NBA is losing its luster

Have seen others talking about the NBA finals game 7 tonight. I am/was a huge basketball fan growing up high school level pick up basketball college and NBA i was a basketball fanatic.

the bottom line is the game has lost its luster for the most part especially the NBA, i know others like me would watch the NBA finals no matter the teams playing, i hated both the 76rs and Lakers back when shaq and kobe won there first, but i watched everygame. same with big time college. but now days i take in the premium games of the NCAA tourney and thats about it.

didn't even feel like a game 7, no nervous energy like the old days. I do think a big part of the issue is how rich these guys are, theres no rivalries with anyone, these guys now days try to fake it for awhile but mainly just for extra attention. Greg Popovich one of the best coaches ever in the NBA said "there is no beauty in the game anymore" a few years ago and he is right.

Players like Shaq, David Robinson, Rodman, Bill Laimbeer, john stockton, magic johnson would have not near the influence in todays game because of how it is officiated and promoted ( positionless shoot 60 3's) the game has lost all personality and rivalry and like pop said beauty.

Was very excited for the game tonight until Haliburton went down with that terrible injury. OKC was basically handed the game at that point.

Have not watched an NBA game in years and do not plan to ever again. When we lived in Houston, we never missed a Rockets game and their players were the pillars of the community and looked up to by everyone. Those mid-90's teams with Clyde Drexler, Hakeem Olajuwan, Kenny Smith, Sam Cassell and Robert Horry were special. Not a bad citizen in the group and even crazy Charles Barkley joined them for one season, which livened up the locker room and the fan base.

After that time, I became disgusted with the woke political views and prima donnas in the NBA. Have no use for them in my life!

I understand nostalgia for what feels like a grittier, more intense era of basketball, I do, but you are overlooking some aspects of today’s game that are incredible and maybe blaming the idea that wealth has eliminated competitive fire…have you watched Giannis, who STILL plays with raw emotion despite his success, or the intensity of Tatum or Luka in crucial moments, not to mention Lebron Steph or how Halliburton played this entire playoffs!!!!
The game has evolved, not declined and the players are more skilled than ever, what’s wrong with the average player being able to handle the ball, shoot threes, and make plays that only point guards could make decades ago. Pace and athleticism are at historic highs and what might feel to you as less intensity might actually be players being smarter about when to expend energy in a wicked long season, plus playoffs that can stretch another 30ish, AND some of these dudes played in the Olympics also. How many games has lebron played in his career????
And rivals exist but look different like everything else in the social media age. Players are more connected off the court, but I do t believe it diminishes their desire to win, did you see Haliburtons face when he went down, like immediately? The Celtics/Heat battles, Warriors/Cavs era, and competitions between today’s stars remain compelling to me, hearing the trade news this morning psyched me up for next season before the game 7 tonight (which was plenty intense for me) The “beauty” Popovich referenced, in my mind, has shifted from pure physicality to chessmatch strategy and better skill displays. Watching Curry or Dame or Halliburton tonight on two shots in the first pull up from 35 feet or seeing teams execute complex offensive sets has its own “beauty.” Pop had a stroke but is still trying to be a part of the spurs franchise, game can’t be that bad.
I’m 50 and have realized with most things that what I remember as “better” isnt necessarily so, it’s just different, filtered through the warm IPA induced glow of my memory and my changing relationship with life as I age.

I’m 35 and the games simply aren’t as entertaining. I’m not sure why. I think part of it is non stop jacking up 3s.
I feel the same way about the mlb. I used to watch every Braves game. Now I can make it a few innings.

Im not sure why people want to argue that watching a game that looks eerily similar to a game you'd see at the local YMCA (although admittedly at a much higher level) is somehow superior or even close to previous eras. The teams cross half court, pass the ball around the perimeter a few times and jack up the first relatively open three they can. I can watch that crap on any local basketball court. No thanks.

"what’s wrong with the average player being able to handle the ball"

The handling IS what's wrong. It's horrendous. If the refs called palming violations like they're supposed to, there would be 150 turnovers every game. Nearly every highlight I see (I don't watch games anymore) there is one or more totally egregious, hand completely on the bottom of the ball like you would hold a bowling ball, violations that go uncalled. That's not skilled. It's a blatant rules violation that the league ignores because it creates offense.

And with the Euro step and the gather dribble you can basically take 4 steps without it being a travel. And block/charge is way more in favor of the offense. Moving screens are rarely called. They should be able to score at ease. That's not being more skilled. It's the rules being changed or ignored. Except for 3-pt shooting. They are much more skilled at that, but that doesn't make for a better game, especially when you have to watch all these 'dribbles' that are uncalled carries before getting to the 3 pointer. Would rather just watch an actual 3-pt contest.

Stopped watching around the time Larry Bird retired. All of the chest thumping "look at me" theatrics, poor defense, lack of passing, etc ...made it unwatchable. Once Jordan retired I stopped paying attention on the internet.

I haven't watched a game in 30+ years, but it like they're losing fans again.

its a boring brand of basketball.. very hands off and sanitized

i assume the officials call more ticky tack fouls is maybe the reason. The players dont' seem to have any personality or flair. The only hard nosed player out there is draymond green...really? That dude would get bullied if he played against Rick Mahorn or Bill Laimbeer. Not saying I'd rather see a boxing match as a basketball game but he seems like he's putting on an act moreso than being a gritty tough player himself.

The stars today are few and far between compared to the previous eras. I'd put maybe Jokovic as the only real active stud. Giannis would translate well. Lebron is falling off and is just a diva. He's a great talent but his demeanor is porcelain-esque and you can't pull for him and feel good about it. Steph Curry is fun to watch when he gets on run but I think he's starting to age out.

That game last night was like watching two average teams in the 80s and 90s. Alot of hands off jump shots, alot of bricks and well.. sanitized and boring is the best way to describe it. I'm guessing had Haliburton not went down it would have rounded out but is he really the story for it lacking. I don't know. Its a culmination of constantly rotating teams with free agency, touch fouls, and unattested jump shots, hoisting threes because you're scared to drive, and no personalities. been this way for a while now. Probably not going to change.

If you had been around long enough to have watched the great games of the Celtics, 76ers, Knicks and others from back in the 60's and 70's, you would know why we don't watch today. The league is all about individuals today and when the rules of basketball were suspended to allow players to take as many steps as they wanted, my viewership was suspended too. Play true basketball and maybe I will watch more than just a minute here or there.

its simply a comparison exercise between products. BTW I don't really know why race has to be injected into every topic on the planet but that is a product of what has been injected into our youth for the last 15 years as the top rationale for explaining all outcomes. Its played out hack and is boring at this point. Its possible race plays a role in maybe 2% of the naysayers but i would hedge my bets on the actual product and the excitement or lack thereof as the culprit. The racial mix of the league is no different than what it was 30 years ago.

"Bigger than ever before"...? Not true. Maybe bigger in budgets and reach but the product is nothing close to what it was in the 80s and 90s and the early 2000s. My hunch is its probably b/c of free agency and teams not being solidified as long. LEbron jumping from team to team or lobbying for other allstars to join his cast creates muddying of the waters and decrease fandom is my guess. That will probably never return therefore we're probably just stuck with what it is. The NBA finals used to be an awesome event. Must see TV. Now its like watching whatever random G-league game on ESPN ocho.

The NBA today is great. These finals were tremendous. It’s a shame Halliburton went down because that did make game 7 a bit less compelling. Not the product on the floor is much, MUCH better than it was decades ago.

OKC vs Indiana is weak anyway as far as hype. The Lakers suck now, but if it would have been Lakers vs Knicks it would have been more hyped up. The players weren't that interesting with either team in this series. Moving forward I think the Spurs will be interesting in a couple of years. They are stacked with draft picks over the next 5 years.
