Schedule "weakness"

Aug 7, 2016, 8:35 AM

I have seen some criticism here and there of Clemson having a weak schedule. Aside from the fact that FSU is top 5 and Louisville is top 25, you can't legitimately fault Clemson for any perceived weakness in the schedule. When the home and home with Auburn was scheduled, they were pretty darn legit with a recent national championship and having played for another. Furthermore, we have to play SCar every year. We can't control the fact that they have slipped back into the gutter they crawled halfway out of.

Go Tigers!!!!!

only weak opponents! Why should we be blamed for their inability to maintain their program's strength?

It's possible to play 2 of the best 4 teams in the country for the ultimate prize. I don't care how you get there, just get there!

When you look at the ENTIRE season, it's a difficult road. 12 games and a conference title game plus playoffs. 15 games total. I mean, last year we played 4 or 5 top-10 teams. That sounds pretty rough to me!

Sorry, coots, we can't play everyone in the SEC West twice like y'all don't. SO QUIT COMPLAINING ABOUT OUR SCHEDULE!

The only people crowing "weak schedule" are the clowns

who think you have to play teams with "SEC" patches sewn all over their uniforms all the way down to their jock straps in order to have strong opponents.

The truth is I would feel better about our chances against everyone in the SEC East this year than the teams in the ACC Atlantic. For that matter, Alabama is the only team in this year's SEC West that should be a tougher test than FSU.

When you're a legitimate top 5 program - and we definitely are - then by definition your schedule should be loaded with weaker opponents than your team. Doesn't matter who you play.

The perceived weakness of our schedule is totally due to our weak SECick opponents.

Agreed

Our division and the SEC West are two of the best divisions in the country. Personally I believe at the present time the Atlantic has a better top 3, it is just weaker at the bottom.

Place that with the conference championship and there is no true weakness to be talked about, just bias, imo. As mentioned earlier, it is not our fault AU and USuCk are where they are.

B1G is a joke as a whole, the Big 12 doesn't have a title game/Baylor's demise/we have already exposed OU two years in a row (would do so again this year), which basically leaves the PAC to talk about besides the ACC/SEC.

Also, Auburn may be good.*****

I hate the preseason SOS talk...

Auburn is liable to wind up a top 10-15 team maybe even better....GT usually puts together a good season every 2-3 years. Wasn't too long ago they smacked Miss St. in the Orange bowl.

Our schedule is just as respectable as anybody's....

difficult schedule. Playing at FSU is about as hard as it gets short of maybe playing Bama in Tuscaloosa, but the rest looks to be pretty manageable. Auburn wasn't scary last year, GT stunk, we get Louisville at home, we don't have to play in Raleigh and be "that game" for NCST where they play out of their minds at home against a top 10 team. That said, if GT and Auburn are closer to their 2013/2014 versions it's a much more difficult schedule.

But really, it doesn't matter. It's still a power 5 schedule, not a group of 5 schedule. It's a good enough schedule to make us a 100% lock for the playoff at 12-0 and at least keep us in the discussion at 11-1 provided the 1 loss doesn't prevent us from winning the division and the conference.

Sure we might not get the benefit of the doubt at 11-1 like an SEC West team would, but more often than not they really do have the schedule to back it up. But on the other side of the coin, having a slightly easier schedule means a higher chance of winning an extra game.

I think Bill Connolly (really smart guy that writes on SB Nation) said that the difference b/t Alabama's schedule and Clemson's schedule last year was about a game or so. Basically if we performed at a similar level with their schedule we would've been 11-1 just like them and of course still made the playoff. It's not like the Coots make it out to be where we would suddenly be 4-4 or 5-3 in the mighty SEC.
