So, Murphy on the sideline or no?

Dec 15, 2022, 8:18 AM

I respect Murphy for his contributions and I understand his decision. However, this team has one last game to play and he has chosen not to participate. As far as I am concerned, he is no longer on the team. He may have no intention of going to Miami. I have no idea. But I would not allow him to travel with the team or be on the sideline. What say you?

I don’t think he can. I’m sure he’s signed with an NFL agent

Not sure signing with an agent bars him from hanging around

Dec 15, 2022, 8:22 AM

It just bars him from further competition as a college athlete.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think back in the old days when you secretly signed

Dec 15, 2022, 8:23 AM [ in reply to Re: So, Murphy on the sideline or no? ]

with an agent and were caught, you we just rule ineligible to play. You could still stand on the sideline.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I say NO

Dec 15, 2022, 8:27 AM

I don’t agree with his decision - but he made it. He should not be able to receive the benefits without being a true part of the team.
Injury is one thing, not playing with your team is something else.

How can you not agree with his decision. He is a top 10 maybe 15 NFL Draftee. What is your issue with his decision.

I think the idea is that you've made a commitment to play with your teammates until the last whistle, the same teammates who made it possible for you to get drafted in the first place. Myles ultimately chose himself over them, despite the fact that a huge bowl win would make some of their lives. That's indisputed. It is a selfish move. I ultimately get it and would probably do the same were it me, but it's still selfish.

Seems you don't understand Clemson or college football right now. The powers that be created the rules and the kids are living with them as is the University. I would think Myles might pay his own way and or the school lets him attend.

You don't have to like it, but respect the program and the young man.

That’s right. SMDH
This kid could go in the top ten and sign for millions of dollars (all guaranteed), or he could risk catastrophic injury and get picked in the 3rd round. I like his decision. That’s life changing money for him and his family.

But you think he should entertain you. Are his teammates complaining? I think they know what the deal is.

I guess because some us come from a generation where our parents taught us to finish what we started and to honor our commitments - to not do so is abhorrent to us.

We also remember a time when all top NFL draftees always played through bowl season as the idea of quitting on their team by opting out would have been viewed by the NFL owners and coaches as an undesirable trait in a player. Unfortunately the NFL doesn't care about such things anymore and as a result neither do a lot of the players that opt out.

I have no ill will towards Murphy and wish him the best. While I understand his reasons for opting out I still have no respect for his decision because no matter how it's characterized the end result is the same - he is voluntarily quitting on his team.

To answer the original question - heck no Murphy should not be on the sidelines for the game.

My exact thoughts. As you are a retired Soldier and I a retired Marine, I have used this analogy several times. Neither of us ever opted out of a fire fight or an assignment that could have cost our lives. Not because we thought of ourselves as martyrs or heroes, but because we would have never let our fellow Soldiers and Marines down. I recall is Basic School listening to a Marine Captain who had been called back in during Viet Nam and going straight back into combat when he was not in as good of shape as he would have liked to be. He was leading his company on a march in the jungle and was so weak he could hardly move, but said he would rather die than fall out and not be able to lead them to their assigned place. The thought of not doing something with my teammates is totally foreign to me! If Dabo allows him on the sideline, then I will lose a bit of respect for him ....... although Dabo can't always say or do exactly what he thinks.

ONLY if they do a special segment with highlights of his best plays to help shop him to NFL teams.....otherwise, No.

opting out = quitting***

There's something in these hills.

I doubt he'd ask or desire to, it's too soon, but Clemson

Dec 15, 2022, 8:32 AM

very often has ex-players on the sideline during games both home and away. It seems he's leaving on good terms, so I'm sure he'd be welcome back anytime.

Not sure how being on the sideline in Miami is helping him prepare for the NFL.

So, Murphy quit the team

Dec 15, 2022, 8:39 AM

Why should he be on the sideline?

Kalinin Hyatt will be on Tennessee’s sideline.

The Old School in me says

Dec 15, 2022, 9:06 AM

No. If you’ve elected not to play then you’ve abandoned your team and don’t need to be on the sideline as a potential distraction.

However, to the coaches and players this is their teammate, their brother, and their family. . .those are ties and bonds that can’t be broken. MM has been an amazing person, athlete, and representative of Clemson University. It’s easy for us as fans to get a bitter taste in our mouths with these decisions because we want to always be in the best position to win. It becomes personal to us.

I’ll support Dabo’s decision here because ultimately he has the full story that we don’t. I look forward to seeing MM do great things in the future and wish him all the best!

Dec 15, 2022, 9:10 AM

Just like a transfer player I would not allow him to be on the sidelines. It becomes a big distraction and the tv cameras will put on a story about it. Under no circumstance would Inallow him to travel with the team. Let him watch from the stands.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hahaha, I’m imagining him asking Dabo

Dec 15, 2022, 9:14 AM

Pretty sure that’s a hard no

Not sure why he would want to anyway

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If I'm the head coach...

Dec 15, 2022, 9:21 AM

you can bet your last dollar that any player who opts out of the bowl game absolutely will not be traveling with the team to the game. Maybe that's just me.

Re: So, Murphy on the sideline or no?

Dec 15, 2022, 9:26 AM

No! I don't know who or what got into Murphy's head this year. He played a good part of the year missing in action. As you remember on more than one occasion Dabo had to call him out for his lack of effort.

Dec 15, 2022, 9:55 AM

Why would Clemson pay to bring along an EX-Player? Spend the money on someone who's going to contribute on defense, special teams, or even during practice leading up the game. Murphy knew the consequences when he made his decision.

I hope he gets drafted high, gets the money and has a long successful NFL career. He decided he is no longer playing for the Tigers.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would say No. Like someone said respect his decision and

I think you have to ask the team in some way - What do the people playing the game want ?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: So, Murphy on the sideline or no?

Dec 15, 2022, 8:17 PM

Nothing against Murphy but I'd tell him not to come. I thought Pitt having Kenny Pickett in box with headset on last year in bowl game was a bad look. Maybe I'm just old fashioned tho. I get why the players are doing it but I still consider it quitting. You can tear your ACL while training as easily as in a game

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: So, Murphy on the sideline or no?

I don't think he will. Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with it if he wants to
