Sadly I lost a great friend today. He has been going downhill for a while and I hoped that he would recover to his old self but alas, it didn’t happen.i wish you could have been around him when he really got on a roll telling story’s of his past. You could write a book about this character ... and someone will I’m sure. Just a country boy but he could absolutely amaze you with his knowledge of automotive engineering. Believe it or not, but Detroit used his knowledge to their advantage! Eighty eight and his last son just finished Duke law school and his daughter is there now!

Author Tom Wolfe writing for Esquire magazine dubbed Junior Johnson THE LAST AMERICAN HERO. And he was. From rags to riches, the hard way. One of a kind. Tough as nails but would give you the coat off his back if you were in need.
A movie in 1973 based on Tom Wolfe's article of Jumior Johson starred Jeff Bridges.

Every sport has it's legends and Junior Johnson will always be one of the great legends of NASCAR!
From TMZ: Johnson won the Daytona 500 in 1960 ... and had 50 career wins and 148 top-10 finishes. He was named one of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers in 1998.
"From his early days running moonshine through the end of his life, Junior wholly embodied the NASCAR spirit," Chairman and CEO Jim France said in a statement.
RIP Junior Johnson AKA the "Wilkes County Wildman"

Give me a foursome to eat breakfast with and he leads the pack. Always heard when he cooked breakfast at his garage it was the #### bomb. Best ham and gravy in the country. Don’t make them like him anymore! Good excuse for me to wear my bib overalls to the game Sunday.

I’ve been to that breakfast several times at his barn / garage at his new home . There was never a shortage of food! The last time I was at breakfast Junior gave me a package of Canadian Bacon that a family from Canada brought to him on their way to Daytona. He was well known beyond the south. He told me that he never watched the movie that was mentioned earlier. I really doubted that!

Several years ago there was an annual “moonshiners convention” in the county that was hosted by Benny Parsons widow. It featured Junior and some of the old ATF ( revenue officers) guys from the past. What a great time that was. Jr. introduced in blueberry moonshine at the last one. Mixed with lemonade it’s a great drink. Highly recommended by yours truly. But it in fruit jars at the local red dot store.

Even in his later years not a fellow you would want to tussle with. I have a great memory of him explaining to me the difference between Shine and ‘Mountain Brandy.’ BTW. What happened to the good old days of racing?

I remember listening to a race one time - Darlington, I think. Junior had lapped the field twice & was still wide open trying for a third when he blew up his Chevy.

Heard the story when he bought a new corvette from Modern Chevy in Winston-Salem for his wife and had it delievered. They took it to the house above the old race shop. Only problem was it was for his new wife and not Flossy. Flossy beat the brakes off that car with a baseball bat. Hell has no wrath like that of a revengeful ex.

Not sure about that story. I’ve known Lisa since they were married and she never drove s Vette to my knowledge . But miss Flossie was not s happy woman for a long time. I think her health is not good. I saw her a short while ago and was concerned about her,
