Some of the "holier than thou" people here on tnet
Oct 13, 2021, 9:27 AM

You're bashing Gruden and others for their sins yet YOU use the R word (that describes mentally challenged people) like its any other word.
You are as much of a POS as Gruden and others who look down on black people, gay people, etc.
We don't use the N word jokingly, why use the R word jokingly?
Mentally challenged people are born that way just as black people and gay people are born that way.
You know who you are. POS.
downvote away.

I'm not sure whom you're citing

I'm looking at the threads and can't see who has the wires crossed on this one.
I know you can't be referring to me because I've agreed with you multiple times that the R word is out of bounds.

You are not too many days removed from posting a really embarrassing OP about your behavior at a little kids' flag football game. Like, posted it because you thought we would all think you were billy bad ### and had the exact opposite response. I wouldn't cast stones too quickly.

to pounce. And when they do, they celebrate and slap each other on the back like it's some kind of victory. They know that by exposing yet another "R" in today's world, they will be validated, and they will find meaning in their lives. Pathetic.

I have a Down Syndrome nephew, whom I dearly love, and if anyone called him retarded or made fun of him in any other way, there will be a problem. Or any other mentally challenged person for that matter.
If I hear someone calling their buddy retarded for doing something that's not too bright, while I think it's childish and lazy, I don't necessarily think they are a POS.
A person could use the terms "special" or "mentally challenged" in the same way if they are using these terms to make fun of someone that was mentally challenged, and it wouldn't make it any better.

It is true that what's really important is the mindset

or attitude that causes one to speak in such a negative manner about a person. That's what needs to get fixed.
It's also a basic principle of language that some words are particularly stigmatic, for many complex reasons. Within the confines of the societies we live in, particular care should be taken to avoid them.

The word 'retarded' will probably be out of the mainstream lexicon before long, which is a good thing. I'm just not ready to call someone a POS for just saying the word.

You really shouldn’t use the P word. It is offensive.

I have a mentally challenged son and he hears those words at school so you could imagine why that word bothers me.
I have no doubt that the kids who use those words hear them from "adults."
Personally, I think even jokingly, it should be avoided.

I get where you are coming from. I just think the act of making fun of someone that is challenged is more the issue, at least in my mind.

“Retarded”

I support you in your opposition to the use of the word “retarded” to demean someone, but I would prefer we didn’t add to the list of “Words We Dare Not Type.”
