When millions of college football fans tune in to the titanic matchup between No. 5 Georgia and No. 8 Clemson on Saturday night and hear the latter’s Memorial Stadium referred to as “Death Valley,” plenty of people will think to themselves, “What a rip-off of LSU.”
That’s a #### shame because despite LSU’s version (left) being much more famous, the one true “Death Valley” is in Clemson, SC (right).
(For those ready to call me a Clemson homer or LSU hater, I’m an Ohioan who has no reason to like or dislike either program).
If this were a court case, LSU would have to plead “no contest” to stealing the name from its counterparts at Clemson, as the story of how each became known as “Death Valley” has been documented multiple times:
Clemson: In 1945, Presbyterian’s football coach bestowed the nickname “Death Valley” on Clemson’s Memorial Stadium because of the unyielding heat that reminded him of the real Death Valley desert in California. Former Clemson head coach Frank Howard further cemented the nickname in 1966 by putting a rock from the actual Death Valley on a pedestal atop the hill above the east end zone – which players rub before each game to this day.
LSU: Tiger Stadium was allegedly called “Deaf Valley” because of the stadium’s deafening noise but, as former LSU sports information director Bud Johnson told The Advocate, morphed into “Death Valley” after LSU and Clemson played each other in the 1959 Sugar Bowl.
“No one called it Death Valley here until after we played in the Sugar Bowl,” Johnson told The Advocate.
In other words: LSU apparently first tried imitating Clemson’s stadium nickname, then flat-out stole it.
Can you imagine the outrage today if Boston College created their own “Touchdown Jesus,” Ohio University started doing “###### Ohio” or Texas started calling its student section “The 12th Man”? College football fans would be apoplectic. And yet few people realize that Clemson’s “Death Valley” came first, much less voice outrage over LSU’s thievery.

I have to agree with u. But everyone is kissing what is truely funny about that video. A reporter, who has nothing to do with Clemson, says to skie Moore that the chicken crow that's played so loudly and proudly over the speakers in shamecock land is seen as one of the most annoying traditions in college football. Then he asks Moore what he thought was annoying.
Now that's what's really funny about this whole thing. That reporter telling a shamecock player that one of his schools "traditions" is annoying. Classic!

I believe we will be very deep at QB. The 2 Freshmen are in the same position this year as our, now "Heisman Candidate" was last year, and both are very talented, just like DW was coming in. Also, from what I hear, NS seems to be doing quite well, too. Of course, none of us know how any of it will turn out, but I am not afraid to enter the season with what we have on our roster. I like our chances for every game.

(1) That he hates "WE TOO DEEP" makes me laugh and laugh and laugh. That's not a jab, that's a sign that we're in his head. To be totally honest I think it's kind of dumb myself, but it's also fun and the players love it so go for it.
(2) I think Tiger Band should figure out an arrangement for We Too Deep and play it CONSTANTLY at the game this year.
(3) "The Real Death Valley" comments also make me chuckle. That argument was settled a long time ago and I don't think any Clemson fan even cares about the argument anymore. Go run along and play now, Mr. Coot.

We all know he chased Tay Scott on the second TD and got his hand crushed while sliding harmlessly outta bounds.
However , on Tay's first half td run , Moore bit on the reverse play action and was never in the play from the start .
Of course , neither were his 10 teammates. Scott ran untouched to the endzone.
