So what should he have done?

Nov 8, 2014, 8:17 AM

I am interested in what the ACC would have defined as the correct action Robert Smith should have taken on the tackle. The Defender has just made a catch to secure a 1st down and he is there in time to break up the pass with a hit. Maybe he should have hit him below the waist which probably would not have made him drop the ball.

How does a defender make an opposing receiver drop a completed pass without hitting him hard in the chest area?

From both playing and watching football for many years, I truly believe that going low on hits like that tend to increase opportunity for far more serious injury to the receiver. Smith flips him if he hits him in the legs and potentially lands on his head. Broken neck, concussion, etc far more likely in that scenario. The whole safety movement in football has been out of control. It wasnt a big issue until pro programs went renegade (with many college teams closely following suit) to steroids and other PED's and allowing these kids to become physical freak beasts. It shouldve been handled then by telling programs and kids that if you get caught, you're done with competitive football period. Nobody wants to see a kid get hurt, but it's gotten quiet ridiculous.

Knees out. That would have been a good clean legal hit. The guy would have suffered a worse injury but forget common sense.

“I love this place. I’ve got a spot already picked out where I want ‘em to put me when I die…up there on there on that ole hill near the stadium. I want to be there so I can hear all them people cheering my Tigers on Saturdays. Then I wont have to go to heaven. I’ll already be there.”-Frank Howard
