ETN better running back, Spiller was a better game breaker.
When we had Spiller, Ford and James Davis that team was electric! Lightning!!! Any play could go the distance. They were a threat to the other team when they stepped on the field.
ETN, Trevor, Rogers, Higgins, Ross were some serious skill players tooooo....
Glad they all played for Clemson!

Spiller was definitely the more elusive fo the two, and probably had the better top end, hard to say. I know CJ ran around a 10.3 in the track which is blazing fast, not sure where ETN fell there. I think 40 times were similar, Spiller might have been .05 seconds faster which is barely a step.
ETN was definitely the harder back to bring down as far as YAC, he was no fun to tackle even if you could get a square hit on him, there is really no comparison here.

Etienne was 4.31 i believe. But speed on field with helmet and pads is a different story. Spiller always looked to be fastest on field. Remember the kickoff return where Jacoby Ford and Spiller running the field together. Spiller was blazing on the field.

Just checked.
4.41 was the fastest time ETN had during the draft process and it was during his Clemson pro day.

Elusiveness, Spiller broke more ankles. But, the next part of that, the breaking tackles part, is definitely owned by ETN.
Because of his ankle breaking moves, Spiller probably had more "WOW" plays.
Butt, really, you are talking about the difference between a Ferrari and a Lamborg-hiney. Both are elite, exotic, and beyond the means of most mere mortals.

They both were super and I’d take either one. For certain ETN was greatly missed this past season.

if you want to call it that, was an inability to stay healthy. He always seemed to be banged-up which is pretty common among RB's, especially in the NFL.

ETN was a lot better at running between the tackles. He had better balance in traffic. Spiller was more elusive, was more dynamic if he got around the corner or wheel routes. Spiller seemed to always have a hammy or turf toe and ETN was pretty durable, well until he got to NFL. I think if I was recruiting a RB, I would take ETN by a slight edge.
The running back that never got his fair credit was Andre Ellington. Not that I would take hime over Spiller or ETN, but he was a pretty solid combo of those two guys.

What about James Davis??! 1. Spiller 2. James Davis 3. James Davis 4. Bonus - Acceleration - James Davis.
Spiller is/was a boss for sure and was always exciting to watch. But I was always partial to JD. The most exciting football I've watched was when we had Davis, Spiller and Jacoby slicing other teams up.

on him to make the hole make the play, make the yards. Just think if he had a QB like Trevor or Deshaun to take the pressure off of him for just 1 season. Could you imagine the stats he would've put up.

1. Spiller had probably the best game speed I've seen.
ETN ain't slow but Spiller was a speed demon once he got into the open field.
2. Spiller for elusiveness ; ETN for breaking tackles
3. ETN -- Spiller was a space guy as ETN was better between the tackles.
Bonus -- Spiller.
I feel like half of Tigernet forgets just how electric CJ Spiller was -- go watch some highlights.
ETN ain't chopped liver, definitely had some fun plays to watch, and if I had to pick a pure RB to do it all he'd be top pick but Spiller took souls and has probably one of the best highlight reels you can watch.

ETN and not really close. Using your criteria as everyone has stated, cj. Better back, ETN. He blocks, and catches. Kinda hard to compare imo because two different offenses. ETN should have a long career in NFL. By most accounts, cj was a bust in the NFL based on being top 10 pick.

Both were fantastic; however when it came to blocking ETN whiffed more blocks than a drunk sniffing glue, and had little success catching the ball his first three years. The light finally turned on, he had a good year catching the ball his last year and finally learned how to block adequately. Again they were both great and were fortunate to have them.

Spiller had the speed, Etienne was better, IMO, between the tackles. Spiller might have been a bit more stronger topside. He had massive biceps. Things is I'd have Spiller out in the open and Etienne behind center.

Interesting comparison.
One thing CJ did that TE didn't is run back kickoffs and punts for touchdowns. And CJ did it amazingly well. Both had blinding speed. (I'm speaking past tense, since both Clemson careers are done). TE had more support with the qbs, Oline. Defense much better during TE's years too. TE better at breaking tackles, CJ better at turning quickly on a dime. Really hard to say one is much better than the other. I'll take both.

But Travis could juke you or just run through you. Travis’ ability to do both is why I gave him the edge in that category.
