Knew some player would kick off this NIL injustice from years past!

Reggie Bush wants NIL from 2005 from 3 entities to include USC, TV channels and whoever else his lawyers can point fingers at. If this gains any traction when NIL was not offered during his years even though he gained monetary inducements hence losing his Heisman Trophy during that time, this will open an absurd can of worms. I surely hope this gets shut down immediately.

Screw the current NIL and Portal landscape. And here comes Blufton and Arizona, 3..2..Bam!

This is the sort of thing that makes separation of the schools and the sports teams inevitable. The legal entanglements are going to become unsustainable.

It might finish off the NCAA.

The FBS schools aren't going to give up the cash cow.

More likely that it makes the schools...

I forgot about that. I think I commented exactly the same then when someone posted it. I surely hope it gets zero traction. Its already a mess, paying previous players before NIL legalization will destroy college sports.

He wants some reparations!***

As long as he claims all the under the table funds he received. The tax man will want his cut too!

And this is precisely why I have maintained a hard stance

against all this NIL and transfer portal horsemanure from the start...I suspected "Grandfathering" would rise to the forefront, sooner rather than later, with lawyers rushing into the fray like flies swarming around a fresh pile of cowsh*t.

The courts, NCAA, the conferences, schools, lawyers, student-athletes and the fans themselves are literally trashing collegiate sports, particularly football, right before our eyes. And what are the Ivies saying? "We told you so: the colleges exist to educate, not entertain!"

There is a five letter word that best serves as the root of the mess: G-R-E-E-D...the all-inclusive word that is the foundation of an olden adage: Money is the root of evil. We have set idly by, while allowing that adage to destroy what originally was enjoyable for generations. Which begs the question: what do we do now?

Either some brilliant leader has to rise like the phoenix from the ashes to tackle the imbroglio head on or we simply go the route of the Ivies: no conference championships, no competing for national titles, no bowl games. Schools play longtime rivals with ten games a year, then the season is over. And if the NFL wants players, then let them pay the price to get them.

So you want to the NCAA to get away with decades of exploitation...

2

Sep 24, 2024, 6:45 AM

...without any repercussions?

Greed? Like what drives the $11 million annual salary that Dabo gets while the NCAA tries to stop the athletes from getting a free cheeseburger?

That kind of hypocrisy is disgusting.

Fortunately, what you want isn't going to happen.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Many, many past athletes received free college educations, that they would not

Here you go. "Not paying fair market value" = exploitation".

"Nowhere else in America can businesses get away with agreeing not to pay their workers a fair market rate on the theory that their product is defined by not paying their workers a fair market rate
Under ordinary principles of antitrust law, it is not evident why college sports should be any different."

"The NCAA is not above the law."

...and their ongoing battle to save their lawbreaking model.

The FBI should open a RICO case against the NCAA.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They should figure out something akin to how musicians get paid for songs....

Sep 24, 2024, 1:29 PM

One of the things about Reggie Bush (and a host of older players)...is that there is still money being made off of them today....whether it's a ESPN Classic game, conference network channel documentaries, or old highlights during current games, even the old video games of yesteryear. Reggie Bush is kind of a lightning rod due to his past...but any other player could make a claim.

Maybe it makes sense to set them up like musicians. Think about every time you hear Steve Winwood in the grocery store...I assume somewhere he gets a dollar or two.
Doug Flutie should get paid whenever they show his hail mary highlight.
Or whenever someone is the answer to the Aflac trivia question, they should get a little $.
Every time ESPN classic shows an old game...those guys could get paid a little.

But otherwise, yeah, this is the problem that was bound to happen....they jumped into the NIL game without fully exploring broader consequences....this is one of them. I assume this lawsuit could lead to a broad settlement of some sort....but that is a lot of players, a lot of sports, etc. to consider.

Just wait until Title IX gets involved
