Your Fav SuperGroup

All the Beetles and Stones are super stars, so a good place to start.

On this great porch day (near Clemson) I aint as busy as yall.

========================

Traveling Wilburys (1988-1991)

Maybe not the best group of al time, but the most star power of any group.

Otis Wilbury, Lefty Wilbury, Charlie T. Wilbury Jr., Lucky Wilbury, Nelson Wilbury - half-brothers and sons of Charles Truscott Wilbury Sr. "Some people say Daddy was a cad and a bounder, but I remember him as a Baptist minister" -->Lefty.

I hope some here enjoy my condensed version as I copy/past as to a super group some kids here may not have played. I have had fun on the porch with excellent German beer as it plays, so that is all that really matters to me.

George Harrison --> "What I'd really like to do next is ... to do an album with me and some of my mates ... It's this new group I got [in mind]: it's called the Traveling Wilburys."

Harrison's dream for the Wilburys was to handpick the participants and create "the perfect little band", but the criteria for inclusion were governed most by "who you could hang out with".

Lynne came on board. Dylan saw it as fun. Harrison drove to Pettys's to retrieve an acoustic guitar and then Petty wanted in. Harrison, Lynne and Petty drove to Anaheim to see Orbison perform at the Celebrity Theatre and recruited him for the group shortly before he went on stage. In Petty's description, Orbison performed an "unbelievable show", during which "we'd punch each other and go, 'He's in our band, too.' ... We were all so excited."

Harrison felt the need to clear the air on the first day by saying to Dylan: "We know that you're Bob Dylan and everything, but we're going to just treat you and talk to you like we would anybody else." Dylan replied: "Well, great. Believe it or not, I'm in awe of you guys, and it's the same for me."
At the time, no Dylan album had ever achieved two million in sales which this did.

Petty later described Harrison as the Wilburys' "leader and manager", and credited him with being a bandleader and producer that had a natural instinct for bringing out the best in people and keeping a recording session productive.

Harrison described the band's sound as "skiffle for the 1990s". The album defied contemporary musical trends such as hip hop, acid house and synthesised pop; author Alan Clayson likens its release to "a Viking longship docking in a hovercraft terminal".

Harrison was against the idea of touring, Petty recalled: "I kept getting down on my knees in front of George, saying, 'Please, it's so much money!'"

Harrison -- "I've always played around in my own mind what a Wilburys tour could be. Would each person do a solo set and then do Wilburys at the end, or would we all go right on from beginning to end and make everything Wilburys? It's an intriguing thought."

I think a tour would work, if we wanted to do it. I don't think we ever considered it, really. There were a lot of nights when the conversation would roll around to that. But I don't think anybody ever took it seriously. I think it would ruin it in a way. Then you're obligated to be responsible, and it's not in the character of that group. It would make it very formal, and that would be the wrong spirit.

Petty agreed that humour and self-effacement had been key factors in the Wilburys' success, adding: "We wanted to make something good in a world that seemed to get uglier and uglier and meaner and meaner … And I'm really proud that I was part of it. Because I do think that it brought a little sunshine into the world."

Petty said that one of the strengths behind the concept was that it was free of any intervention from record company, management or marketing concerns, and instead developed naturally from a spirit of co-operation and mutual admiration among five established artists.

Lynne commented that the songwriting process was relaxed and enjoyable:
We would arrive about twelve or one o'clock and have some coffee. Somebody would say, 'What about this?' and start on a riff. Then we'd all join in, and it'd turn into something. We'd finish around midnight and just sit for a bit while Roy would tell us fabulous stories about Sun Records or hanging out with Elvis. Then we'd come back the next day to work on another one. That's why the songs are so good and fresh—because they haven't been second-guessed and dissected and replaced. It's so tempting to add stuff to a song when you've got unlimited time.

Orbinson died in '88. Although there was speculation in the press that Del Shannon or Roger McGuinn might join the Wilburys, the remaining members never considered replacing Orbison. Lynne later said: "We'd become this unit, we were all good pals … We always knew we were going to do another one, and now it's just the four of us."

I always loved Georges work and the Wilburys. His songs are very melodic and he was a man concered with the state of the world as well as his music. Plus he wrote "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" which is a favorite because of him and Eric.

I’m getting into Cream lately. Turns out they were considered a supergroup mid 60’s because all three members, Clapton, Jack Bruce, and Ginger Baker were considered at the top of the heap. They really were. They got back together 20 years ago and played Royal Albert Hall. Spectacular concert. Dial it up on your favorite streaming app.

In particular, check out Stormy Monday. Crazy good blues. But Ginger Baker is a jazz drummer down deep and he lets it show. It actually works and is really cool.

Enjoy!

Clapton was in a lot of groups. It is kinda funny that one of the best ever guitar players made his big $$ singing. That is true of a lot, going back to Louis Armstrong. Most care more as to lyrics than music.

Will list some that I come back to time and again for extended doses:

Dire Straits, and ensuing Knopfler solo stuff
Chicago
Kansas - in my view one of the most underrated.

Love many others, but these as I say have real staying power for me.

Random others that I favor:

John Prine
Blaze Foley
Ray Wylie Hubbard
Gurf Morlix
Keb Mo
And in a category of their own - Sparks

Great topic Tugaloo.

Though they didn’t produce a collaborative album as a “group”, the Elton John and Billy Joel joint tour seemed to be pretty epic.

Bruce Hornesby’s stint with the Grateful Dead from 90-92 produced some fresh versions of their songs.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss = wonderful.

All these are now legend as they were amoung the best.

I admit to not reading all of your post, but if you are looking for a band full of nothing but individual legends and superstars, probably close to FORTY GRAMMY’s total!!!

The Bluegrass Album Band

Consider the legendary accomplishments of:
J.D. Crowe - don’t just think of the Grammy winning banjo picking. Think of all the artists he played with or brought along - Ricky Scaggs, Keith Whitley, Sloan

Tony Rice - one of the best acoustic guitar flat pickers ever. Grammy winning Great bluegrass lead, before he lost hi voice. His accomplishments with BAB and Tony Rice Unit are legendary.

Doyle Lawson - if you don’t know who Doyle Lawson is you don’t know bluegrass. He also served as a “factory” for introducing so many great performers with his many Quick Silver versions. Too many superstars of the genre to name. Look them up it’s quite amazing. I think he has won close to two dozen International Bluegrass Music Awards.

Jerry Douglas - one of the greatest dobro players ever - 14 Grammy’s! Has recorded with the likes of Eric Clapton, Dolly, Skaggs, Garth Brooks, Ray Charles…are you kidding me! 12 time Grammy winning band The Earl’s of Leicester was incredible.

Bobby Hicks - 10 time Grammy winning fiddle player with over 50 albums!

Todd Phillips - bass player 2 Grammy’s

Vassar Clements - Vocals, guitar. played with artists ranging from Woody Herman and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band to the Grateful Dead, Linda Ronstadt, and Paul McCartney, and earned at least five Grammy Award nominations

comparing the Beatles to the Stones, most will say it is comparatively even. But, here's the thing. The Beatles put out their entire catalog, as far as Amurica was concerned, in LESS THAN SIX YEARS, 1964-1970. 1970 is only included because of the release of the Let It Be LP, which happened after the group was already done.

The Rolling Stones are STILL rolling, 50+ years on, trying to catch up to those six years. As John Lennon said in "I Dig a Pony",

"I-I-I-I roll a stoney
Well, you can imitate everyone you know
Yes, you can imitate everyone you know
I told you so...."

That is all, Carry on!

One popular group is Fleetwood Mac.
Many great musicians have been a part at some point.
At one point neither Fleetwood nor Mac was a member. How funny is that?

Great musicians came and went.

Most know just the American years, but the years before are interesting.
The band was excellent and got some play. It was always in flux.

They hired an excellent guitarist in Lindsey and got the girl he was living with by default.
All in the band were good at their craft and individual superstars.

Make no mistake, having a singer is more important than just great music to us who have less idea as to better music. Being Blond is a plus.
