The "Thinning Of The Herd" 11/20 Edition

Nov 20, 2022, 7:39 AM

So much personal energy from people is wasted each week as they doodle in conversation on talk radio and the interweb about what crazy circumstances may take place that will cause chaos in the CFP Top 4 selection show!

Those people should read this post every Sunday. Why? Because the inevitable will happen….it’s called “the thinning of the herd” and I’ll post it each Sunday to help ease those of you that have this annual “fear”

Recap Of Last Week
Once again…losing is the story. It’s hard to go 13 weeks without losing. Once, or twice. And The Herd also sometimes offers up a sacrificial lamb in the Heisman race as well, just to appease their gods.

Let’s start with Georgia and Ohio State…two teams that everyone is so scared to play in the playoffs…prompting some in the congregation to actually post last week that it would be BETTER not to make the playoffs this year because we would get boat-raced by the Bulldogs or the Buckeyes. Yes, that 16-6 UGA win over Kentucky is scary. So is the 43-30 Buckeye win over Maryland.

Michigan muddled through a 19-17 win over Illinois, TCU continued the charmed life with a walk off FG to beat Baylor. LSU and USC earned good wins….the Trojans keeping the Pac 12 alive.

And in many respects, The Herd survived massive chaos by the skin of its teeth.

While The Herd could have been dented heavier, it did not fail to provide us 2 sacrifices this week…both in stunning and dramatic fashion.

63 is a number that lives in Clemson and Carolina infamy. Scar may have earned some of that that shame back by putting up 63 in a woodshed whopping of Tennessee. Now, the Vols can go and try being the prettiest 2 loss team in the nation without a Heisman winner.

And North Carolina crashed back to earth with an embarrassing 21-17 loss to Georgia Tech in Chapel Hill.

So the weekend began with 9 teams in the hunt…but The Herd has been thinned by 2 and now there are now only 7 in the convo. And that number is about to go down as well.

Next Week: Guaranteed Thinning Will Take Place
Michigan travels to Ohio State for what is sure to be an epic battle….but with only one team surviving.

"Upset Alert”
Public Service Announcement: Rivalry games in the south always get an “upset alert” when rivals take the field.

Georgia’s explosive 16 point offense hosts Georgia Tech in Athens.

The Gamecocks will try to handle the afterglow of beating Tennessee with a nooner in The Valley vs. Clemson.

A real contrast in styles….Notre Dame travels to Southern Cal in a game that can help Clemson in two ways…knocking out the Trojans and making the 1 loss look even better if ND can climb into Top 15.

Will Keep Winning....For Now
TCU has lived a charmed life the past 2 weeks…but they won’t need charm to beat Iowa State in Amon Carter Stadium.

LSU travels to Kyle Field….which should garner more respect in theory by placing this on upset alert. But the Aggies are a dumpster fire that Yell Practice can’t put out.

Final Thoughts:
I thought we would lose 2 from The Herd this past week and we did. We know we will lose 1 for sure this weekend…but I think one more is going to be sacrificed as well. When you wake up next Sunday and look in the fridge for some leftover turkey, there will only be 5 teams left in The Herd (unless you accept the loser of Michigan and OSU will still be in consideration).

Regardless…no more than 3 undefeated teams will be alive…and we will have not even played conference championships games yet.

Great article, Scott

Spot on. I think the question for us is will the committee have Clemson jump anyone currently above us. I think we jump Bama and now possibly TN. But I’m in the camp that Mich or OSU won’t fall out of the top 5 if they play a close game. While not everyone in the top five looked unbeatable this weekend, Clemson has looked beatable in every game. I think that will weigh heavily with the CFP committee.

RU4GOD2 we don't pass the eye test for sure.

But losing will happen...and losing helps us.

There is the Quote eye test from us fans watching the games every weekend. We understand this offense is flawed. Much of in my opinion has to do with coaching and the DJ just being mediocre.

That being said, aside from a complete egg we laid at ND, where for some reason we decided we could not stop the run with NFL talent all over the field against a one dimensional team, if you are looking at scores throughout the year it is not really that shabby.

There was the Wake issue where the secondary was completed depleted against Hartman. Then the Syracuse crazy turnover game which caught up with us against ND. We don’t get the pass for these games that other teams get.

When this team protects the ball, we got a shot against anyone in the country and should easily handle inferior opponents.

The “eye test” is geared towards good offenses. You can have a good offense, but we put the blinders on when looking at your defense. Tennessee for example. That defense has been trash all year, but they passed the “eye test”.

This Tiger team is not being given the credit it deserves. Not because we have played great, but when compare to some of the teams above us it does not make sense. Oh and committee RESULTS MATTER! No way 2 loss teams should be ahead of us. Especially the 2 that currently are. Bama has been shaky in allot of games and lost 2. LSU lost to a team we had blown out until we relaxed and let them back into the game.

Good points COTIGER1®

Conference Championship will weigh in on all of this the Sunday after next.

The key is to win. We still need help, but I believe help is coming.

The next two weeks make the difference and 1 team above us lost which may or may not be enough. Because we play Carolina in Charlotte and the winner will be ACC Champion, they were only relevant in the "herd" if we lose to them so they don't matter if we win.

Valley Boy I agree. The UT loss was huge for our chances. Cannot be understated.

I have spent the last day trying to figure out why the Herd was not thinned from the herd. Why did the refs not stop play to allow for Baylor to substitute when TCU ran the field goal team on? Since they did not huddle the defense is supposed to be given the chance to substitute when the offense does. I can't figure out why this is not being talked about. The clock does not stop so time should have run out.

Not only did the 2 get "thinned", 5 of the surviving teams had new and/or a few more "cracks" in their armor exposed creating doubt. The "eye test" raised a few eyebrows yeaterday.

Remember in 2019 when #1 Clemson WON at Chapel Hill by one point?

Nov 20, 2022, 8:36 AM

And dropped a spot in the rankings!

Pepperidge Farms remembers!

Any wagers on what happens to TCU and Michigan?

Go Tigers!

I remember and it wasn't the only time Clemson won and dropped because it wasn't pretty.

zxsam the only thing that would prevent us from getting into the CFP as a one loss ACC Champion would be for both USC and TCU to win out.

Either of them lose, we are good.
