My only response is that they obviously haven't practiced that play enough to feel comfortable doing it in this situation.

The play is not without risk.

If your opponent is well-drilled on stopping it, you could end up getting that lead runner thrown out.

But of course, as you asked, why wouldn't Coach Rittman have had them work on it enough? ALL the SEC schools run it.

The defense will try for two and give up the run is my guess***

I have seen the play attempted but the catcher throws to the pitcher instead of 2nd base who then can throw back to the catcher in time to tag the 3rd base runner out.

Our runners do that all the time. Jacobsen only saw three pitches. He was likely going to send Bomhart next pitch. UNC likely wouldn’t have even contested it with the count favoring the batter.

plus if you steal second, they walk Jacobsen and set up a force at every base, thus making it easier to get the out at the plate as tagging the plate is an easier play than tagging the runner. Plus, with runners on 1st and 3rd and no one out in the bottom of the 8th inning, if the batter does happen to hit into a double play, no worries as the winning run scores any way. Had there been 1 out in that situation, the steal attempt would have made more sense, in my opinion.

It's a risk/reward scenario...

If you steal second, the defense can walk the next batter to set-up a force at every base.

Since there were no outs, even if the batter hits into a DP (provided the ball is not hit directly back to the pitcher), the runner at third likely scores. Had there been one out, I suspect Coach R would have sent the runner from first in an attempt to take away the DP.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.
