Gary Barnes … glad to have known him

I met Gary Barnes in 2017 (I think it was 2017) while having grits and coffee at Bojangles.

Coffee at Bojangles takes some getting used to but the grits kept bringing me back. So there he was with about five others each day … coffeeing and discussing the world’s and Clemson’s needs. Danny Gregg being one of their group, someone known by me for years, I was eventually allowed “in”. Having a Bojangles breakfast with them was something repeated several times over the next few years … always during the football season when I get to Clemson.

Gary Barnes was a very likable gentleman. To be so renowned and so welcoming … that’s special.

Gary Barnes was a fine man and an inspiration to many. I admired how he and his former Clemson teammate, Harold Olson, would meet at the gym on early weekday mornings to exercise, even in their 70s and 80s. Their Bojangles breakfast with friends after a workout was well deserved. Those men belong to a great generation!

Harold Olsen was a daily coffee guy too. A lady … named Cookie … also. Danny Gregg too.

Bojangles … almost certainly they still gather and will continue to do so.
