NIL and player hunger
Sep 26, 2021, 9:32 AM

Everyone assumed that NIL would just make the elite even more elite. However are we seeing an opposite reaction right now early on? Several “top teams” with some of the largest NIL earners are struggling right now and there appears to be more parity than previous seasons.
One factor that people may not have considered is how it could create a lack of hunger for the top earners and give some extra motivation to “second tier” teams (like NC State, West Virginia etc.) it’s just human nature to take a step back, even if you don’t realize it, once you reach a certain goal. In this case the goal being getting paid big money.

After the first 4 weeks of the season, I’ve switched to Popeye’s and Mr. Pibb.

Prepare to be landblasted for speaking what I think is common sense.
You can't overstate how important the mental side of the game is. These NIL deals HAD to screw with these players minds.

I think the parity was caused by the free redshirt year due to COVID-19. Teams that don't recruit 5-star guys and have to rely on development are benefiting from it, such as undefeated Wake Forest.

Clawson could win a Natty with the players Clemson has right now. Man knows how to coach.

6th year 3star that has played might just be better than a freshman 5Star.

My opinion in our Clemson Tiger's case is: There are people on the team that have two National Championship rings. There are even more people on the team that have one National Championship ring. Now this unproven rookie QB comes in and gets hundreds of thousands of dollars in endorsements. There has got to be jealousy, envy and even contempt for this. Justyn Ross had several key catches in one National Championship game that put us over the top. Nolan Turner and Skalski had impact plays in our last National Championship win.
What has DJ done? He's not even average at this point. But now he's dressing in designer clothes made by the most expensive brand names. He looks like a clown and the other players don't like it. Especially his protection and weapons on offense.
Think about it. Why would you risk injury for him? Why would you play your best for him? It's ridiculous. And as Mike Tyson would say. "It's LUDICROUS".

This! Dabo recruits a certain kind of player and historically this is not that kind of player. DJ’s behavior is not appreciated by the other team mates who are not about themselves. Dabo has a real dilemma. DJ now is not the kid Dabo recruited and he needs to do the obvious thing and bench the NIL out of him.

Agreed. I knew we were in BIG trouble when I saw the pic of the zute suit, fedora hat and gold chain with Big Cinco........OH Lord. This is not Clemson AT ALL. Hopefully he will move on to a better situation and let CK do what we do next year.

In some ways, this is probably the worst of times. It's been a huge shock to the system for players who got big deals, and those whose teammates got huge deals

Disagree. Every team in the country has players earning money through NIL. You can’t use it for an excuse here when teams like Georgia and Alabama are kicking ### and cashing checks, too.

These players all worked their butt off

I’m amazed by the defensive efforts were still seeing. Skalski sacrificed his body to beat GT.
If these players had a chance to score 100 they would do it. We’re not putting the offense in position to be successful. We have no chance
This has nothing to do with money. Our offensive scheme is a joke

I’m not prepared just yet to say the NIL is causing problems but it sure is worth observing. I had this very conversation today. Look at UNC. Preseason Heisman candidate, top 10 ranking and we absolutely suck. Why? Team chemistry due to a few players making pro salaries? Maybe.
