Solution to the new helmet rule..
Sep 3, 2012, 10:22 PM
|
|
We clearly saw the effects of the new helmet rule with Tajh Saturday night. Thankfully, the situations did not hurt us. But I think it is clear already that the rule needs to be modified.
First, because the rule could be devastating in certain situations (end of the game, team driving with less than 2 minutes, etc) the head coach should be able to call a timeout, which would allow the player not to miss a play. Similar to the injury rule, when a player has to come out for a play.
Secondly, we also saw that at the bottom of the pile players become dirty and rip it off like Auburn did, in order to make Tajh have to come out. I know this can't always be seen, but if a ref sees this it should be a 15 yd facemask penalty (even though the player is already down) and the player who rips it off should have to leave the field for a play.
Thoughts?

It is a reaction to all the lawsuits over head injuries. If the NFL was not being sued by 1000+ players, it would not be in place.

Offender needs to leave the game for the series and a 15 yd penalty if they intentionally rip a helmet off.

It should also be reviewable if the ref doesn't see it. A ball handler missing a play is too big a deal. I know reviews seem to drag out the game but I can see us getting screwed like that.

How about a soccer style idea for pulling off helmets?

First offense is a 15 yd personal foul (yellow card), second offense is ejection (red card). I'm pretty sure that would nip the problem in the bud.

hopefully it will get enough attention that if it continues to happen they will do something about it this year and not after the season. After the first time his helmet came off I said all they have to do is pull it off and make the player sit.

I feel like the new kickoff rules kills the momentum of a football game. And no one on our team should be allowed to exit the endzone unless your name is Sammy Watkins!

obvious attempts (as shown clearly in replay video) by Auburn at helmet-ripping...attempts that I believe were clearly sanctioned by the team and staff. Further, I expressed my belief that such could lead to injury and would probably become tactics adopted throughout the conferences unless the conferences, then the NCAA took immediate action to impose harsh penalties. My question to the ACC was simply: "What can or will the ACC do to address the matter?" I may or may not hold my breath awaiting a response. The point is until the public addresses the matter through the conferences, there will probably be no action taken by the NCAA, and, thus, I would encourage similiar e-mails, calls, etc.

IF a ref sees a player blatantly ripping a helmet off, said payer should be thrown out of the game. This would nip it in the bud real quick....

part of the helmet is off limits. Grabbing the edges and pulling a helmet off is a personal foul already, be it during or after the play. But the refs have to enforce it.

The solution to the new helmet rule is to call a facemask penalty when the an opposing player attempts to rip a helmet off. It's clear in the rule book.
