Sunday night insider: Swinney updates Trevor Lawrence injury, position on Bryant

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney says quarterback Trevor Lawrence should be able to work out this week but his status for next Saturday’s game at Wake Forest is up in the air.

about nonteam members. Also can we get a decent punt returner now? One who can catch maybe?

The punter had a lot to do with that. A 4 mile high punt gives a lot of time for defenders to get down there not to mention it’s a much steeper angle on the ball on the way down. Makes judging and catching the ball a lot harder.

Rogers gets no practice fielding punts like those —

He's been great all season up to this past Saturday.

The trajectory on those punts was unreal.

Our punter cannot duplicate it in practice.

We nned a football mortar to use in practice. Do they make those?

I wish. Seems like Spiers kicks low line drives so no one is down to cover the punt yet. It will be nice to see how much Swanson will help out next year.

I don't think you will see anyone but Renfrow receiving punts the rest of the season. And whether he returns them or fair-catches every single one is fine with me. Renfrow doesn't muff them.

Agree. Get ole' sticky hands to fair catch them all.

If we're switching out the best players at any given position, regardless of seniority, can we put our freshman long kicker in for FG's and kickoffs and move Hueggel to PAT's?

One of the things that's never talked about is the speed that the ball is descending when one of these all-world punters puts it into the 5-sec hang time altitude. When it finally hits their hands, you almost always see it go straight thru their hands because of that tremendous amount of force...More than they usually experience.

Amari usually does good. Maybe if we had guys that could actually block then maybe the punt returner could have more time to focus on the ball instead of 5 people breathing down his neck

Sep 30, 2018, 10:20 PM

Well I wish Kelly Bryant was still on the team. I wish they had left the rotation the way it was. But Hey what is done is done. I don't agree thus far with the coaching staff that feels TL gives Clemson the best opportunity to win. I it abundantly clear that TL can put up some serious points against Furman/GT/GS. But tough teams like Texas and Syracuse its a little harder to do. (just my observation) Personally, I'm glad Kelly decided to take care of Kelly. The fan base had already turned against him (just from what I've seen here on TNET) and demoting him was just to much to bare. From what I see it is really tough to play college football and even harder to be successful. But it appears we are going back to a run the ball offense because that is where our productivity is with tough opponents. Clemson's true success has been with Dual Threat QBs. Homer Jordon/DW4/KB. Success isn't winning the CFP. Success is winning the division/conference. CFP is success +.

Don't think it was fair to TL to put this team on his shoulders. I know everyone wanted to see him start... Well we saw it. Wasn't pretty and he wasn't ready for it. Could have gotten his neck broke with that hit. Appears to me that TL does best when he comes in, in the second QTR. He has seen from the sidelines during the 1st QTR the weakness of the defense and he had talked with the WR and coaching staff on what the defense is doing and how to expose their faults. Just my observation, but I think with his outstanding skills he applied them by using that Intel he received.

So to me the rotation worked best the way he had it... the numbers dont lie, but they dont tell the whole story. The numbers that got TL the starting job were better than KB's. But on that numbers sheet, where is the column for leadership/experience? There is no column. But those two matter most, and were ignored by both staff and fans. I had to get that off my chest.. Like it or not...

Now you can call me names but I would prefer a civil discussion on what I got wrong. If I'm wrong... I will say it.. I've learned from my 32 years in Army and multiple deployments to all the not so good places, that I will admit when I'm wrong and will set the record strait...

My take... Standing by for target practice....

Sep 30, 2018, 10:54 PM

You are probably right to some extent about TL getting some pointers about the defense before going in. I, too, liked the idea of having two quarterbacks for the rest of the year.
I believe the coaching staff has looked at everything though. I disagree that they would lack the foresight to just look at numbers and nothing else. I believe Dabo wanted TL to start this week for that exact reason. To get the jitters of starting every snap and it's all on you out of the way. Just unfortunate that the decision has forced a lot pressure onto TL. I hope the team rallies in the locker room. If our offensive line and running backs can take some of the pressure off him

Re: TNET: Sunday night insider: Swinney updates Trevor Lawrence injury, position on Bryant

Sep 30, 2018, 11:19 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Sunday night insider: Swinney updates Trevor Lawrence injury, position on Bryant ]

Well, Chief, the biggest place i disagree with you is that Dabo didn't give the team to TL. Kelly did. He decided that if he couldn't start the games, he wasn't interested in playing series #3-4 and see who's the hot hand.

When we found out last week that TL was starting, i forecast a drop in his productivity for the reasons you specified. Posters poo-pooed me. I was sad to see i was right. Game management takes more attention than just making plays, and the extra burden can be a lot to process at first.

On the other hand, the first job of a QB is either to make plays, or get the ball to someone who can. There is no shame in handing the ball off 45 times. But Kelly never would have done that. The way Cuse was crowding the LoS, KB could not have led us to that victory, either as the starter or in a comeback.

Most of the board turned on Kelly when we saw his attitude and then assumed that attitude was the missing link in why it seemed he never had a sense of urgency to correct his flawed mechanics and decision-making. He never believed his decisions were wrong, weak, or even inadequate. I don't know why Streeter let him get away with holding the ball too low, or never handing the ball to the FASTER, more explosive teammate, but he did. Kelly is not a good quarterback, but he kept us from losing 16 times. But with first team reps, I think Zerrick Cooper could have been almost as effective as KB last year, though maybe he doesn't beat Auburn.

Re: TNET: Sunday night insider: Swinney updates Trevor Lawrence injury, position on Bryant

Sep 30, 2018, 11:37 PM

Cooper had nothing on Bryant. Johnson on the other hand could have done well. KB was his own worst enemy. I felt it coming when he was referring to himself in third person last yr. But I figured it was just him trying to be funny or cool. Then when the change was announced I was thinking. You know it would be nice to see how TL handled the first 2 series. Also it would be nice to see how Bryant does in series 3 and 4 after seeing what the D is doing. And then when KB didnt show for the second practice in new then what I feared. KB was all about KB. And he feels like he is already there. That he should be untouchable. He said himself TL deserved what he got. But his defense of himself was he didnt get into or cause trouble. Uhh you not supposed to bruh. But you are supposed to show improvement. And he simply didn't and not just this year. But I will say he was rather impressive against A&M

High school friend of mind (keep in mind we graduated in 1985) said he was KB's coach and mentor growing up to present. Spent a lot of time with him. Said there is not a finer kid out there. I trust this my friends judgment on him. So, I will not judge him. Its easy for us to judge from the outside looking in. Do you think the same about Hunter/Cooper/Tucker I? Don't really think there is a difference in there decision. I guess if KB was going to leave he should have left in Jan like most of them did. To give the team a chance to build some depth at QB.

You make some good points.. Somethings I agree with some I don't. We see things from different perspectives or views.

But as soon as schools started charging to get into the games... It became a business. So, regardless of what we think on TNET, KB feels he has a shot in the NFL. If he doesn't, he will find out. But its a business decision. Maybe one made during an emotional event, but still chase your dream. If it doesn't work out, you can blame yourself. Playing behind TL the rest of the year and not controlling what you can control to attempt to make your dreams come true would be the wrong answer. We fans sometime don't see it like a business... We think of it like a family and to leave is to abandon your family. If you think about from a business strategy, what better way to sale a product (Clemson Football) than to have a fan base that is emotionally tied to it, love it, will argue about it, will criticize each other about it and most importantly, spend that hard earned money on it.

This is football. . . You better believe Dabo knows its a business... If Clemson is not winning, Clemson will bring someone in that can. So they better keep winning.

Regardless if TL is healthy or not... And I hope he is getting better from his TBI. He will play on Saturday. The pressure for team success will be too great. I saw that when KB started in Syracuse last year, hobbling around like a injured deer surrounded by lions. Bet on it.. No way they will leave it to Chase and the 3rd string dude. The reason I say that is because, staff and coaches say he can workout some this week... Really, after that hit and that reaction walking off the field...

Suggest they start logging all these brain injuries. Kid, is barely through a QTR of the season and has his first head injury.

Go Tigers!!!

Re: TNET: Sunday night insider: Swinney updates Trevor Lawrence injury, position on Bryant

Oct 1, 2018, 12:04 PM

I too believe it is a business. And so is the next level. I think the only one missing that point was Kelly.

Just as an Army Chief has, i have seen plenty of "fine young men" who failed to step into adulthood and responsibility the first time they were faced with it. The test then is what they do next. Do they make the life changes necessary to becoming a man, a professional in their chosen field, a provider for a family? Or do they persist in being happy-go-lucky and irresponsible?

With Kelly, we have to wait to see.

I have always, always, always gotten the impression that Kelly succeeded on talent alone, and people liking his positives. (Yes, i know he 'worked hard' but just like everyone else.) His demeanor between the Miami and Bama games made me sick. I'm the mean SoB that says he could have been an NFL player if he had sought out tough coaching early enough. Instead of branding his critics as "haters", understand that they are pointing out the flaws in his game that opponents will later attack on the field.

Ok, it might be too late to strengthen his arm. But if he holds the ball higher, he can deliver it more quickly into tighter windows. That alone will open the middle of the field, where the windows are small and a quick delivery is crucial. He carries it low so it can easily be secured when he scrambles. That's the wrong priority.

If he learns to read safetys better, he can make more long throws without throwing into 2x coverage. He apparently hates throwing picks, because I've never seen him throw into 2x coverage. But some risky throws are not bad throws, and some safe throws are bad throws. He must understand that well enough to play by it.

He must develop a pocket presence so that his first and second instincts are to get the ball to a teammate. His opinion of his own running skill might still be based on HS competition, not the athletes he faces now or will in the future. But it is his teammates who are on the field for their explosive skills, not him.

And he must learn to command his team. Being a leader means more than bringing energy and lightheartedness. It means moving your teammates when you see a pass rush threat they don't, checking out of a bad play, using certain moves to expose coverages, chewing out the center for snaps that make you bend over and take your eyes off the play. In short, the QB takes the responsibility of making sure all of the offense works. I'm not sure how he played with DW4 for 2 years and missed all that.

Re being 'a fine young man': i have 3 daughters. I have always told them that a boy cannot be evaluated until he becomes a man. A fine boy can totally blow it when it's time to grow up. And some irresponsible boys decide to take life more seriously and can become worthy husbands. That's why the relationships they have with mentors are so important.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I respectfully disagree. We are better off without Bryant.

Sep 30, 2018, 11:30 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Sunday night insider: Swinney updates Trevor Lawrence injury, position on Bryant ]

After three plus years in the program, he still couldn't read defenses, he kept the ball to call his own number too often, and he couldn't consistently complete passes beyond 10 yards. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the good attributes he brought to the team, but those weren't enough to beat teams that were good or great.

Lawrence obviously has the skills to pass all over the field. He also opens up the running game with our talented running backs. We wouldn't have had so many receivers catch passes yesterday, nor would we have had Etienne have a career day yesterday, if KB were still around. I don't think we would've won yesterday if KB was our quarterback.

Which brings me to my final point, and that is Chase Brice. Honestly, the way he moved us down the field to win the game, it was great. Granted, it was mostly handoffs, but he made an amazing pass to Higgins on 4th and 5 - one that Bryant wouldn't have completed.

So no, I don't think we need KB. He would be the third best QB on our roster based on what I've seen so far this season. And for the attitude problems he obviously brings to the table, it's just not worth it for a third string QB.
