Softball coaching candidates?

Mar 14, 2017, 11:16 AM

The top choice should probably be Mickey Dean of James Madison who has Made JMU a top 15 program. One that threatens to make the softball World Series annually now.

I'll research some others

well, considering it's 3 yrs away from a hire

Good candidate: Coach Hawkins at USC Upstate. Has built them into a consistent winner and NCAA tournament program with limited resources. Also, a coach will be well before the fall of 2019. Must begin recruiting and building a roster. Not saying he will get the job but you can't deny what he's done over there in Spartanburg. There will be a national search I'm sure

There will be a national search, but with the softball

talent available in SC and the bordering states, I think it should be a local coach that knows the lay of the land and has HS ties already.

I like the USC-Upstate coach and Furman coach. Both have done very well. Upstate has an assistant(Bryan Pack) that's going to make a heckuva HC when/if he decides to leave Upstate.

Bryan Pack @ Upstate would be my first call. The coach at Furman has turned them around as well. Coach Pack is also engaged to the pitching coach at Furman.

Coach Hawkins would be the first coach to go after. He is a USC grad who has no love for them since they picked their current coach over him. He is a great coach and has made it a habit of beating USC each time they play. He has stated in the that he would love to start the program at Clemson. Pack is a very good coach but I don't believe has completed his college degree. Another coach to look at is Kelly Green, Coastal Carolina. She has won at each college level of softball and has 2 national championships in D2. She and her staff has done a great job at Coastal. She too has a habit of beating USC.
