It is an absolute must we go to the portal big time for the 2026 season. If we are not successful in the portal I’m afraid we are looking at another losing season in 2026.

High school recruiting has gone south for everyone. HS recruits mean nothing I don't care what kind of 5 star you get they can not compete with a 3 star Junior from the portal. If you do get a 5 star he will leave after 1 year for more money somewhere else. HS recruitment is a losing proposition now

I have always viewed going south as a good thing.

I grew up in the SC Lowcountry. My job took us to Ohio and PA for too many years. Any time I could go south it was great feeling. Then I got the opportunity to move back to SC and it was a great thing.
If going south is such a bad thing why do so many Yankees move down here and stay?

Exactly my thoughts!***

Lots of 4 stars and even 5 stars don’t pan out. It’s too risky to offer loads of up front money to these kids. Unless they are can’t miss. And some schools that’s what they have to do to compete. It’s way more cost effective to recruit a decent class that’s motivated. The money will come once they produce. Add in some portal players that have already proven themselves. At least that is what we are told Ohio States strategy is. Also, it’s not the worst thing to come in 2nd or even 3rd in a recruitment. Sometimes a 2nd opportunity comes around to recruit them.

It's a maturity thing

While female gymnasts can peak as early as 14-18 yrs old, male football players tend to peak in mid to late twenties with exceptions for some teenage prodigies (incl. Herschel Walker, Bo Jackson, and Trevor Lawrence). 24 yr old Diego Pavia at Vandy is a great example.

There's a new college career for players lacking the talent to play NFL ball but can lead top college teams to championships. Late bloomers could serve 4 years in the military, then play 5-6 years as matured college ballers.
