there wasn't such an emphasis for professors to have a PhD. Today, you wouldn't get a sniff from any self-respecting college/university without a PhD.

The degree of Doctor of Humane Letters
Dec 6, 2012, 3:14 PM

is always conferred as an honorary degree, usually to those who have distinguished themselves in areas other than science, government, literature or religion, and should not be confused with earned academic degrees awarded on the basis of research

My grandfather was a 1924 graduate of Clemson A&M College and a charter member of IPTAY
Someone in my family (my grandfather, my father or me) has been an IPTAY member since the organization's inception
I earned two degree from Clemson (BS and MBA)
I am also a member of the Tiger Letterman Association playing soccer from 81 to 85.
I also worked with the team as a Grad Assistant from 86 to 88.
My oldest daughter is currently a freshman at Clemson.

my love for and loyalty to Clemson will not keep me from speaking out when there are areas of concern or issues of mismanagement by the school administrators. In fact, I consider it my responsibility.

I know Clemson gave out an honorary doctorate in humanities at last spring's graduation, guess that's sort of the same thing.
