immediately, in a split second, knowi what you are supposed to do. Obviously QB is first, but who is second, OL or CB?

OL and LB would be my reply on both sides of the ball. TE and Safety would be my next two though with TEs it depends a lot on what kind of offense they are operating in.

OL can be extremely difficult against a complex defense.

especially for the guards. Defensive end also has a ton of responsibilities that can change once the ball is snapped.

actually set up an interception by the ending the play and positioning the DB as the play was happening.
Middle Linebacker is the QB of the defense. That’s why we were so much less effective when Skalski got ejected.
So,glad he’s back.
Now if he can just keep himself in be game ... ??

I was thinking about how much the defense changed for the worse when Skalski wasn't in the game. My answer to the question is middle linebacker.

Definitely linebacker. Played Mike in HS and college and it's different because the DL knows what the DL does (run fits and gap assignments) and DBs have run fits, but are expected to play pass first, and also most of the time have no idea what DL stunts are going on. Only know their run fit and coverage. They also don't make calls in most defenses, so they don't have to think pre snap about what play or check to call. LBS, typically the Mike, have to call the defense and make checks in real time based on the offense, know what the DL is stunting, what run gap fits they have, and what receiver/zone they're covering. They span multiple levels where DBs and DL don't. (DBs more, but still not nearly as much. Yet send one receiver in motion for 1.5 seconds and the call can change instantly. It's equivalent to a QB calling a play, lining up, and the defense rolls down a safety or brings another edge rusher at the snap. Most positions aren't thinking on your feet like this. It's also why I struggled, because I needed tons of repetition to get checks down, and never had enough opportunities (reps during practice). Believe it or not, the actual skill of playing isn't the hardest part at all. At this level most people can run and tackle. It's how quick you respond and how confident you are in whats happening that separate most guys. It's also why guys like Bouleware can play at a high level. His play recognition it so freaking fast he can be slower and get there at the same time as the faster LBS. (Example: ND goalline stop)

OL do that every single play. The blocking assignment may change 3 times prior to a snap depending on defensive shifts, and audibles by the QB.

Right. Except the difference is you're blocking assignment is basically it. You don't care what route the WR is running, don't care what steps the QB takes, what fakes happen behind you. It's literally one level. One assignment. It may be harder to play, don't get me wrong. But it's certainly not as involved.

It's the only position that you have to use your hands and feet. As well as doing it in the right order. I've played with many of punters that have kicked the ball before they caught it.

OL is way different nowadays - used to be snap, plow forward, Ray Yauger for 3 yards - now, snap, back up a step and try to stop the likes of Murphy and Brian - not an easy call.

Thought about my list more and I agree with you: "TE has to not only know the nuances of the run game; but they must also know: protections if they aren't going out for a route and proper run blocking technique"!
The nuances is where this person has to be special in order to excell.

get back coach. On any play, you could cost your team a warning. If you fail 2x, we lose 15 yards, and a 3rd, Venables gets kicked out of the game.
Sorry, that is the most important position on the field.

Didn't realize blitzing linebackers, DL, WRs, or CBS couldn't line up or be offsides. That point is moot. Almost everyone on the field can do the same thing.
