Shakin The Southland perspective that got it right.

Nov 28, 2012, 9:04 AM

(No toughness)There were some mind-numbingly frustrating events Saturday night that I just can't shake. Andre Ellington getting blown up by a Gamecock defensive back and not ONE Clemson player came over to pick him up or push the USCe DB out of the way. Where's the fight? tough (tf)
adj. tough·er, tough·est
1. Able to withstand great strain without tearing or breaking; strong and resilient: a tough all-weather fabric.
2. Hard to cut or chew: tough meat.
3. Physically hardy; rugged: tough mountaineers; a tough cop.
4. Severe; harsh: a tough winter.
5.
a. Aggressive; pugnacious.
b. Inclined to violent or disruptive behavior; rowdy or rough: a tough street group.
6. Demanding or troubling; difficult: skipping the toughest questions.
7. Strong-minded; resolute: a tough negotiator.
8. Slang Unfortunate; too bad: a tough break.
9. Slang Fine; great.

In case you didn't notice the rest of the team was doing their job blocking downfield then getting back to the line to run another play.

I agree with the lack of toughness...

Nov 28, 2012, 9:09 AM

But that's a poor example. Officials were on that situation right away.

Brandon Ford however did cover Boyd with Clowney on the last play of the game.

I don't think our coaches force our guys to be tough.

and over again.
the team quits on dabo when they are hit hard.
Like hatfield and bowden, he will never field a physically dominating team.

Looked like we physically dominated them during ...

... "The Brawl". Was that good or bad? Either directly or indirectly, the effects of that highly publicized event are still governing the outlook of our administration and by association, our coaches and players.

I pointed this out yesterday, someone should have thrown the jerk to the ground or blind sided him...but just like last years WVU game, it seems like the Clemson players are too nice. Football is not a nice guy's sport, you have to play mean, angry, have an attitude. This is what made the Steelers, Raiders and Bears stand out in pro football. They did not take any crap and if you cheap shopt one of their teammates... you better have your head on a swivel....because one was coming.

STSL: "The Home of 20/20 Hindsight"

Nov 28, 2012, 9:14 AM

Very knowledgable folks writing for the site and they are more than willing to apply that knowledge liberally ... after the fact.

Apparently adding unbridled profanity to after the fact commentary increases the credibility by an impressive margin.

Now that Dalton Freeman has finished (like Antoine McClain) who will be their whipping boy *every week* next year?

sounds like you are happy with out team getting pushed all over the field at the end of every season.
we need a coach that is going to specialize in smash-mouth football ala danny
Make them afraid to come to the valley.
You can pick out one special player if you like. we need a bunch of bad ##### on the field, especially in the trenches.
and I don't recall anyone mentioning dalton specifically.

I don't disagree with the general sentiment of the STSL writers (and Tiger fans in general) that we could use more toughness as a team and staff. I just get tired of the way the STSL writers express their point-of-view.

I think they know a LOT about "Xs & Os" and are very adept at looking at flim for a couple of hours and picking apart a game plan that didn't work and finding fault with certain players in certain situations.

If you think they haven't singled out Dalton Freeman almost every week for criticism, then you just haven't been paying close attention.

There is no doubt, we had some really tough guys on the team in the 80s. We also had some criminals and borderline psychos.

In fairness, it is very difficult for a D to be tough when they practice against a qucik, spread offense every day. Scout team dont count.

Re: Shakin The Southland perspective that got it right.

Nov 28, 2012, 11:11 AM

I respectfully disagree re: hard to have a tough defense practicing against high-paced spread offenses. Look at Oregon. Their defense is tough, stout. Look at Auburn when Malzahn was there. They ran the same system Morris runs (roughly) and their defense was tremendously tough that year.

Re: Auburn defense

Nov 28, 2012, 11:34 AM

The box scores show that Auburn gave up 24+ points per game the year they won it all. If not for their offense (read Cam Newton) they lose several games that season because of the defensive liabilities. Perhaps their defensive players were 'tougher' than ours, but they still didn't defend all that well.
