"That leaves six at-large spots to fill and likely games played at the higher seeds in round one, with the top-four teams getting a bye."
So, more SEC teams get a shot

Money grab by the NCAA! They make more off of Basketball than football due to the tournament. It only takes 4 to get the true #1 team, beyond that is it just for the money. Too many Bowl games anyway, most are about half full (or empty). They all cost so much for fans, people just stay home and watch on TV. Clemson ends up with 3 road playoff games to win the National Championship. It gets expensive attending all three games! With 8, 12 or 16 teams the fans will shell out more money for semi-meaningful games. It is hard to look back to any season with 4 teams in the playoffs, and say the best team was not represented in the playoffs, or ended up as the champion. I expect them to go to 8 or 12 in a couple of years, for the MONEY$$$$. At some point, Clemson will want more money for home games too..... Go Tigers, Beat Georgia!

With Expanded Playoff More Bowls Will Be Truly Meaningful
Jun 9, 2021, 1:57 PM
[ in reply to Re: TNET: Report: College Football Playoff could be set for major expansion ] |

So MANY (I don't know the exact number, its complicated) Bowls will be designated as Playoff sites versus only three now (2 semi's and the Championship). This a win win all around. Viewership will skyrocket. The Mienke Car Care Bowl will have record rating (for example). Las Vegas will go nuts. This all good.

guarantee that at least 2 SEC and Big 10 schools make the playoffs AND to ensure that they both get first round byes. Plus since the Top-25 is so heavily weighted to the SEC and Big 10 one of them will most likely get a third school into the playoffs every other year.
16 team playoff, play the first two rounds at the higher seed home field. Final four at a bowl game site along with the final game.

Same for the ACC & PAC12 if they are competitive though

I think the point of the expanded playoff is not having those "guarantees" as you called them, though.
For example, including P5 conference winners in, that alone would be a significant change and without adding extra non-scheduled games.
Bottom line, the ACC & PAC12 could "dominate" the sport the way you're suggesting the B1G & SEC do now, but that's not the playoff's fault, so to speak.

I just believe that a 8 team playoff would be all needed to get to the best 4 teams in the country, then eliminate two teams by the 1 and 3 team playing each other, and the 2 and 4 team playing each other with the two winners playing for the NC!!! I believe the 1 and 4 team play makes it easy for the #1 team, and the 2 and 3 team are close to being equally matched....

spots! I think eight is plenty, with no more than one at large from any one conference!
Five conference champs and top G5 should be automatic, then just two at large, which can't be from the same conference!
If they truly want to increase national interest, absolutely don't allow more than two teams from any single conference.

years the cotton and sugar get the playoff games..fiesta, rose and so on are basically just fodder games..it was only going to work for so long with their games not meaning nothing...still think 6 is the best route 5 power five auto bids then a group of 5 gets in ..wit the top two seeds getting a first round bye

So, no Notre Dame

So that counts Notre Dame out forever
It's a complicated concept, for sure. I think the whole "power 5" thing messes us up, but then if we took your idea, we could just use the 6 teams but then the twelve would come from the conference title winners and another game, maybe the ACC title game or something. It's fascinating to think about, but I'd love a better way to get us to play ND more often rather than less, personally.

Nobody is forcing ND not to join, so to speak, albeit I'm not sure the ACC ever extended an official offer, but my only point is why it's complicated is all.
Playing Notre Dame would be great.
Playing Notre Dame every year? That would be brilliant, even outright determinant.

I feel like I keep taking the bait and when you ask me a question I'm compelled to answer you like a person would normally do.
I may be getting far too ahead of myself, but I sincerely believe the ACC as a whole will once again be one of the most competitive football conferences again, including with potential title-capable programs; Notre Dame, for example, would add that & likely immediately.
But it would consequently also add more opportunity in spite of, say, missing out on an ACC title game. Again, I'm definitely thinking forward a bit, but I have a hard time understanding how adding Notre Dame wouldn't benefit Clemson & the ACC outright, even being a determinant factor, absolutely.
Again, just my opinion, doesn't make it right or worth insulting anyone for. Hope this helped answer your question.

12 spots will never be enough for the "school" known as U of SC to even sniff the playoffs. However, no one can take the of away from them.

Everyone should have seen this coming. All of the teams that did not earn their way into the playoffs, started pouting and moaning until someone listened. I'm talking about Michigan, Michigan St., Norte Dame, Georgia, Penn St., North Carolina, Auburn, Oregon, and Washington just to name a few. College athletics is gone as we new it. In the future, you will have national champion with 2 or 3 losses while teams with only 1 loss will be shown the door. The best team no longer wins. Much like everyone gets a trophy. I guess this is woke crap.

You're suggesting we should play as many bad teams as possible?
I disagree.
I'd rather have a champion lose a close game to an elite team than beat a hundred Furmans & Wyomings.

I am already considering out of the UGA game in Charlotte bc of the aforementioned and cost of ticket for that game. I seriously doubt an expansion of playoffs would reduce cost of ticket at all. Perhaps even more expensive. Yet another reason to quit watching college football. Never mind travel cost, waiting to go thru security hotel room, inflation, gas, food, etc.

This seems like a simpler solution: Winners of power 5 championship games get in. Top 6 teams not playing in those games play each other in 3 games the same day as the conference championship games. Winners go on to an 8 team playoff using the bowl games. Yes, the final 2 teams play one more game than today. If that’s an issue eliminate one cupcake from the regular season. It really is a 16 team playoff because the loser of the conference championship game is out. (Sorry UGA). No byes - Everyone plays the same number of games (sorry ND).

Utilizing the Power 5 championships games only makes sense. That is takes care of 10 teams. I was initially thinking highest rated G5 champion and highest rated independent getting us to the 12 teams, but that rewards Notre Dame for not joining a conference. So going 16 with your strategy is good one attempting to take the next 6 best teams making sure one is a G5, but I would limit it like this. Only one other team from any power 5 conference and only if they have not already been beaten at their home by one of the two teams playing in their conference championship. Say if NC State lost at home to Clemson and otherwise went unbeaten and were ranked 2nd to Clemson they would not get in. Now if NC State lost to Clemson at Clemson they could get in. That way home games matter. The rest of the playoff is neutral sites like now. You may have some multi-loss teams, but there would be no room for excuses (okay, I don't really believe that). Doing that may also get more G5 and independent teams in based on ranking if you get to skip some of the teams that blew their opportunity.

12 teams seems like a lot, maybe too many. I don't like the idea of automatic bids for Conf Champions unless there is some threshold - whether it's P5 or G5. Remember, right now there are no automatic bids - all 4 bids are At-Large. Maybe even a quality win component like there used to be in the old BCS, which would reward regular season wins (and scheduling) One big benefit for the teams seeded 5-8, however, is the home game in the 1st round. Lots of exposure, happy fans, and $$$. On the bright side, I think it would increase the chances that we would play you guys more often, which I don't see as a bad thing.

A bye in football is a HUGE advantage in football. I think 4 is plenty. If they are going to expand, the only fair way is 8 or 16. With conference championships, a 16 team playoff makes for too long of a season.
I hate the ncaa.

My main issue is Bowl games. They are already almost meaningless with the 4 team playoff. 12 would make them absolutely meaningless. Because it will be playoff or bust and the players of the teams left out will forgo post season. It already happens now with some teams and I expect it to become the norm for everyone. Just drop and bowls and have a separate consolation tournament. I think players would be more inclined to play if they have a championship to play for. Even if it’s not the national champ.

So basically what this means is that all division winners of each conference get in, the best group of 5 team gets in, and a third Sec team/ND gets in! And depending on how good/weak the Coastal division is and the PAC 12 is then we could have 3, 4, or even 5 SEC teams in!!!
What I will say is that this certainly covers all of the TV desires…more SEC, ND, and the West coast teams/more of geographic footprint nationally!!!

I still think to be perfect we need a SIXTEEN Team playoff. Each FBS Conference Champ auto bid and SIX widcards ... much like the NCAA Basketball Model. Its complete arrogance, almost CNN like, to say there is no way say a Sunbelt Conference team could beat say an SEC team. You won't know till your try.

Of competitive semifinal games in the current model. You’re asking for a lot more blowouts and a couple of competitive games that will result in the winner being blown out in the next round. Zzzzzzzz.
It’s not arrogance to say a Sun Belt team would get stomped by a top tier SEC, ACC or B1G team. It’s just the result of paying attention to the history of college football.

Your wish will happen.
12 teams will satisfy for a long time but an increase from 12 to 16 is a very small, inevitable step.
Just be patient.
13-16 seeds vs. 1-4 seeds would very rarely yield upsets. IMO, far less than basketball.
