I think it's important for the younger generation to hear the conversation between Coach Ford and the head official Butch Lambert at the end of the game(1978 Gator Bowl), after Ohio State head Coach Woody Hayes hit Clemson Charlie Bauman....the officials are trying to assess the penalty on Ohio State and telling or asking Coach Ford about what just took place, this is classic and a Great Read... Thank you CBProf® for the article( original article TigerNet)...... That same Tigernet article quotes Ford as he described his conversation with Official Butch Lambert after the play:
“When it came down to the end, I said what happened. He said that one of their coaches hit one of your players. I said, ‘Well dang, I don’t even do that. What are you going to do?’
He said that they were going to give him an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
I said, ‘I don’t think that’s correct. I think you need to do more than that.’ He said that they had done all that they were going to do. I was trying to show them that I was the head coach and I said, ‘Well Butch, I think I’m going to make history and pull our team off the field and cut the TVs off.’
He looked at me and said, ‘Son, do you want some advice?’
And I said, ‘Yes sir.’
He said, ‘If you don’t do something stupid, y’all are going to win the ballgame.’
I said, ‘Yes sir, Mr. Lambert. Carry on and let’s do it.”
is probably on the internet but Keith Jackson and Ara Parseghian both acted like they didnt see what happened and covered for Woody during the broadcast. It was obvious and 2 pros like that couldnt have missed it.
My wife (6 months pregnant with our son) and I were at the game around the 50 yd line, OSU field side but about 1/2 up the stands. We saw the whole thing. Woody Hayes didn't hit Syd, he thumbed him in the throat under his chin strap. What wasn't shown on TV - Syd collapsed on the field while he was running back to the Clemson Bench. It was the dirtiest that a coach could have do to an opposing player short of stabbing him.
