Should the US be boycotting the Olympics? Why or Why not

I believe it should be a decision left up to the athletes. However I would definitely support a boycott. The conditions alone for our athletes would justify this. On top of everything else going on, I don’t see how the US team could support this hosting. It’s unfortunate these competitors dedicated so much of their life to have to compete under the Chinese government. It reminds me of the old karate movies where the USA guys go over seas to compete against a stacked deck. Hopefully our guys and girls will win the overall medal count.

I absolutely agree it should be left up to the athletes.
We are boycotting nbc coverage of the games. I'm sure it won't matter, but at least we won't be an active participant of the Chinese Gov. PR campaign.

I haven’t watched a bit of it and won’t. I was wondering about the money though. I figured the investment’s already been made and the ad spots filled. Like you said though at least we won’t be subject to the propaganda and home cooking in the judging. Maybe if enough people don’t watch, it will at least make the IOC think twice in the future before giving an Olympics to a corrupt country like China. I doubt it though since the IOC is completely compromised just like the UN.

100% agree- the athletes are the ones that put in the hard work and training for these events, They should decide if they stay or if they go. I decided that I will not watch them.

Yes, should boycott. I remember thinking it was wrong when Carter did the boycott. But all the changes in "who" can participate and flexible gender designations etc has kind of dampened my enthusiasm. I'm totally sensitive to folks choosing how they want to interact with the world but sad about changing rules in sporting events (particularly non-professional athletes.

Sorry, My comment is off topic and not related to why I think we should boycott. Just one reason why it doesn't bother me as much as in the Carter days.

The United States is leading the gender nonsense. We going to boycott China for something we started and championed?

China oppresses people, they stand for what we are totally against like slave labor, voter suppression, birth control, mysterious disappearances of those who disagree with their government and probably gave birth to the virus that has killed millions but won't let anyone investigate.

I believe it should be a decision for the athletes. The boycott that I would like to see is forbidding NBC to broadcast in the good ole USA!!

And if they aren’t on TV here, just how do the athletes profit? At some point, principle has to overrule the individual glory of the athletes, or we can just pretend everything is fine so the athletes can check all of the boxes to get rich. The fact is: The concept of the Olympics is long gone. Everything about sports is now about money and fame. Most of the athletes hate the USA, they just wrap a flag around themselves for the photo op… Another fact: Traditionally, winter athletes had a real job and trained when they could. Now, it’s a full time gig and they absolutely do get paid to train. I remember when I found out that “amateur” Carl Lewis was living large while training - so it has not been an “amateur” event for many years. So why have the Olympics continued to exist? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I am on the fence. In the end I say no. Let's just do well there in sports, but realize we have to do better in the real world and globally to compete when it comes to real issues. Boycotting would be a novelty.

These athletes train nearly all their lives for this moment. They don't just get the big sponsorship money like football and basketball and soccer so they need Olympic moments to get these sponsors to continue to be able to train and survive. This is on the IOC for giving the Olympics to communist China. They put all of the world's athletes in a very difficult position.

That’s a good point. The people who lose the most if we boycott are the athletes.

Sadly it’s the truth.
I used to care when it was ostensibly reasonably amateur athletes competing and winning against the odds.
I’m not sure what it is now, but it’s not what I used to love.

I hate punishing US athletes because the Olympic Committee

chose a ruthless, oppressive and cruel country to host the Olympics. Instead, what should have happened was the moment the Olympic Committee gave the slightest indication they were looking towards China for this years Winter Olympics, the democracies of the Western World should have all banded together and let the committee know that China as host was "unacceptable" and steered the Olympic Committee to somewhere else.
But unfortunately, China is in the pockets of almost every Western globalist power broker and too many are all too willing to go along with the CCP and conveniently ignore their cruelty so long as the money and access to Chinese markets continue. The CCP is a cruel and ruthless regime that should be shunned by all modern democracies but instead is treated with an indifference (if not respect) of which they are neither deserving or entitled.

As a nation I don’t think so. It’s not fair to the athletes who have worked for many years to take away their dream over political and social reasons. Likewise I don’t think athletes should use their sport for political statements. If individual athletes don’t want to participate, that’s fine.

They should absolutely be boycotted! The Chinese government is criminal; they commit human rights violations with abandon and nobody cares (especially against the Uyghurs where they have actual concentration camps); the country is controlled by the Chinese Communist Party - a dictatorship; China hates the US and is our biggest geopolitical/miltary enemy; there is no democracy - just look at what is going on in Hong Kong.
This is akin to participating in games with Nazis under Hitler! On top of all that they are the country that created Covid in a weapons lab. If the Olympics is not a "super spreader" event, I am not sure what is. There is a reason that NBC and ESPN did not send their people to cover these games.
By participating we are approving of this horrendous regime and our politicians in the US have been bought off. America could have made a statement by not participating but sadly did not. Time to wake up!

I would have had no problem with a boycott but, as others stated, would have hated it for the athletes that trained and qualified for years.
My biggest concern now is when the U.S. starts blowing China out of the water in the medal count, China will impose their own U.S. boycott by having the U.S. athletes fail their COVID tests to make them sit.

1948 Clemson Grad, William Funchess, Korean Veteran and POW, was tortured, starved, placed in isolation, beaten and called a war criminal for ripping down pictures of Mau and Kim Jong-un's grandfather from the POW indoctrination building, throwing them into a latrine and deficating on them, as well as, calling the Korean and Chinese officers at the POW Camp, daym liars. He and thousands of other Americans didn't go through that for Nancy Pelosi to say shut up and keep your thoughts to yourself.

I think the blue states, their voters, and D.C. should participate. They share the same core values as Communist China, and it's a cozy relationship.
Red states and their voters should probably boycott.

Absolutely, don’t understand how anyone can support or overlook the fact that there’s concentration camps in China. I use to wonder how in the world hitler was able to get so many people on his side and now realized that sadly it isn’t that difficult.
