Clemson and FSU are on opposite sides of the portal spectrum. Norvell can’t recruit high school players, so he solely relies on the portal, while we only rely on high school recruits. Ideally you’re somewhere in the middle where you can recruit and develop your guys, while also being able to bring in talented players to cover any recruiting misses

It’s really saying how bad you are when you can’t recruit at a place like FSU. Not only do they have huge brand recognition and a winning tradition, but the boosters are also willing to fund however much they need to in order to bring in big recruits.

FSU’s not a good team. Yeah, they surprised Bama opening day and did look the part. I also think it was ty as well.
Not sure if Tommy's hurt or what, but what I've seen is what I saw tonight. Make him beat you with his arm... but he can scramble. Bring pressure and make him make a quick decision, and he's not that accurate. He's a baller but his receivers didn't help him a bit.
I'd really say he and cade are similar.

No confusion, it's simple. A, you must have the right coaching. You can have the best players but are they playing as a team? Are they in the right spot? Are they reading the play correctly? B, you don't build a team through the portal, you fill holes. FSU tries building a new team every year. They have no consistency.

Notice how our blitz packages are, the majority of time, very predictable.
How many times last night with we go with a zero back-end / 7 man on the LOS blitz look in which we rushed 6 and one LOS guy dropped about 15 yards deep at the moment of the snap?
FSU repeatedly missed opportunities when facing this blitz.
Maybe it was great coaching on Clemson’s behalf, recognizing that Shrimpy Castellanos wouldn’t be able to see over the wall of humanity and was constrained to stay in the pocket because our outside blitzers kept Shrimpy from scrambling wide.
It worked last night. Not so much vs Duke and their tall QB with the accurate arm. I’ve got my doubts that it will work vs LOU and S.Carolina.
We’ll find out soon enough.

Don't be confused. Dabo's nose up at the portal is the reason Duke hung 50 on us last week and beat us for the second time in 3 years. The Portal helped LSU,GT,Syracuse and SMU all be better than us.

Certainly our not using the portal to get better is an issue but we have other problems. We had neither a functional offense or defense which is coaching. We also have motivation issues which is S&C and coaching

There was no portal when we won our national championships. It started in October 2018, and no player would be eligible to play that transferred until the 2019 season.

You need to do both recruit HS players and "strategically" use the portal. FSU brought in 37 portal players this year. That is way to many. Dabo needs to continue to recruit HS and then each year sprinkle in 10-15 portal additions depending on roster conditions.

"the" answer. Some have made it out to be the end-all-be-all, rather than one element that needs addressing. I think the conclusion you came to Saturday may be a recognition that the portal is not the end-all-be-all, but that, of course, doesn't mean it isn't relevant, lest we bounce back and forth between the poles of a false dichotomy. And that's just me observing the from the outside. I'm obviously not in your head and don't want to put words in your mouth.

Coaching just needs to be tweaked with some portal to fill positions as needed. The portal is a short cut for teams that cant recruit or honesty coach up.

I don't know why people are so ####### stupid on here. There's a huge difference between recruiting well but using the portal to fill in positions of need if players aren't performing, and trying to build your entire team through the portal every year. If you do the former, you'll always be better off, unless you're literally recruiting 5 Stars at every single position (not 3 and 4 like us). If you do the latter, sometimes you can hit a homerun and be great. But more times than not, you won't have a consistent team identity and will struggle.
You can look at our team. For whatever reason, our defensive line has sucked for a couple years. We brought in Will Heldt. He's our top defensive lineman this year. He has more sacks than Parker, Woods, and Lawson combined.
I don't know why this is so difficult for you people to grasp.

The vast majority of your recruiting should be high school kids. No fall backs, that's when the portal should be utilized.
Teams like Colorado, FSU and LSU this year go or went to heavy on portal players. That's a hard thing to make mesh into a good football team.

Because a "foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds," they consistently declare with gusto that the problem is not with the portal, it's with the friends and family coaching staff that cannot coach up portal players. But since they're already better players, because they're from the portal, should they really need to be coached up?
