It's the end of the world as we know it... lol! Unless there's more revenue from the networks by adding them, how can this even be a consideration?

I agree. This won’t help Clemson, IMO, and it might even hurt.

Just say no!

Who wants potentially 2 conference away games that nobody will travel to attend?

The only teams that are benefiting from the "conference" structure right now are those in the Big10 and SEC. And for that reason, they want to keep it as it is. It would be in Clemson's benefit if all conferences were abolished and the NCAA created a national league with divisions based on regions. This madness has gone on long enough.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The NCAA doesn't have the power to do that.

1

Aug 8, 2023, 9:29 AM

The conferences have the right to free association and contracts.

The NCAA is toothless after they hit creamed on the NIL decision, and they know it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The NCAA doesn't have the power to do that.

Aug 8, 2023, 11:29 AM

It's not about the NCAA's rights. Individual schools have rights that they can grant to other organizations.

And it would be conceivable for all of the "power 5" schools to reorganize in a way that created a national league with divisions and oversight by the NCAA. That's what should be on the table if fairness and equity were motivating factors. But, they're not.

Teams in the B1G and SEC make a lot of money. But that's not the most important aspect of their deals. The most important aspect is that they make MORE money than most other teams. They have the ability to invest heavily in their football programs, which will perpetuate their dominance. Clemson, today, has enough money to compete with anyone. But, give it another decade and see where we are after making 100s of millions less than schools like Maryland, Rutgers, Vanderbilt and South Carolina.

I agree and that is an intersection idea of a National makeup with regions based on geography. These two teams just don’t bring much value in my estimation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A complete waste of time and resources that makes no football sense?

Sounds like a perfect move for the ACC.

What would be the point of adding another 'Duke' or 'Wake Forest'? No real benefit that I can see and a big down side in two more teams to split revenue. If Clemson wants to stay competitive in football, they need athletic revenue to reasonably match the revenues of the Alabamas and Ohio States of the world. Anything short of that and Clemson may just as well be satisfied with playing football in the second-tier of the leftover teams.

The only possible benefit would be if it allows the TV contract to be renegotiated.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Does adding these teams increase revenue from

2

Aug 8, 2023, 9:19 AM

existing contracts or does the ACC still get current money per year until 2036 and have to split it between 16 teams instead of 14? If so, it is best to keep things as they are - it is all about the money so why add any teams and get less?

I would call it the BCC---Bi-Coastal Conference--- the academics and Western recruiting opportunities would be massive and, especially with Stanford, would be national in scope. In sports other than football, Stanford is as good as it gets, with Olympians all over the place. I could also imagine Notre Dame becoming more interested in the BCC, since it stresses academics and has natural comfort with Stanford and Duke. The fact that all the schools in the ACC have looked at the GOR and can't find a way out really says it all. Of course, if every ACC school said goodbye to the ACC, who would that $120 million per school go to? It is hard to imagine ESPN suing for a billion dollars---not a good look for the network.

Just join the Mtn. West and be happy

Aug 8, 2023, 10:38 AM

Forget the National Championship in FB because none of them will ever have a chance. Let all the other sports get their opportunities in NCAA through the end of season tournaments.

Will it still be called ACC when you have teams on the west coast?

American Coast Conference.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, add a couple of leftover PAC-12 teams then FSU/CU leave

Aug 8, 2023, 11:20 AM

We need a couple of PAC-12 teams to fill the ACC void to allow for FSU and Clemson to leave. And, that should be the agreement...add two teams and no penalty for FSU/Clemson to leave.

Re: TNET: Report: ACC meeting over potentially adding Pac-12 schools, won't 'draw out' decision

In a way, this trend is setting up for a 3 or 4 tier college football system. With the Big-10 and SEC basically corralling more and more of the power football schools that basically makes most of the other schools also rans. So it might in the long term go to something I think college football has needed to do for a long time. Do we really need 120 teams that are technically contenders for the national championship when only 25 of them are actually given a snowball's chance in hell right out of the gate in the fall?
Would it not be better to eliminate all of the conferences and have four college divisions with a championship for each one? Let the top two move up and the bottom two move down for each conference each year. Soccer has played this way in Europe for a long time. It lets programs that get better move up and those that are fading move down and still play for a championship, still get TV time, etc.

Take UConn for example. Why in the Eff are they in the same division as Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State etc? They can't win recruits because they can't win anything meaningful. So why torture one of the big football schools with having UConn in its schedule?

Would it not be a much better league if teams like Clemson, Georgia, or Florida State had to play each other twice in a season and get into the playoff's based on meaningful stats instead of some journalists' opinions?

I am all for all the prominent football schools rolling up together into a couple of conferences. Ultimately it will be good for college football. Clemson just needs to get off its nut while it still has a chance and roll up with the other big boys.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hear ya, BUT

Aug 8, 2023, 12:18 PM

Look at UConn M&W hoops, or WF & Vandy BSB or Stanford winning the Directors Cup FAR more times than any other school. This is why I think it’s time to separate the Football divisions from all the other sports and create their own regiment for a National Championship (and scheduling).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That problem is, that should have been done before this

Aug 9, 2023, 6:10 AM

latest round of musical chairs started witu the defection of TX and OK from the Big 12. If we could boe back to that point, keep those conferences intact for all the other sports, but restructure football in its own league...all sports would be much better off.

The way it's going now just totally sucks for every sport except football!

Re: TNET: Report: ACC meeting over potentially adding Pac-12 schools, won't 'draw out' decision

Aug 8, 2023, 12:38 PM

It's making it harder and harder for Clemson to recruit bc of the money the Big and the SEC will have to entice players as a pay to play deal with the screwed way the NIL is set. We could be looking at the beginning of the end of our FB power!!!

Though they are on the wrong coast, Stanford and Cal seem philosophically to be a good match with the ACC. Both have had football success in the past. Playing more west coast games may give Clemson opportunities to expand our recruiting area.
