I'm scratching my head on this one. I'll say this. I graduated with Will Merritt. I knew Will from high school through Clemson. I never saw him drinking until after the end of our last semester and he was a mess. I told him I was surprised to see him out. He told me I had no idea what student athletes go through Between the pressure, travel, school and other demands. He said it's nothing like what we all think. I'm sad to see what's happened to Will since then. I hope Ian learns from this mistake. He's one of my absolute favorite Clemson athletes of all time.

a dude that's always done the right thing, made a dumb decision while reflecting on Will. I'm not trying to compare them so much as saying these "kids" have a lot of demand on them. More so than the average kid. I wonder if sometimes they just want to be a fugging normal student.

We should be so forgiving and understand when kids at our rivals commit the same legal violations. These things happen. I just hope while we want to think we are different, that we understand it can happen to any athlete at any school. One night of partying... Its the school where this happens 3-4 times a year, every year, that I see as a problem.

I know Will. Sorry to hear he is not doing well. Great guy. He was an awesome OG for Clemson on a great OL with Kyle Young, Akil Smith, TJ Watkins, and Theo Mugros. None of them were over 300 put they played much bigger.

What I remember of Will in high school is a JV vs Varsity practice we had. We ran a play, had a big scrum. Just a simple dive play, then I heard a squeal coming from the bottom of the pile. We all got up and Will was laying there with his hand on the grond and his arm a few inches above it. One of the nastiest breaks I ever saw in my days.

What D A thing to say. It's almost like there is no contact between Coach B and Ian anymore? Now that he is no longer part of the basketball team he's gone wild or something?
The kid made a mistake. He has to own up to it.

Sounds like he didn’t learn much from Brownell’s “leadership”. He will find out Dabo’s standard is different on accountability now. Good for him. Dabo’s lesson may serve him well in the future.

Nothing good happens after midnight if you’ve been drinking. If I’ve even had one drink, I try to get home before 10:00… preferably before dark.

At the end of the day, how many of us can sit in judgment of him? If you have never gotten behind the wheel after a few too many drinks, go right ahead.
I just thank god I went through college before the internet and social media really took off. The kids these days have nowhere to hide since everything is out there.

Super common in clemson. One of my best friends got charged with a DUI like this in Tigertown.
My buddy’s tires crossed into the double yellow lines on old Greenville hwy in front of Clemson House after dropping his gf off. Cops arrested him and then took him in for DUI. He beat the charges and I’d guess Schieff will Too.
The clemson pd is notorious for arresting anyone they can. Not to say Schieff shouldn’t have been arrested - but the PD in Tigertown is super aggressive.
DUI is a bad thing, but the clemson pd arrests lots of kids for a whole lot less…

If what he drives is true, blue corvette, it’s very hard to believe Clemson PD didn’t know it was Ian. Interesting.

Ian is 22 years old

And is starting his 5th year as a Clemson student athlete. This isn’t a kid that just got to Clemson. Ian was a great player for Clemson basketball but, not good enough to go pro. Dabo offered him a wonderful opportunity this season but, evidently Ian is not focused on helping the football team. With Ian’s background and age, he should be a team leader and role model for the younger guys. Dabo needs to cut bait and move on from Ian. If he needs a rehab program, then Clemson needs to help Ian get help.

Disagree with you a little what you said. Shieff would be pulling 6 figures in Europe or some other possible International locations playing basketball.

Absolutely, it’s going to cost him a lot more than it would most of us at that age because of his fans, sponsors and reputation.
They’ll be an asterisk about this no matter what he does for a short time.
Best thing he can do is make amends honestly and go to work helping his team, his leadership after failure could be a great example for us all.
Get back on that horse 🐎 and ride like the champion you want to be.(without the spirits you don’t need)

Well, If I had a nickel for every time I was pulled over for DUI, I'd have $0. Driving after partaking of spirits is just dumb, you can hurt yourself and others and shows a lack of maturity.
