Rather disappointing read this morning:

https://theathletic.com/5236886/2024/01/30/college-football-top-25-rankings-predictions-revised-mandel/?access_token=11667894

19. Clemson (Previous: 10)

"Another portal cycle came and went without Dabo Swinney signing a single transfer — though he at least pursued several O-linemen. It’s harder for me to envision a 9-4 team making a huge jump with no talent infusion besides freshmen."

I was surprised at the number of transfers from Alabama to programs like Texas and Ohio State.

We should only use the portal when we need extra toilets for big events.

I've read a couple of these articles. Listened to dozens of videos and whatnot. It makes for interesting banter during the off-season. I can understand where they're coming from.

Most, not particularly this article, refer to the fact it's getting harder and harder to rely on just hs recruiting because of the portal and nil. Because you have turnover and players leaving. We got a taste of what most base their theory on in the Kentucky game. As good as some of our freshman are, they do tend to make more mistakes...

It's really an interesting topic. Anyway, not surprising so many left Bama. They'd have had a lot (by Clemson standards) leave anyway. Some players understand if you were recruited by Saban, the market places a ton of value on you, w h ether you're a srarter or not. So why not try to cash in on that. Hth some. Jmho.

"Another portal cycle came and went without Dabo Swinney signing a single transfer” is a lazy opinion ... Could/should we have used the portal, maybe? Who knows, not even Mandel can see the future. It’s a lazy take by a national writer who hasn’t stepped foot in Clemson, SC for years

For 50 years of my life, pertaining to college football, I was told that what mattered was Coaching continuity and experienced players. Now I’m being told that what matters is getting an experienced player that has never played with your team or for your Coaches.

I’m not yet convinced that those first 50 years were wrong.

Your first 50 years were entirely right, for college football pre-rule change. There was no portal and NIL allowing the richest teams to immediately buy a team or players to fill positions of need. That was impossible for your first 50 years. Players largely no longer value coaching continuity and culture. Now, teams can sweep in and buy our players. Three of our starters for next year are gone because of the portal/NIL. Not faulting them. I would also go where the money is best. But the fact is, things have changed, and you have to adapt to the times, or you'll be left behind.

I'm not saying you have to pull a Florida State or Colorado and buy an entire team. But every single team in the top 10 this year had transfer portal starters. Clemson has enormous holes on the offense. We have the worst offensive line in the P5, and mediocre receivers. UGA or Alabama would have found players early to fill those holes, not waited until players had their mind up and extend a couple offers so you can pretend you tried.

It's the difference between the long-term and short-term view of CFB. Maybe the long-term effect of not using the portal is building a culture that gets the reputation of being loyal to loyal players which in turn will make recruits prefer a program that is not going to bail on them for a marginally better portal player. It could mean that over time Clemson's recruiting classes and retention will just get better and better as young players tire of being supplanted by portal players.

I have said this before. The key is having a staff that is superior in every way. No more grooming of coaches. If there is portal use it should be to get the very best staff from waterboy all the way to the top so that players know when they come to Clemson they won't be able to ever do any better in terms of their development as players. Let every member of the staff know that they are on the hotseat every single year. This in turn could make Clemson a target for top coaching talent to come to as well. Knowing that if you can make it at Clemson as a coach you can make it anywhere.

However, I don't run a football program so what I just said is just b.s.ing

The ONLY thing less important than this is: Seeding projections right now

for the Dance.

Oh - and with a tip of the cap to Dabo - the score at halftime.

These are the only 2 things LESS important than this "ranking" right now.

But some "sports writer" has gotta try & get clicks for his employer, right ?

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.
