UPDATE: Teams have lost to unranked teams
Oct 9, 2015, 9:12 AM
|
|
as ranked teams since the last time Clemson did ("C-wording" per ESPN):
I've been updating this list for a couple of years and recently many people have said this is a pointless exercise (I mean, obviously, in the grand scheme of things it's pointless anyway) since we don't have that reputation anymore but I think anyone who's listened to any CFB sportstalk over this week has heard the C-Word bandied about in regards to our Tigers A LOT after the big win last Saturday night.
E.g.:
http://seminolepost.blog.palmbeachpost.com/2015/10/07/acc-power-rankings-avoid-clemsoning-and-clemson-is-in-playoff/
http://www.fbschedules.com/2015/10/clear-your-schedule-acc-2015-week-6/
http://collegefootballnews.com/2015/college-football-hot-seat-mike-riley-byog-cavalcade-of-whimsy-oct-6
http://www.si.com/college-football/2015/10/07/college-football-undefeated-2015-ohio-state-clemson
Our "enemies," to borrow a phrase from Attila the Hen, are sitting on the edge of their seats to see us drop a game to an unranked team down the stretch this year. So I think it's important to remind people how rare that has become under Dabo.
On that note, enter 3 teams this week (an last night) who are among the worst serial offenders on the list:
Top 10 and heretofore invincible-looking UCLA got spanked by Arizona St on Saturday, marking their 5th appearance on the List. Wisconsin also makes their 5th appearance after losing to unranked Iowa.
And if anyone stayed up late enough last night, USC (the real one), made another record-breaking appearance this season as they lost at home to their HC's former school. So Cal has now dropped games 6 times to unranked teams as a ranked team since we lost to NC St in '11. Maybe they should call it "SoCaling..."
Here's the List:
11/19/11: Clemson loses to NC St

but they changed the definition

Clemsoning refers to any Clemson loss, or even a near loss. Or a blowout. A loss to a higher ranked team, such as ND, would have been Clemsoning. A loss to a lower ranked team, or unranked team, would be called Clemsoning. If we have a chance to win and blow it, it's Clemsoning. If we never have a chance, like FSU two years ago, it was Clemsoning. We have to never lose a game again.
It's a total joke, designed by ESPN to hurt our great recruiting in the SEC footprint.

Seriously, that is the height of paranoia. You think that ESPN cares enough about Clemson and wants to hurt us enough that they perpetuate the term with the primary purpose of hurting our recruiting?
Are they biased toward the SEC? Sure. They're biased in part because the SEC has a lot of rabid fans who watch ESPN and want to see coverage of their teams. Likely, the money they have at risk and the partnership they have with the SEC Network enhances that tendency.
They don't, however, have any anti-Clemson bias and are not doing anything to hurt our recruiting. In fact, I've noticed a general tendency for ESPN to rate our recruits higher than other services. I've also noticed that the other services tend to be more accurate.

Then why do they perpetuate that term? and why the heck can't they pronounce Clemson correctly? Also, why does Mike Patrick drink so much that he thinks our basketball coach is Brownlee?

The most idiotic post. We are where we are despite the fact that they constantly bash our program. There isn't one other team that has faced the constant bashing that we have and since there are many teams that should have to face espn's wrath, they get a free pass. Albern, florida, tennessee, texas hec even ND and both usuc's have underachieved for at least two years now. It's not like Clemson threw a wide receivers coach into the fire and made him the head coach at a major college football program.... No wait-they did. Think about what Dabo has created since he took over. He did it on the fly, while having to learn on the job. espn makes excuses for usuc for their loss of scholarships and Texas (just now) for what Charlie Strong has been faced with. Either start bashing other programs and stop bashing Clemson or ####.

The league's exposure nationally helps in recruiting and image. One of the reasons that this league has developed into one of the top leagues in the country is because they have tremendous exposure. I think we had the best exposure from a TV standpoint in their last contract and this one is only going to enhance it more.
When I say "Take" I mean I LITERALLY took Saban's statement concerning the 2 BILLION DOLLAR contract with the sec in 2008. Look for yourself: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=3553033

Keep the torch burning, Ace! I also note that...

So Cal is not only the worst offender. The Trojans are also the unranked team that has beaten the most ranked foes on the list. Therefore ....
SoCal must be the most underachieving bunch, to have that much talent and not be consistently ranked ...
OR the Pac 12 must be woefully over-ranked as a conference.

Most and least favorite parts about this post:
Oct 9, 2015, 10:17 AM

I love this post. Keep up the good work.
Least favorite part: "Maybe they should call it 'SoCalin'." They shouldn't call it anything. It's sport. And moreso than just being sport, it's college sport. It's young people playing a game with a thousand factors involved and a thousand things going on in their lives outside of football, and the idea that the team that gambling money thinks is more likely to win occasionally loses should not come as a shock to anyone. It happens to numerous teams every week. The most amazing thing...and the thing that these people SHOULD be talking about...is how Clemson has executed so consistently over the past few years.
Favorite part (aside from the overall theme): "Ohio State University, An." :-D Hilarious.
We all know that ESPN and CBS commentators will bend over backwards to make a big deal out of it if we lose tomorrow. It's like a mass delusion.
