I got a letter in my mailbox from SC District Court

Jan 21, 2022, 9:40 AM

it was my correct address (so mailman delivered correctly), BUT it was addressed to a person I didn't know or ever heard of, and not even a close resemblance to my name. I've owned and been living in my house for almost 15 years, so former residence isn't really possible. I STILL get a rare junk mail addressed to the owner before me, but a different name. He had to give them a false address, or some other mix up happened.

What do? Open mail? If I throw it back into the USPS machine, it just comes back to my house again.
So I open it.

This person has a court date set for Feb 3rd. It doesn't say what the charges are, just states "Mr X vs. State of SC". The threat is written there: If he don't show, he gets a arrest warrant issued. So if I throw this letter in the trash, this probably happens.

I did a Google search of this fellow (he has a pretty unique name). Oh, he's been arrested for meth in SC, in TN, in GA, in Alabama over the last 10 years. Mug shots displayed. Complete stereotypical f-up. Whitepages.com sez he lives in Lafayette, TN (pronounced la-FAY-yit, I used to live in TN). Provides address, age, etc (more if I paid and signed up). Pretty easy to tie all the info together - all this is the same guy without doubt. Why couldn't the state of SC have some office flunkie Google his current whereabouts? Took 2 minutes.

Anyways - I ask the Lunge - what is my next step? What would you do?
I think I'm gonna call the Clerk of Court and tell them. Even though the ####### probably doesn't deserve it. Be a *sigh* good citizen. Right?

Call the Clerk of Courts, tell them what happened, you

Jan 21, 2022, 9:42 AM

automatically just opened the mail, not really paying attention to the addressee and see what happens.

This is your chance to become judge, jury, and hangman.

DON'T WASTE IT.

Call Clerk of Court AND the Sheriff's office

Jan 21, 2022, 9:49 AM

They may not necessarily communicate with each other very well, although you'd think they would. You don't want po-po rolling up hot on you trying to serve a warrant for the guy. He may be giving your address for whatever reason when arrested, maybe he grew up there or something. We've been dealing with something similar for 3 years because of the former owners crackhead son.

I have a similar problem with my phone.

Jan 21, 2022, 9:50 AM

I get text messages all the time for.... shall we say "Samuel". The other day an attorney said my phone call came through as "Samuel Smith" on caller ID. I'm like ###. So I eventually got a spam email for Samuel asking if he wanted to sell his palatial estate in Eutawville, SC. Tax assessor showed it was owned by Samuel Smith. I need to call Verizon I guess and have this fixed. Sux that my caller ID was hijacked. Shows my cell number as his phone number on Google and other records as well.

Go ahead and confess and go for plea bargain. I mean, as long as it's not in your name.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I could mail the letter back with "EFF U" marked across it

Jan 21, 2022, 10:22 AM

in big black Sharpie. That would be good for extra added lulz.

But, as for a serious answer

Jan 21, 2022, 10:17 AM

Call the court and the Sheriff.

I had a bunch of heavily armed police show up at my door at 6AM one morning when I was living in Indianapolis. Looking for someone who had never lived at that address but somehow they had our house as his last known address. Pretty intense situation considering I was getting ready for work and noticed folks at 2 of the windows looking in and we didn't live in the best neighborhood. I though maybe we were about to get invaded. Glad they knocked and showed a badge at the door prior to use going into panic mode.

Hey scooter, did you end up doing anything today about this?
Interested to hear about any response you got or will get from law enforcement.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yes, I called the Clerk of Court

Jan 21, 2022, 8:08 PM

started convo with "I got a letter from you and there looks to be an error". Explained that address was correct but didn't know the person listed, I had lived at address for over 10 years, etc. Her first response was "you opened the letter?" I said heck yes, it was from the state court and had my address on it, of course I am going to open it, I'm certainly not going to throw it in the trash.

She then asked and I read her the case number and other info (court time, etc) off the letter. She said OK thanks, her attitude came across like it happens 3 times a day. I said "That's it?". "Yes, thank you."

Left me with a bit unsettled feeling.
