The teen son of my buddy is probably a drug dealer

Advice wanted:
I don't care if he is because A. He's not my kid and B. If he's slinging pot, so what? That should be legal anyway.
Here's the fairly obvious signs: He has his own ride now that he's been tricking out with his own money very quickly without having any other job. He's good friends with a known teen dealer in the hood. He's constantly coming and going now at night in that (very loud) car at all hours and all days of the week. He's also been #### good at sales in the past with legitimate business ventures. Finally, his whole family has been pretty open and lax about marijuana usage, so no one telling him he can't.
Here's my thing. I've known the kid for a while and his dad is a good friend. I don't want to see him get pinched or his dad to get nailed with anything. But he's not being very subtle at all, and if I can figure it out, it won't be hard for the cops to as well. We have a lot of busy bodies in the area neighborhoods who would probably love to call that in to police.
So, my question is, should I say something to his dad and suggest he go over subtlety to him? Should I pull the kid aside and make a comment? Or should I mind my own #### business because he's not my kid and I shouldn't make this assumption?
Advice/judgmental comments welcome.

suck for him to get busted, but it isn't your place to step in and help out. Sometimes you just gotta learn on your own and selling drugs is one of those times. Weed should be legal though, that is bulllshit.

Nah unless you are already a buddy of the kid, not sure how this would go. IDK. As long as he isn't carrying around a large amount or a gun, he's probably not going to get in too much trouble. But maybe it doesn't take that much. Is over an ounce still a felony?

He is doing this within half a mile of a school, so that's another thing that would get tacked onto charges. But very unlikely he's carrying a gun.

I don't see the harm in casually mentioning it, honestly. Would include the key phrases "IF that's what he's doing", and "I don't personally have an issue with it, but others might if they catch on".
The risks are that the father gets defensive with you because he doesn't know, or gets angry with his kid because he doesn't know, which might lead to friction in neighbor dynamics. If you see immediate bristling, talk it down with "again, no big deal for me, but just in case you might not have been aware, there's some potential risk for your son or you".
Or, just not say anything. Doesn't sound like particularly responsible parenting. How old is the kid? Some distinction between 16 and 19.

If you're close enough to see the kid's comings and goings, you're close enough to catch some 9mm rounds when the rival weed gang shows up in a territory dispute.

Mind your own business.
Here are the key things I picked up from what you said (which include a couple assumptions I made on my own)
1 - the kid spending money that he probably shouldn't have. This indicates the parents are aware of what he's doing.
2 - You said it's going to easy for the cops to figure it out.
3 - Parents lax about marijuana usage (and assuming they know as stated above).
If you say something to the kid OR the parents...they probably aren't going to do anything about it.
If, after you say something, and they don't do anything about it...IF suddenly the cops figure it out and act on it...there could be some blow back to you talking to the cops about it.
we'd miss you.
(sort of).

I almost got arrested for riding my golf cart, got yelled at by a cop for parking my truck and boat trailer one space over, and got told I had to take my beer inside when I was standing in my front yard.
They might break out the swat team and personnel carrier over a 1/4 bag of weed.

And told me he'd hate to have to write me a ticket over it.
Irony: about 6 months later the same cop was found drunk in his patrol car out by the airport with a bunch of beer cans in the back seat. He was asleep. He got fired, and literally--had to go back to selling cars.

They don't give a #### here. I smell it everywhere downtown (uptown). I get a contact buzz on my bus commute. Nothing like walking into the office smelling like you just smoked a big fatty.

you have a kid that hangs out with him.
Then you deal directly with your kid, let him know you know what's up, and have the convo with him. That convo in short has to do with getting fleas by laying down with dogs.
Weed should be legal, but that's beside the point.
Cops would LOVE to nail a low level hustler like that. Trust me.
One other thought: Why's it gotta just be weed? Could be all sorts of other droogs too.

Seeing that Alex Murdough stated that he was spending 40-50K/week on opioids, as an adult mentor, you should recommend that the lad relocate to Hampton county and maximize his profits.
Seriously, if you know, his dad knows, which is very messed up. Best to look the other way.

I'll be the one no one wants to be...
1

1. Your family may not be in danger, but someone's is.
2. Do you want to know you could have stopped a young girl form being drugged and raped, and didn't? Or that you could have help stop someone from getting an overdose, and dying, but didn't?
3. Don't stand out in this crowd. Meaning, make it known to authorities without jeopardizing your own identity. Even if the authorities can figure it out, and maybe they already have, it is still worthwhile to make the "possibility" known before something in #2 happens.
4. Maybe "dad" is a [ring-leader] that is one of the unknowns. KEEP your identity safe. Period.
5. Don't feel sorry for those you report, if you make the report. If it turns out to be nothing, your kept your identify out of it. If it turns out to be something, however, you can still be friends with "dad" because you kept your identity out of it.
5. If it turns out to be something, you will find out who dad really is too. It may be a friendship that shouldn't be.
I've had too many close to me ruined on drugs. See too many lives destroyed when they were far too young. If you are one of those who feels it is none of your business because it doesn't effect you, are your family, directly, well, then, why ask for the input?
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. - Edmund Burke

1. Not with this kid.
2. Eh, let's not jump to hyperbole here. Those two aren't comparable.
3. If you're insinuating I turn him in, absolutely not.
4. LOL no. Don't get me wrong; I get why'd you ask that. But if you knew the guy, no. He's clean. He just likes to be a customer.
5. I'm not going to sell a kid up the river to law enforcement for small time stuff at his age, especially since I know he's not a bad kid. I've known him since he was 10 and he's done way more right than he has wrong.
6. Maybe.

Just axe him where he gets the money for all the bling. His reaction should be the tell. Then again, he could have a rich grandpa that's unloading his money on the kid. Or, he's pimping his girlfriend for auto parts. There are many possibilities.

Find out what local cops consider a serious bust. Let the kid know, on the sly, how much pot he need to possess to ruin his life.
There's a good chance his daddy knows and there's a good reason he hasn't shared it with you.

into harder drugs. Or what is seemingly as harmless as weed, like a low dose DMT or MDMA. Then that rolls into the fentanyl category. Ver few prosecutors will go full hams in you for possession or even PWID, but you have your hand in an overdose death or a bunch of girls being raped, you are toast. For a long time.

Yeah, the whole Fentanyl thing could be a concern. Probably best to check in with his pops, without being accusatorial. Maybe ask more questions than give advice, at this point.
