team ever. Let’s keep it real.
Many did, however, ask the question whether they were the best team ever. Huge difference.

I understand the line of thinking... even if it was flawed.

A Saban defense finally paired with an historically efficient, high scoring offense.. That does sound like the recipe for a super team. The problem was this Bama defense just wasn't on the same level as some of Sabans great ones and that's why they weren't even the best team this year, much less the GOAT.

yes there are espn links there. They were going to be crowned the best ever after they won another championship. Dabo gets it. The team gets it. Tigerfans get it. Joe...not so much. Why must you be a contrarian about everything?

Lulz. Nice cop out. No one ever said it which translates

into “the media crowned Bama the best ever, “ bbbut now it’s they “were going to crown them the best ever if they won.”
Even that’s not true. Some would but many would go with USC and Miami from the early 2000s.
Now, go back to your brainless mange sheeple.

I don't recall anyone calling Bama...

the best team ever, but I do recall several analysts, particularly the talking heads at ESecPN, saying this was Saban's best team ever at Bama which most certainly implies the best team ever.

Then let's put it this way:
Jan 17, 2019, 9:14 PM

By repeatedly asking the question, the suggestion was being made that Alabama may be the greatest football team of all time. It's easy to Google "Is Alabama the greatest football team of all time?" and see that not only ESPN, but many media outlets kept this narrative going all season long by asking that question. While that may be a fair and reasonable question, at some point it becomes a story that perpetuates itself; the more the question is asked, the more it will be pondered and answered, and the more it will be answered in the affirmative. The media, consciously or not, is helping create the narrative.
Now, replace Alabama with Clemson, and ask "Is Clemson the greatest football team of all time?" and you will see that no such narrative was created for Clemson. Yes, you will get a lot of hits, but they only begin after Clemson thrashes Alabama.
In the media, it was all about Alabama's greatness all year. Were they the greatest of all time? They may be ... cases were being made. Nobody in the media was asking that about Clemson. And they were all asking the wrong question, as it turns out, and the narrative it helped create was really, really wrong.

that they MAY be the best of all time, but that doesn't change my point.

How odd is this? You never heard them say or imply this, but I never heard anything else but that from ESPN. You sure we're talking about the same group of SEC homers??? You do realize that ESPN is designed with the SEC in mind - right?

Do you watch ESPN often enough to keep up?

Then you know how they proclaimed Alabama the best team ever. Year after year on College Football Live 'Is this Alabama team the best team ever,' became topic and was considered for at least one full block of their 30 minute and full hour programs. It was repeated many times each year. Not one time did any of the CFL contributors giving a negative answer.
It's like a true/false question on a test but the possible answers are yes/no. If you can't answer 'no,' then it's pretty GATDANG obvious correct answer is yes. The discussions which followed the 'Is this year's Alabama team the best ever,' were closer to the pagan god 'Baal's,' ritual ceremony where virgins were raped then sacrificed and children walked on hot coals to prove their worth than it looked like an analytical sports broadcast.

"Obtuse. Is it deliberate?!"
How about you keepin' it real for a minute instead OP...
They constantly posed the question as to whether they were the best team of all time and then had a mini-segment that displayed the supporting stats to substantiate the 'rhetorical' question. Same difference.

Other than Clemson's offense , who did they have trouble stopping ? Can you look at the talent level alone and honestly tell me that isn't an elite defense ? Maybe not his best , but I ain't willing to underplay what we did to Bama on either side of the ball .

Good point. I'm sure Bama gave up more points this year compared to what they did in the past, but how many of those came in the 2nd half of games they were up big in? Plus they shut out LSU and Mississippi State in back to back weeks, and held 5 opponents to 10 points or less this season, and 7 opponents to 14 points or less. Arkansas put up 31 against them, but Bama was up 41-14 at halftime, and 48-14 early in the 3rd. Arkansas scored 14 of their points on their final 2 drives of the game.
The only real games they gave up points in otherwise was Georgia and Oklahoma, and Oklahoma didn't start scoring until the game was 28-0.

Perhaps not, but the conventional wisdom on that was spread near and far among analysts.
And talk about putting money where mouth is. I fail to ever recall a Sportsbook paying out bets in advance on a team to win it all. Yet, one did for Bama during this past season before any of the championship games.
