I'd say it's probably pretty equally distributed over college football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So that's how it pays off for cheaters. Scottie, beam me up!

But drug use is a bigger deal at some schools than others.
At Notre Dame and Alabama, the teams that will soon compete for the national championship, players don't automatically miss games for testing positive for steroids. At Alabama, coaches have wide discretion. Notre Dame's student-athlete handbook says a player who fails a test can return to the field once the steroids are out of his system.

I have been saying this for 25 years since I was a college

Dec 20, 2012, 8:19 AM

Athlete. Drug testing is and has always been an absolute joke. Tipping off athletes to when tests will occur, improper monitoring of the tests when given etc are why these results are always bogus. As my history of posting here shows, if drug testing was legitimate then college athletic teams would be close to 90 % Caucasian. Not a shot at anyone but just the fact that African-American athletes smoke dope at a alarmingly high rate compared to Caucasians. I saw it in high school and in college and my friends that played in ACC, SEC, SoCon have said it is the same regardless of the school or level.

Until testing becomes legit then you will never have a level playing field, especially on steroid front. SEC schools are playing the system and as report says, you can't transform your body that much naturally.

Re: I have been saying this for 25 years since I was a college

Dec 20, 2012, 8:33 AM

This is not new. I suspected at least one HS athlete from my home town was taking it in 1962. College athletes were taking the stuff in the '60s. I wouldn't say it was prevalent, but it was done.

After I was out of Clemson, I decided I wanted to go to the Falcons open tryouts - 1967 or '68 if I remember correctly. Being underweight (even for a flanker), but with a big ego, I easily found a young doctor who prescribed Dianabol - an anabolic steroid in pill form. He warned me about potential liver damage, but had no problem giving me the prescription. I took it for about 3 months, gained weight, strength and speed, but the side effects gave me enough cause for concern that I gave up my ambition and quit taking the juice.

It's really not a good thing to do.

gets unmercifully criticized for his techniques. I have been a big critic but if he is doing things right for these kids well-being then what can you say. Until, NCAA steps in and punishes the schools that are steroid factories then he is fighting an uphill battle. SC didn't all of a sudden become weight room warriors. Yes, they got a new strength coach but many short cuts taken. It's is physiologically impossible to have the muscle weight gains that they have had and the rest of e SEC teams have had.

It's big business and SEC teams exploit the hell out of their kids for financial gain.

Re: Obviously, Batson isn't a believer which is great but he

Dec 20, 2012, 8:54 AM

In the '60s, the Clemson training table provided all of the steak and potatoes anyone wanted - 3x/day if you wanted it - and I ate my share. But - I didn't see much in the way of weight/strength/speed gain until I took the steroids - and that was almost immediate.

I can't say which athletes and/or schools are cheating, but it's likely that some are, given the size and speed of some of the players we see today.

I've found that white people smoke weed just as much as black people...and they pop pills and take stimulants (cocaine, amphetamines i.e. aderoll) at a much higher rate.

Can't really agree with your assessment.

Dec 20, 2012, 11:02 AM

Is whether you consider alcohol as bad as weed. Black athletes just smoke weed to a higher extent than white athletes. White ones drink more

Dec 20, 2012, 8:49 AM

because I believe they are. But just going by weight gain isn't a good indicator. These are kids that are physically maturing anyway, AND THEN you throw in professional weight training and professional dieticians and I could see how you could gain a ton of weight legitimately your first couple of years. Now if you continue on that same trajectory your 3rd, 4th and 5th years I would say that something is up.

how those SEC schools have such great S&C programs.

I didn't realize the testing was so sporadic. No wonder those schools are so great at 'player development'.

Please account for the percentage of blacks to others on NCAA football teams and the fact that blacks teens are much more likely to be pulled over by police than whites.

Dec 20, 2012, 10:19 AM

they get serious about drug testing in the NFL, why should college kids receive more scrutiny?

To me it's a case of follow the money. The potential payouts for a NFL contract are so high that, for a kid from a disadvantaged background, it makes sense to do WHATEVER it takes to try and make it on the next level. This is especially true for those who are on the fence with regards to NFL level talent.

Is there anyone here that can HONESTLY say that faced with the prospect of being an un-drafted free agent with a shot at playing on a NFL scout team for a season or two versus becoming a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick with a nice rookie signing bonus and a healthy salary, that they wouldn't get on "the juice"? Especially if that meant getting your family into a better home or a better neighborhood. Get real.

Now I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying these are the sort of choices 18-21 year old young men have to face. Honestly I can see why they make the choices they do. It's like the case of Terrelle Pryor from Ohio St. He was crucified in the press and on message boards like this for selling game jerseys and bowl rings. Then we found out later, that he sold those things to pay his mom's rent and her gas bill. Against the NCAA rules? Yes. Do I blame him? Heck no. Would I have done the same thing? You'd better believe it.

were soccer players, boys and girls, guess what both teams were 100% white. The only black athletes at my HS that did dope always ended up quitting. Like I said all races do dope, and that's no different as regards to athletes. There were plenty of white athletes in th NFL from the 80's to mid 90's who did cocaine.
