St should really be the nail in the coffin for him. It won’t because of the announcement I guess, but it would make Neff look like an idiot. Who you agree with apparently.

Mar 15, 2023, 3:42 PM

That's easy enough.

It's not important in the absolute sense that even if we win we don't say we won a national title or anything. It's like a bowl win in football... it's nice but if you're not in the playoff? Meh.

It *IS* important for Brad and the team; if the goal was the NCAAs and we are keeping him because we think we 'should have been' in the tourney... then getting bounced day 1 doesn't really back up that assertion.

That being said, I'm of the 'if you're in it might as well win it' mindset myself.

It's horrible anytime the Tigers take the field (floor) and lose. I don't care if it's basketball, football or tiddly-winks. I suppose the feelings are that we have enough participation banners. I think it's been well (over) stated in this forum the reasons Brownell should be fired, win or lose tonight.

4

Mar 15, 2023, 3:52 PM

I think it is irrelevant to fans but I also think it can be a good experience for teams. I'm being serious about this next comment. We don't get a lot of post-season experience so anytime we have that opportunity we should take advantage of it. Everyone can benefit but especially our younger guys. We also potentially get to play some teams and styles that we might not normally see and that too can be helpful.

So, yes it is irrelevant but that doesn't mean it doesn't have any value for our team.

Mar 16, 2023, 6:11 AM [ in reply to Re: Some of you need to decide if the NIT matters or not. ]

I hate to say thanks for posting this. Cause I was really disappointed in losing that game back then. But that game was on my mind ever since we were named a #1 seed. There was a lot of similarities to that year, and this year regarding missing the NCCA tournament. Seeing the article again helped validate my memory of past performances.

Anyway, original thread asked does the NIT matter. I know a lot of fans say no. But for me, I say yes. I say yes because in the summer of 1997 I visited Clemson for orientation. I stopped by the old athletic building across from Littlejohn and saw the Trophy case room. It was a nice size room, and there was a lot, I mean a lot of Trophies for the football team. That said, there was a small, maybe a 30” wide cabinet in the corner that had a few trophies for our basketball team. It really was sad in comparison.

So, you have to accept that Clemson historically has not performed well in basketball. The past is the past. But we need to start building a solid, board foundation for the program. That’s why the NIT matters, or at least should matter to us. When you don’t have anything to begin with, you have to start some where. I would be proud if we could have hung/ hang banners in Littlejohn for those wins. It starts showing me that we beat the teams we should beat. We were so close with Shyatt. Brownell has had 2 really great opportunities, but we have squandered them. Not winning the first game on your court against an overmatched opponent is not good. And I am really disappointed in our coach for his/ our teams performance in this tournament. It was not worthy of his salary.

Anyway, another year in the books. We did win a lot of games. Hopefully next year will be better.

Go Tigers!

Unfortunately for Brad his job is to have the team prepared for every game, big or small. I know this is probably a surprise to you considering he is one of the worst coaches at the Power 5 level for losing to sub200 rpi teams. I can see why you might mistake his struggles as a coach for actual permission to phone it in against lesser competition. Hope the following help:

The NIT is a meaningless tournament. The results do, in fact, mean nothing.

Regardless, it would be horrible for Brad to lose a home game against a team that we dominate both in talent, resources, history, and ranking. All the things you insist determine the fate of a program (ironically, never coaching).

The tournament is not at all important. Brad should be fired for being a mediocre coach. Tonight should not matter at all. But since his job is to win basketball games and this opponent is over-matched in every regard he might want to try and give a little more effort than he did against Loyola-Chicago.

I'm sure to those schools, schools which have fairly low expectations, it was a nice reward and exciting opportunity to play in those bowls. Having low expectations, I don't think their fans care that much that they didn't make a more prestigious, higer-tier bowl.

Mar 15, 2023, 5:32 PM

It is like going to a lower tier bowl game. Not ideal, but there is potential for it to help in developing younger talent, getting post-season experience and sending out seniors on a high note.
Caught the overtime of Rutgers/Hofstra the other night. It was excellent...both teams trading baskets, full house crowd into it. Pretty hard to say it doesn't matter when you see that sort of thing. And Rutgers had been a NCAA tourney team recently (as we are aware from when they beat us).
I like how the NIT has evolved and is intentional about taking regular season champs of conferences that lose in their conference tournament. Those teams are usually pretty solid teams.
Programs like Michigan, Villanova, Oregon, etc. don't seem to have a problem with playing in the NIT...even though they certainly have high expectations.
I still think we got the shaft from the NCAA committee...but I think the ACC really needs to examine some things, not just Clemson. There's more to it than just the NET ranking.
I'm conflicted about being where we are 13 years into the Brownell tenure...but I'm a Clemson fan first and foremost, and will be ready to pull for us whenever we take the floor.

But the rest is a little dramatic…perhaps he wouldn’t need to say anything Monday if certain fans would chill out a bit.

The team matters. The practice matters. Playing games matter.
The nit does not matter.

It also matters so little that UNC declined.

Clemson winning in any sport at any time matters to me. I just hate that the best we can expect in men’s basketball is the not invited tournament. We should expect a top 25 competitive program in every sport.

There were people on this board saying the Orange Bowl was meaningless and they weren’t going to watch it. The same group will probably say the same about the NIT.

Certainly disappointing that we had to settle for the NIT...

Loosing to the last seed

Superior talent and a complete lack of discipline and coaching

Re: Some of you need to decide if the NIT matters or not.

Mar 16, 2023, 6:52 AM

I think the NIT is important. Hypothetically If we would have won the NIT that could have been a first in program history for this team. Could have been a banner in LJ.

We have only played in the NIT a handful of times. Its not like some tournament we are in all the time and we can yawn at its unimportance. Las vegas would have been fun for the team should they go to the semis.

Im just boggled by that game. That team was fairly small. I think we should have been able to win pretty easy. It seemed like the team got up early and just coasted. Maybe the NIT was not as important to the team as to the fans that showed?

I thought it was lame of UNC to bow out, but i guess if you dont plan to take it serious we might as well not accept the invite.

I think the real question should be: "Is Brownell the right guy to coach Clemson basketball?"

And we got our answer last night.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Screw Calford.

Any game Clemson plays in is important

1

Mar 16, 2023, 8:23 AM

especially a game against a Q4 team following a show of support by the AD all the while crying we were left out of the NCAA tournament. Anything less than making it to Vegas to prove the naysayers wrong is just typical Brownell.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Some of you need to decide if the NIT matters or not.

Mar 16, 2023, 8:58 AM

Nope

In the world of basketball, not all games have the same importance relative to rankings, record, etc.

However, every game is important in its own right. Every game should be prepared for and approached to win. Whether BB wants to do this or not, it is evident that he has failed to succeed in this endeavor in anything other than a mediocre way.

Frankly, in that light, JK your posit is completely irrelevant and meaningless.

Re: Some of you need to decide if the NIT matters or not.

Mar 16, 2023, 8:59 AM

I'm not in the camp of "fire Brownell right now," but these aren't inconsistent viewpoints at all. The NIT is a pointless tournament, because the winner really only has an argument that they're around the 65th best team in the country. It's literally a consolation prize for those teams not good enough to make the real tournament. If best is the standard, it's a long way down from our typical standards. Hence UNC finding it better to sit at home than going to play in it.

That said, if you do choose to play in it, and lose to the worst team in it, it's a pretty big black eye, because those teams weren't very good. We came in as the #1 seed and got embarrassed by the worst team in it. Even if there aren't a lot of eyeballs on the NIT, it still reflects badly on us that we can't win in the also-ran tournament.

Let's compare it to football. We are a team that made the playoffs in six consecutive seasons with multiple titles. We expect to go to the playoffs and compete. The bowl games mean nothing, as they have no real world implications any more. But if we went to the Duluth Trading Cure Bowl and got beat by UTSA, we'd want heads to roll. Something can not matter and still be embarrassing when you fail at it.

Re: Some of you need to decide if the NIT matters or not.

2

Mar 16, 2023, 9:02 AM

I thought it would matter to this team. I thought they would use it as an “I told you so” to the NCAA committee and try to prove them wrong. Instead, they proved the committee was right.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The answer you're looking for lies here...

1

Mar 16, 2023, 9:10 AM

It's horrible to lose a 1st round game as a #1 seed to a #16 seed.

What a disgrace. Terrible coaching, and just another pathetic performance in a long line of pathetic performances under Brownell.

You could give Brownell a roster full of NBA All-stars and he'd figure a way to make them consistently beatable.

As far as this message board goes, it must be nice to be personal friends with Crump. Unlimited BS and never get told to stop let alone receive what should be a ban for constant trolling.

Things like this are what keep the vast majority of folks here from donating. Uneven moderation and a (still) broken pulse system.

I like Tigernet. I'm not a cheapskate, and would love to donate to help the mods, but they have got to get better control on some things. Like Ms. Keller's incessant but allowed trolling.

2

Mar 16, 2023, 10:36 AM

Apparently, it didn't. Did it matter to Brad since Neff prematurely said he supported Brad? Apparently, Brad is tenured and it didn't particularly matter. Did it matter to the fans? Yes. Do they also know how bipolar the team plays? Yes. Are they embarrassed by the outcome? Some, yes; others, suspected this given the bipolar play of the team. Does a change need to occur whether it is players or coaching? Yes. Will the fans continue to support Brad? Most likely not.
