Skeeter Syndrome

Incredible skeeters live in the South. Near me is the famous 'Clemson Skeeter' :
Actually skeeters are not much problem in my yard as my garden ponds are better than anything one can buy as to keeping them in check. Like all, I sometimes still get bit as I am outside most of the day.
What have yall discovered to be helpful?

As I get older, skeeters seem to be more attracted to me. This time of day until dark, I hate to go outside because of them.

We have a service that sprays our yard every 3-4 weeks.

ZERO skeeters. None. I'm one of those people that without some kind of such strong prevention, could literally not even walk to the mailbox from June-mid September without getting bit multiple times. When our kids were younger, they could not play outside without being eaten alive. Forget having a cookout or doing much of anything outside. Since we started having the yard sprayed years ago, problem completely solved. Best $$$ I ever spent.

If you live in the Lowcountry, you are going to have skeeters no matter what. Those mosquito traps work pretty good. Also if you just want to hang out on patio area you can't get any better than those Thermo-cell lanterns. Put 2 on a patio table or in an area of 15x15 and they work wonders but they are temporary and not a method of control.
I have been in the Alaska Arctic Tundra in the summer and fall several times and there is nothing like that! The mosquitoes are so bad you cant breathe unless you have a net or use your teeth as a filter. Saw them so thick that they actually gave you shade, horrendous! Fortunately their bite doesn't seem to burn, itch or welt like the Lowcountry skeeters.

possums, etc., and I've never seen any evidence of a casualty. They do recommend keeping pets and small children out of the yard for 30 min following a treatment (until it dries). We have bird feeders and they do not appear to be affected. For what it's worth, the spray kills ticks and fleas as well, which our dog appreciates greatly.

While your “cement pond” . . .

has turtles and frogs (one of which will feed on skeeters), you may need a few fish to help control them as they develop in that breeding pool . . . the lake is another matter altogether . . .
Spraying near any body of water can be an issue as most “skeeter sprays” are deadly to invertebrates and fish . . . back when I spent a lot of time outside, I use to “fog” my shrubbery with cypermethrin or sumethrin every few weeks . . .

I’ve had good luck with Thermocell

When it’s just me a put it on the deck a foot away from my chair and covers me from ankle to head.
If a few people are over I put one under the table for bottom half and one on the table for arms necks and heads.
Also keep the mosquito dunks fresh in the birdbath and bog garden

We planted lavender, basil, sage, mint, thyme, marigolds and rosemary in pots on our deck and can enjoy sitting outside anytime we want to. No skeeters!

My ponds are not cement. I have many fish. The lake is not a source of skeeters. Nothing I know of is as good at controlling skeeters as a garden pond.
I have bought the big ones that use a 20lb propane tank -> waste.
Fish and frogs and turtles are a million times better.

Ellie was fond of her critter too . . . is why the reference was made

Skeeters are bad when hunting too. I have started to shoulder my gun when they buzzed in site.

They eat me up and always have. I read that your blood type and scent have something to do with it. Supposedly they are more attracted to people with O type blood and also the scents of some people are more attractive to them. Lucky me!

Try drinking gin & tonic or vodka & tonic. Don't know if it'll help you or not. Years ago, the military discovered the benefit of tonic water or quinine to ward off mosquitos in the battle against malaria.
Nowadays, it's said that there's not enough quinine in tonic water to do any good - and the reason it was developed was to treat malaria, not ward off mosquitos.
All I know is that I drank vodka/tonic for many years and didn't have the problem with mosquitos that others did.
