So Herbie doesn't like Cole's chances in a hostile

Aug 20, 2014, 9:07 AM

environment due to his lack of experience.

Ok, got it.

Did he mention any concern for Hutson Mason playing against what most would consider the best D-Line in college football (even with suspensions)?

No, because their enviroment is going to intimidate our D.

I can't wait...the espn homer announcers will be stuttering by the end of the first quarter.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hope he's wrong & believe that he is, but

Aug 20, 2014, 9:18 AM

his opinion isn't unreasonable & it wasn't a slight at Clemson. He said he thinks we'd be favored at home, & hinted that we might be better favored later in the season.

Embrace the underdog role and let's go prove him wrong!

I definitely think we'll embrace the role and come out

Aug 20, 2014, 9:24 AM

swinging. I just found it interesting that he didn't mention Georgia's QB going up against a stout defense.

They are basing it on history. Historically, teams that open on the road vs. a ranked opponent do poorly, and Clemson is no exception.

The Tigers are 9-11-2 in true road openers to kick off a football season.

Clemson has not played a true road game to open a season since 2002, a 31-28 loss at Georgia.

Clemson is 1-5 at Georgia to open a season, with the lone win being a 29-0 victory in 1903.

Clemson last won a true road opener in 1985 at Virginia Tech as David Treadwell kicked a 46-yard field goal with no time on the clock for a 20-17 victory.

This year's season opener at Georgia marks only the fourth time since 1985 that Clemson opened the season with a true road game.

This year's season opener at Georgia is only the third time since 1903 that Clemson has opened the year at Georgia (2002, 1982).

Clemson has won only one true road opener since 1969 and is 1-4 in those five games.

I'm really not seeing the controversy in Herbie's statements

Aug 20, 2014, 9:17 AM

if you took off the jerseys would anyone really make a different analysis especially on the offensive side of the ball?

Our QB will be making his first start, on the road, in a hostile environment.

Their QB, who is also old, but but got significant meaningful playing time last year, will be playing in friendly confines.

We lost one of the best playmakers in the country which will put more pressure on our untested QB.

They have one the best playmakers in the country coming back taking pressure off their QB.

Now I think the whole Pruitt will automagically change UGAs porous defense a bit of a stretch.

His comments about Clemson may be fair,

Aug 20, 2014, 9:22 AM

but I did notice that he failed to mention that Georgia also has a QB starting with limited experience, and it's not like we are fielding a bunch of scrubs on defense.

You may be right about Mason playing ok in friendly confines. However, if Gurley wasn't enough last season to help Murray win the game, then I don't necessarily think it's a given that he will be enough to help Mason.

Herbie is right in one way ..... if the Clemson offensive line can't protect Cole it will be a loooong night for the Tigers. I am hoping we are that good in the OL and we will soon know the answer. By the end of the first quarter we will know how good we are up front. So goes the season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We might have some offensive struggles, sure, but

Aug 20, 2014, 10:27 AM

I think our defense is good enough to make up for that and keep us in every game this season.

With that said, the UGA line is going to have to keep Mason on his feet as well.

Should be interesting.

I don't think it impacts UGA as much as it impacts us for two reasons: one, their greatest offensive weapon is a proven running back, which takes a ton of pressure off a young QB. Two, it's a LOT easier to start your career as a QB in front of a friendly crowd. I'm confident in Stoudt's poise and ability, but making your debut in front of 85000 people who hate your guts for 4 hours is nervewracking for anyone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No doubt that it will be a tough task, but

Aug 20, 2014, 10:49 AM

would you agree that our defense should be good enough to possibly cancel out what struggles occur on offense?

I think there's a really good chance of that.

Hopefully

Aug 20, 2014, 12:00 PM [ in reply to No doubt that it will be a tough task, but ]

But Gurley will be the best back we face all year (and probably the best back we've faced in several years). THe only thing that stopped him last year was his hamstring. When healthy he pretty much steamrolled everyone he played.

But on the flip side, our front 7 will be among best he will face this year.

Mason has also started big game already

Didn't do all that great, but he's started.
