My opinion of Brownell

Feb 9, 2022, 10:36 AM

Cause we need another one on here today
??

Seriously, I think he is a good coach but as a coach there has been no growth.

He is the same level as he was day one.

He has done a great job with teaching the players to compete each second of each game even when we have a bad night.

His shortcomings are consistently recruiting and valuing offense.
If you watch the games, you can see his primary focus is defense. so much so that as soon as a ball is shot the other four of our players sprint to the other end.
They disappear from the end of the court where we are supposed to score.
Our offensive rebounding is atrocious and must be improved to win these close games.

I am not going to pick apart individual decisions that have not worked out because that applies to all coaches.

But in the over riding philosophy lacking is he does not recruit scorers. He does not teach for maximizing offensive possessions with crashing the boards because he is too worried about getting back on defense.

Those two factors cause losses in close games and unexplained losses to bad teams.

Recruiting is a long term issue but offensive rebounding can be fixed this afternoon - he just has to decide as a coach that he wants more second chance shots and have the boys crash the paint to rebound.

Personally I've lost all hope in Brownell someday becoming a good in game coach. It surely seems that he has always done the wrong thing in games that come down to the wire, JMO!!!

I lost hope years ago. I would like to see those stats on close games. My impression is that we lose far more than we win. Can't believe he is still our "coach".

I really don't think Brad's teams were well known for teams that very hard. Mainly trying to follow Brad's X and Os succesfully. Barnes and OP's team were known for playing very hard. They got more out of their teams with only high 3 star and a few 4 star basketball players.

Good clean thoughtful post with several sound observations.

Main one that struck me is that Coach B has not elevated his personal coaching philosophy or recruiting game enough to go up to that needed plateau to win more games or at least win a fair % of the oh-so close ones..like vs UNC.

Wish someone (calling Judge Keller) would do stats on how many games Coach has lost in last 60 seconds and had a shot or chance to win.

GoTiGERS!

I agree TigerBean. We have not had a true go to scorer in years but Hall is developing into that person. If you go back through history, the years that we have been a tournament team, we had a good inside person and an outside threat. Basketball has to played from the inside out and we better scorers in both. Will a new coach be able to recruit or develop those type players, who knows. As a History major many decades ago, I know that History is often an indicator of the present until something proves otherwise. For us to be a consistent winner, history has to change.

To your point Valley Boy
A friend of mine and I have discussed our ups and downs for Bball over the years. We figure the root need being at least three ”make your own offense” scorers on the floor at all times.

We have rarely had that situation

Elite teams have 5 with 2 or three more on the bench

They also have role players for situations, but never without at least 4 scorers on the floor

We have mostly role players

Watch us against Duke, we will take a couple of their primary guys out of their normal offensive game but K will just roll the shots to that 3rd,4th and 5th option based in matchups and get baskets anyway per possession.

Thinks about how many times you have seen posts saying we did a good job on ( top two players) but so and so that only averages 6 points a game put up 20 on us “If he had a normal game we win last night”

When you have one go to guy and a couple of streak shooters it makes for easy coaching against us especially when you’re facing guys like Coach K

since I admittedly don't know too much about basketball philosophy and coaching styles, it's good to hear a perspective from someone who knows more.

For me, it's just results. I mean I really like Brownell and when I met him, he seemed to be a really nice, sharp guy.

After the BC game though, I just had enough.

Brownell is a good coach. However, in the big picture of college basketball his 7 or 8 guys who play significant minutes have never been as big, as athletic, or as good at shooting as most of our opponents. He has compensated with a focus on strong defense. In general defense has been lacking this year because he recruited a offensive minded player like Collins plus the others just have their various limitations (ie inexperience, size, quickness). With strong defense his teams could usually weather scoring droughts to win some games. Not so much this year where we’ve seen some big leads squandered.

After 12yrs and investment in facilities, this level of recruiting HS and TP is what he’s capable to achieve. It’s not going to suddenly improve. Maybe a change at assistant coaching helps improve player development but that’s a risk and likely minimal impact because of the talent level. Hall is an emerging star and is basically carrying this team. One or two stars is not enough to be a tournament team.

Nothing is going to change as long as Brownell is the coach. Good coaches don't consistently blame the players. Why didn't Brownell coach Collins to be in the right place? Taking Hall out of the game was monumental stupidity.

My opinion of Brownell goes the way of the bobble head figure I have. If the head goes up and down after a game everything is o.k. If it goes side to side, me thinks things are not o.k.
Last night he shrugged his shoulders.

After 12 years - facts beat opinions

Feb 9, 2022, 11:59 AM

We know what he is, we know what he is not. Clemson has not moved forward (actually backward) since OP. Yes, OP left badly, but he left players.
If people are happy being also rans in a now poor ACC.
If people are happy getting to the ncaa every 6 years (with his own players not OPs).
If people are happy that fans have lost enthusiasm, that he does not connect with fans or students.
If people are happy that he teaches mid major “small ball”, does not recruit and develop inside players, and has smaller guards, and live and die by 3s.
If people are happy with unusual decisions like taking out our best player - who is also a rim protector - for the final possession.
If people are simply happy to run a clean program and be happy that simply beating the writers preseason expectations is good enough.
Then he should be given an extension. If not, then it is 8 years late, but better late than never.

The fact that you think the level is the same as day 1 nullifies your opinion.
