Anyone else listening to Walt Deptula?

He says the QBs since 2021 have been the primary reason we are “only” 9th in wins the previous 4 seasons, and the reason we are 1-4 this season.

It just doesn’t work with a barely pedestrian QB. No matter who the coaches or players are, no program succeeds at the higher levels without having a QB to execute the offense. It all matters, but nothing matters like the QB.

I think that’s irrefutable. Just sayin.

Go Tigers.

Please keep in mind that Walt "the moron" said that DJU would win a Heisman when we signed him, and in the pre-season this year he said Cade would win the Heisman. The guy is clueless

It’s not truly a point for debate if you understand the QB is THE most important position on the field, and if he doesn’t do his job the entire team suffers. Did you notice receivers dipping their heads and getting frustrated (again) on Saturday? Poor QB play affects the entire team, including the defense. You can have whatever opinion you like, but Walt is right on this one. I don’t understand how anyone could argue otherwise honestly.

The QB has been the main issue (by far) affecting our program since 2021. Almost every loss since 2021 can be attributed to not getting it done from the QB. And this season we’d be at 3-1 and possibly 4-0 with better play from the most critical position on the field.

When seeing DJU go up against Notre Dame filling in for Trevor Lawrence.......then a year later we didn't see the DJU that was calmly slicing up Notre Dame in a close loss . We got a statue instead. DJ U looked like he had gained somewhat better mechanics at Oregon St. Then after a stint at Florida St. he miraculously squeezes out an NFL opportunity.... though not on a main roster....but got a good look.

Cade on the other hand has been in this system of ours a little longer than DJU ....but just appears to be running for his life...not seeing open receivers ...throws to high on certain throws when he shouldn't be. When he got his big shot in against N. Carolina in the ACC championship game..... that Cade had obvious adrenaline pumping through his body.... fearless ... and made decisions and lived with it during the game. He actually outperformed Mr New ..New England Patriot quarterback Maye.

Now I know level of play may change once people get film on someone....and maybe that is what has happened to a degree....but the other side of it is that he is not developing to his full abilities for the time that Cade has been here. The coaching just doesn't seem to elevate these players lately. NIL doesn't seem to elevate effort and passion .....it just elevates tax brackets and status.......if used the right way that is.

I'm not really buying this development business. Uiagalelei didn't look any better at Oregon State or Florida State then he did here. You can't blame that on development by Clemson coaches, because if that was the case the coaches at the other schools should have developed him better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly. And too Cade played far better last year than his Sophomore year.

So clearly he has been taught how to play the position.

DJ was DJ, period. At 3 stops, he never progressed beyond what he actually was.

It’s not development.

Michigan didn’t seem to have an issue doing it with a non elite QB in McCarthy.

Ohio State had no issue doing it with a non elite QB in McCord.

The issue is that along with subpar QB play, Dabo has built a roster that is filled with guys who shouldn’t be playing football at this level and/or talented guys that he has surrounded with a coaching staff completely inept of developing them.

You can win at a high level without an elite QB, it just takes building a high level roster around them of talented guys, who have been developed to their maximum potential or to play better than their initially slated to.

But that would require a coaching staff who actually knows what they’re doing and how to develop the guys they have on roster as well as attacking areas of need in the portal.

And yeah, “just because a QB is playing or starting in the NFL, it despot mean they were good in the first place”.

Dude, the NFL is the best players on the planet. The NFL doesn’t draft and even start the best QBs in the country.

You were completely wrong about Howard and McCarthy. They actually help prove my point - you CANNOT be a great team in today’s game without a great QB.

It’s actually kind of silly to argue otherwise. You see that now, right?

Check McCords numbers and Howard’s numbers.

You’ve lost focus. If ANY team doesn’t have agrar QB then they are not going to be great.

The offense isn’t a coaching issue at all. The defense played well enough to win every game except one where they didn’t play winning football and received no help at all from the offense.

Yet again, almost every loss we’ve had since 2021 was due to not having the QB play great. You can pine and specukate and make unsupported comments about coaching and players all you want, but none of it means a thing when you look at the true issue.

The defense was good and even great before last season, which unfortunately was the only season of the last 4 when the QB played (mostly) as needed. Otherwise it’s been all about the QB.

Obviously you have to have at least average QB play but that wasn’t the point of the comment or discussion.

It’s a conversation about elite QB play and the past 2 national title winners haven’t had an elite guy at the helm.

We can go even further than that though.
Stetson Bennett was not an elite QB.
Max Duggan was not an elite QB.
Yet both of them guided their team to a title game and/or title.

Even with average QB play, Clemson still doesn’t have the pieces in place to compete at the highest level.
There are holes throughout the roster. Which was the point of my comment.

Having a non elite QB is something that can be overcome if the rest of roster is up to task and the roster Dabo has crafted, due to bringing guys onto the team who have no business being there and the staff he’s put in place to develop the actual talent we do bring in, isn’t at that level.

It’s going to take a legitimate fundamental change in his approach to get Clemson back into that conversation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Stetson Bennett also played great and elite his natty year.

So far you’re 0-3.

Howard was great
McCarty was great
Bennett was great

There really is no need for you to keep swinging and missing.

No teams are great without a great QB. The end.

We haven’t signed a bunch of portal guys because we don’t lose any starters to the portal (literally one starter since the portal) and we don’t kick starters or anyone off the team. That, and the better players don’t get in the portal to be depth somewhere else. Too, nobody is changing their trajectory through the portal. Elite teams have remained elite. Everyone has more transfer than us, and they are forced to get other guys in the portal. That doesn’t mean they are getting better and in fact could net out worse. The portal has not been a problem whatsoever.

We addressed poor coaching and let those guys go. No other position other than QB has been costing us games.

I’m not sure who your misses are, but every team in the country has some misses.

The QB is front and center of “only” being 9th in wins the previous 4 seasons.

That, and we’ve literally had the same issues of not seeing the field and missing open guys and inaccuracies all over the field, since DJ.

You don’t need to be a generational WR to get open and provide a target for the QB. However, you do need a good QB to execute the offense and get it to those receivers.
