I’m not saying he’s the answer
Clemson bball culture is like the Lions or the Texans of the NFL
I’m not defending JKs points either, but there is a reason that Clemson bball has only been competitive ONCE in an ACC tourney final in my 25 yrs of watching (and they lost that game to Duke)
Barnes was getting it done, but left for a reason Shyatt was awful OPP was gimmicky but exciting and won some big games, early NCAA exits and nothing really special to show for his tenure
Brownell is just another in a line of Clemson basketball coaches putting up disappointing results
I never bought the “disrespect” card this year. I was cheering for this team to prove me wrong, but our 10-1 ACC record was disrespected for a reason. As we play better teams, you see why folks didn’t buy into Clemson.
No disappointment here… just another season of the same. I’m always pulling for the Tigers, but I keep it guarded until I’m shown a reason not to.
Maybe we make a run right? I’ll wait and see..

Any comparison that does not start or at minimum lend itself dearly to the meteoric climb of Clemson University in the last 12+ years is absurd.

I’m guessing he’s saying that Brownell is the limiting factor.

a sports perspective?

Some refer to the tsunami that Dabo created as the Flutie Effect.
Clemson proper has ridden the crest of that wave.
It's where the money for sports such as Softball[$16mil in prefab dropped on Jervey], Lacrosse, Gymnastics have been generated. It hasn't just been an "all boats rise" for increasing those numbers, but the Endowment drives, the Academic & Administrative facilities, staffing, millions & millions generated through research grants all of which are owed to it. They just announced the coming of a Veterinarian School. In this time a shit-poor University in a shit-poor State has finally eclipsed $1bil in endowment. It was ~$250mil when OP was here. [Endowment per student is a valued metric.]
Brad Brownell was gifted an NC2A program, which he drove into the dirt. He's been afforded more resources than any prior coach, including time. Most importantly, THIS Clemson University is a far, far greater version of itself than any before.
He's failed "remarkably" to leverage all he's been afforded, including an unbalanced ACC schedule against many of the dregs of a once proud Basketball Conference.
A lot of good Clemson folks here got sideways when Barker announced his Top 20 Goal. They were concerned it was the death knell for any hope of resurrecting Clemson sports, certainly football. In 2007ish, magazines such as Forbes had Clemson ranked around 500. Look at it now.
The upstate, surrounding area, Clemson have all grown, much to the chagrin of some, but it has blossomed and become a destination for family, friend, business and student.
It ain't Podunk U in a Podunk town no mo.
A couple of articles that may flesh out some of this for you, since "Clemson's meteoric rise" seems to have missed home...

All of those things true, i would assume the Hope scholarship / lottery $$ plays a role in this rising as well. Dabo rolled into the HC gig about 10 yrs after the lottery $$ started to flow
I won’t cite anything bc I’m making it up and could be totally wrong

Yeah, I was about to say you don't watch much Clemson basketball, Purnell had us in the ACC finals against UNC and the refs stole that game from us. His last four seasons, Purnell put a solid basketball team on the court, and he gets very little credit

Nothing special about Oliver Purnell's tenure?
We were an annual tournament team, regularly ranked in the top 25, and able to attract recruits we never did before or since.

It was super fun to watch OP teams in Jan and Feb

We didn’t seem to have the depth or stamina to keep the pace he coached
I’m not dogging those teams.. Rivers, TBook, Stitt, Oglesby etc were fun to watch for sure!!! But, if you’re comparing the coaches resume accomplishments, what did OP get done that sets him apart? The first round win in Dayton? Hated to see him leave, for reals.. fans were excited, games were fun. The loss at UNC was excruciating… if you know you know.

Your posts are well thought out and lack the knee jerk reaction that is often the norm here. I was disappointed today and could tell that we were destined to lose by halftime. You can just feel it.
Short of an impressive run in the ACCT, we need to look for new leadership. The players deserve better.
