My guess is because it is unusual that there are that many white guys on the court at the same time. It would be the same if there were a majority of African Americans on a college baseball field. It is just out of the ordinary.

Haha. Not at all. I'm more conservative than you could ever dream of. However, why should we point it out like whites can't play basketball? What does it really matter? That is the question. I don't personally care what the color of your skin is. I just want to see a good game, which is what I got. However, thanks for your well thought comment "Ibewritegood."

I am terribly curious however, as to why so many people are uncomfortable when race or skin color is mentioned, as if it is some kind of taboo. So far nobody has given an answer.
The original poster in this thread simply pointed out something very unusual, and it happened to have to do with skin color. There was nothing even remotely offensive or insulting about it, yet some people took exception to it. Some ask "why does skin color matter - why even point it out or comment on it?". It doesn't "matter", but it is an oddity, and I'm just asking why can't we mention it? If some other odd or unusual thing occurred, we'd talk about it - whether it "mattered" or not; but for some reason, when it has to do with race or skin color, apparently we are supposed to pretend we don't notice, and if we do, we sure as heck aren't supposed to mention it. And that matters to me because it's that kind of nonsense and inability to talk about it that underlies and perpetuates real problems relating to race and racism in this country.

Alone it raises the issue of race. That is how the human mind works. When you make a statement regarding heredity and crop over it with something that places people squarely at odds then you can expect to raise a few eyebrows. What I find particularly amusing are the folks that seemingly seek this type of rhetoric to post about anyway. Aren't the Gamecoots enough folly that we don't need anything else to harp on ?

Ask a child to describe a person ...
Mar 30, 2014, 8:58 AM
[ in reply to The absurdity is that we can't ask a perfectly reasonable ] |

My children use words like brown, tan, spotted (freckles), white, pink, black, curly, straight, tall, short, puffy, skinny, soft, and even squishy to describe people. They use phrases like - they are like me, they are darker than me, they are lighter than me, they are bigger than me, they are smaller than me. They even ask about things that look unusual - like, why are those boys showing their underwear or why does that girl have rings in her lips.
Nevertheless, it doesn't make a difference in the world to them. They are just trying to describe a person or point out something they notice. There's something very innocent about it. It's unfortunate that I'll have to tell them one day soon - they are getting older - that they aren't allowed to say things like that.

I'm not sure what you mean by "proud of your race"? What "race" are you? What race is anyone? Have you done a complete geneology on yourself? Are you "pure"?
What race are you proud of? White people? White is just a color and has little to do with race.

I played basketball in HS and all of my life in church leagues or in my back yard. My dad played for his HS in Biloxi MS and my mom was a 3 yr letterer at Rock Hill . I guesswhen someone points out that they do not see white people on a basketball team as something that is abnormal or just worthy of a mention it makes me wonder how much basketball do they see ...or have ever seen for that matter ? Growing up on Navy bases and being around a truly multi cultural mishmosh of people has probably left me with that exceedingly rare inability to notice another's ethnicity as anything more significant than their choice in coffee brands. It just seems like being devisive suits a lot of people and I am always one to wonder why.

race when there is a perfectly good, understandable reason for doing so?
Seeing that many white guys playing on the court at the same time may not have been unusual on naval bases, but it is highly unusual at this level of college basketball, and therefore it's understandable that someone might notice and therefore comment.

talking about skin color as if it has some actual definitive value. 2)My father is also one of those people who, in spite of the fact that he does not have a racist bone in his body, feels compelled to mention the fact that there may be quite a few white kids on a basketball court, which always makes me cringe a bit. There are lots and lots and lots of places in the U.S. where there are not a ton of black kids in the recruiting pool. Even some pretty strong programs don't necessarily have a huge number of black kids to draw on.

How many teams playing at this level start this many white players and have this many white players on the floor at the same time? Not many - it is very unusual. It has been noticed by others, FYI:
Frank Kaminsky on How Arizona Would Describe the Wisconsin Badgers: "White Guys"
"So, no one on this Badgers team has the raw upside potential of Arizona’s Aaron Gordon, but it’d be selling them very short to presume they’re just a bunch of stiff white farm-boys."

Distinctions
Mar 30, 2014, 12:38 AM

Distinctions. Groups and belief systems. The human struggle for dominance and resource aquisition. I was playing hoops with some ethnics and someone mentioned our differences. Before that devisive inclusion into our friendly game the only difference was shirts or skins. Nobody says a thing about the color of our shirts . I notice that people notice this type of thing a lot on TNet. If regards to a subject like this are somewhete near polarity , then its a safe bet that there is no good reason to pretend its a non issue .

Well Tigerdug, if we are all the same and we should never use skin color as a distinguishing factor (ex, there are 3 white guys and 2 black guys playing bball), then why do we have affirmative action? Our own federal government in the year 2014, not 1950 still have policies in place that do nothing to judge a man on his charachter, they judge him on skin color only

This thread should be used as "exhibit A" when introducing evidence of why the racism issue in this country will never be solved
The main reason of course could be cited back to Frederick Douglas when he explained there is a portion of the minority community who need race to be divisive. It's big business!
But the second reason is right here in this post. Someone can't even observe an oddity and express it without immediately having his intent questioned. You can't even state a fact without someone calling you a bigot.
Well guess what folks, the more we refuse to talk about the real issues behind the plight of minorities, the more it will persist
I saw someone say "what does it matter what skin color they are?". Well it doesn't matter but I would ask that person 2 things: 1. Was the statement that was made true? 2. Are you any better when you have insinuated that persons post had malicious intent without knowing anything about him?
Get real folks...political correctness is a joke
