Is a slew summer to a "mess". My grandfather would always say "we don't keep the fish unless we catch a mess". I asked him what a mess is, he says "more than a few". Still don't know. All I know is if we caught two or three we just throw them all back if we caught 20 we'd have a fish fry.

A mess is enough for one meal. So, if you don't catch a mess of fish, there is no need to bring them home and clean them. And, once you've caught a mess, no need to catch anymore.

Just look up 24/7 list of de-commits by school. Do each year Kirby has been there and add it up. Nearly 50 have “de-commuted”. That’s is what he does. They commit. He finds a better player, and forces the other ones out before signing day.
No one says anything because most of them are from the state of Ga and none of the HS coaches are gonna say a thing.

When a GA fan says this it means it is more than he/she can count. I didn’t open the article but according to the smaller print below the headline on the link it is 5 (which is probably being generous to most GA fans).

This needs explanation. A slew is a but load and may be relative, a mess is indeed enough to feed the family, thus worth the MESS of cleaning fish, shelling peas, shucking corn, etc. What are they teaching at Clemson these days? Of course, I knew all of that when I enrolled, it was the air foil and enthalpy that confused me. Now, I have a mess of bicolor corn I need to shuck. This is important stuff and should be worked into your vocabularies.

.... I can tell you what a slew is in South Georgia. Terms like "mess, slew, bunch, oodles" are very regionalized, so I can't vouch for these definitions being accurate in north Georgia or in Clemson.
mess - enough for one meal. "I'll bring back a mess of fish....Go out to the garden and pick a mess of beans....Help yourself to a mess of maters before you go home." A mess can vary in size depending on how many people need to be fed.
slew - numerically, more than a mess. But, slew is not usually associated with food. "Bammer committed a slew of penalties, but the refs didn't call half of 'em....I lost a slew of golf balls out there today."
oodles (often used twice "oodles and oodles") more than a slew. I might lose a slew of golf balls, but it would take my entire foursome to lose oodles of balls.
Note: "bunches and bookoodles" is even more than oodles.
Hope this helps.

Which is less than a slew. I think.
A #### ton is more.
How about “wad”, I think “wad” is synonymous with handful, like when you’re eating good BBQ and you ask someone at the table to hand you a “wad” of napkins.

... here is what voculabulary.com says.
https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/mess%20hall#:~:text=There's%20often%20a%20separate%20area,%22food%20for%20one%20meal.%22
******** If you join the army, you'll get to know the mess hall, which is also known as a mess. There's often a separate area for officers to eat, known as the officers' mess hall. The term comes from an old meaning of mess, "food for one meal." *********

Let me rephrase … Is it good recruiting philosophy to offer

high school freshmen?
Never mind offering a “slew” of them …
If you offer a high school freshman a scholarship, and he says yes, then what do you do if/when much better prospects become available a couple of years later?

You yank his offer, tell him to kick rocks, and take the better player. Kirby does it a half dozen times every recruiting class.
