WW2 Facts & Figures

Realizing the number of WW2 vets still living is decreasing day by day, I began searching for some facts and figures. The latest info I could find was from 2017 but it did not show if the numbers were from early 2017 or late 2017. But here are the facts that I was able to retrieve.
16,112,566 Members of Armed Forces
291,557 Battle Deaths
113,842 Other Deaths During Service
670,846 Non Mortal W0undings
588,000 Estimate of Those Still Living (That's just a tad over 3%)
Of that number still living, I would estimate at least one-half have some severe physical or mental problem. Falls probably account for a large potion of the physical problems. Ben Skardon is remarkable because he has reached 100 in spite of the hardships, both mental and physical he suffered as a POW.
There may have been a few who lied about their age and enlisted when they were 16 but the vast majority would have been 18 or older at the time the war was over in 1945. so, the majority of those still living should be in their 90's. I have not seen the latest figures on the average number of deaths per day for WW2 vets but, I would estimate the number still surviving two years from now should be about 200,000. I hope to be one of those still surviving and still able to pester you guys and gals with my nonsense.

The tombstone of my Uncle Guy Simpson shows that he served in both the Army and Navy in WW2...Never knew that while he was living and i do wonder what the circumstances were...

Is it possible that your Uncle Simpson was in the military before and/or after WWII as well? Veteran tombstones usually have name, rank, service branch(es), war, etc. Some people switch military branches when their obligation is up and I served with quite a few that had switched branches. There’s even a few people that served in three branches.

Russians 40 million. One reason we waited so long to jump in was so the Russians and Germans would kill off each other. Herman Wouk wrote two very good novels on the war,"War and Remembrance", and "The Winds of War". They should be required reading for high school students now days, since history is no longer taught in public schools.

Searching for WW2 records and possibly records for those who served in WW1 may be difficult for some because a fire in the records office in St. Louis, MO, many years ago destroyed many records. Mine and my wife's records (she was a WAVE during WW2) were among those destroyed. We were able to reconstruct some of our info re our discharge papers. It took a long time before we were able to obtain our medals.

only 17 when he volunteered, and that was in 1944. He died at almost 90 and a few years ago.
Hard to believe there's even that many still alive today.

Thank you for your service. My Dad graduated from Clemson in 1940. He was an Armor officer in WW2 and retired as a Colonel in 1968.
