Question for the guys with baseball knowledge
Jun 13, 2016, 11:07 AM

Just wondering what round or pick # is basically the cutoff to make kids come back to school? I wish Wilson and White the best of luck but am I in the minority thinking both would've benefited tremendously being coached another year by Coach Lee? I get it with some of the pitchers but these two middle infielders have me scratching my head a little. Best of luck to all our Tigers!

It varies, depending on lots of factors.

The two main factors:
1. How much money the team offers 2. How much the kid wants to go to school
The round isn't really important, except that it effects item #1 above.

Signing bonus money is guaranteed in all the sports...

Only rare exceptions in the MLB draft actually get a real contract. All the rest get a signing bonus, then make very little in terms of salary until they reach the major leagues.

Really hard to say

Some guys need a significant financial windfall (mid 6-figures or better), others will jump as long as they're in the first 20 rounds even if it means they only get 50k to sign, it really depends on the person.
Some factors to consider are: 1. How much money are you getting? 2. Do you stand a good chance of improving your stock if you come back? (seniors generally have less bargaining power because they don't have the option of going back to college) 3. Did you already graduate? If you have a degree you might not care as much about coming back. 4. How are your grades? If you're in danger of being ineligible you're a lot more likely to leave. 5. Do you have a hot girlfriend, and is she still in school or did she graduate? (a serious consideration for many) 6. How old are you? If you're older because of injury/redshirting/got held back in the 3rd grade you might jump because you only have so many years to make it to the bigs.
There are a million other factors but those are the ones I thought of off the top of my head.

Leverage.
The single biggest factor with respect to Going or Not Going is leverage.
You can be a 1st All-American as a Senior, get drafted late and get a really poor offer. Why? You have no leverage and the MLB knows that. They hold all the cards. What other options does a senior have other than to take the deal - regardless of how crappy it is? Where else ya gonna go? Can't go back to college. There is no legitimate alternate league. Without options MLB is a brutal business.

These players leave the game at the college level, and enter into a business environment, which for the vast majority, does not pay much. Many players, starting out, will live in homes of fans/supporters who volunteer. My son in law left the game after playing very well his second year in the minors. He watched inferior players move up with no explanation. He saw the writing on the wall, and decided to start a new career, and thankfully, he has never looked back. Better to start over at age 24, than age 29. All of those players that were moved up have left the game as well. It's a business with an extremely high employee turnover rate.

You're making fast food level money until you get to AA ball. Per diem and ###### food along with long bus rides. Lots of free time, so if you arent driven, you may be in trouble before you get started. And you better not get dinged up....glorious huh? Chase your dream they say...i'd let my son do it in a heartbeat.
