OK, OK, I get the offensive changes but what are those poor student assistants going to do now they won't be holding the play, formation, and blocking boards during the games?

Will the savings go to #SaveClemsonMBB?

One can only hope the cost savings will be going into Brownell Buyout Fund.

What a huge difference this is going to make. Tiger football is about to become an unbelievably good experience …. For players and fans.

Defending the Tigers is going to be a nightmare for opposing coaches . Can’t wait for the Duke kickoff. Let’s out play AND out fan the Blue Devils.

One thing that is a done deal that I'm so glad of, and that's we the T-Net fans won't have to be crying about how slow the play calling is coming down out of the press box. All that crying will be gone for a while at least. I often wondered why did the same game that has been played for about 100 years had to be so complicated.

offense had gotten bogged down, essentially "Paralysis by Analysis". Each successive guy after Chad Morris stacked on little bits here and there, onto what was already a complicated system, until it got too unwieldy to function at its highest level.

Now, that being said, if we had a quarterback pulling the trigger the last two years who was a consistently good passer, these issues would have remained in the background. The fact that DJ had trouble pulling the trigger even once he made a decision, just exacerbated the playcalling situation.

EXECUTION: I am in favor of it, on the football field and elsewhere.

Blessings in disguise. Been many a post since 2019 discussing this very topic. Even though Trevor and Travis masked the problems. And I think we're turning the corner on another sore point, the oline. I certainly can't remember being this excited about a season opener since dw4 sophomore year.

That's bc when a coach leaves for better opportunities, and when the replacement comes in they want to fix what was never broken. MY opinion is that nothing should be fixed when it wasn't broken, and that's what was being attempted with Elliott, and then Streeter, and between them both they really broke it!!! It all goes back to the saying that if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it!!!

Chad Morris turned me against him with his always looking to leave for greener grasses, but, I would have loved to have seen what he could have done with DW4 and TL16!!!

I’m pleasantly surprised that Dabo is letting Riley run the offense. Dabo has plenty of other things on his plate, and doesn’t need to micromanage the offense.

I’m confident that our offense will be much better this year.

I wish we would pay Dabo another $2M to run the basketball program too. I bet he has us in the NCAA in a year.

How will we troll laptop Dave if we dont have signs?

I remember last year when all the keyboard coaches on T-net wanted our DC to be in the booth rather than on the field as they argued it would be much better for him to see the field. Wondering if they will push for Riley to be in the box as well?

I'm such a Stan for Garrett Riley

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The guy in the press box still has a job.

3

Mar 31, 2023, 9:52 AM

Immediately as the whistle blows for the end of the play, he gives Riley the down, distance and yardline. The quicker Riley gets the info, the quicker he can signal the play in. He can slow down if he wants to, but he can also go fast.

What Riley wants to hear from the guy is "2nd and 6 at the 34." Silence. "1st and ten at our 48." Silence. "2nd and 4 from the 46."

Two rules.
1. It better be accurate.
2. It better be quick.

If you're running up-tempo, a 2 second delay in telling Riley the information can be the difference between a DB being in position at the snap or out of position.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yes, but not exactly

2

Mar 31, 2023, 11:11 AM

As a guy who's been the "guy in the press box" (at a much lower level), down and distance is something that gets relayed to the coach... but the most important info is play development, defensive scheme, etc: "the DB bit on that one", or "Williams isn't going to beat 88 on the post, need to hit it right to left."

You see things from up there that are far more important than down and distance.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

..:: ru4god2 ::..

Agree, I wasn't clear.

Mar 31, 2023, 2:42 PM

Down and distance isn't his only job. But, it is the first job when an up-tempo offense is run. After getting the play call in the OC can ask the guy questions. The guy in the box can give quick info. "Safeties are cheating to the oustide." "#24 tends to bite on the first move." Etc.

And, during timeouts and while the D is on the field they can have more detailed conversations. But, down and distant is the first thing the playcaller wants in an uptempo offense.

Re: Agree, I wasn't clear.

There’s a lot of guys in the box at this level and they all have specific things to look for. But the personnel on the defensive side and their formation is determined (or best guessed) before they call the play.

I wish Richardson would stop referencing his high school success days. He won because he had superior talent and was running a system that no one had ever seen before. It was new. Defenses have made adjustments.

This will be Riley’s offense, not what Richardson ran 10 years ago in high school. We need to hear from coaches on the field, not in the meeting rooms.

Northwestern generally had a QB and receivers that were a foot taller than the defense if my memory serves me

It's my understanding that the big boards were used at least in some capacity to create confusion and a concerted effort to prevent our opponents from deciphering what we are doing on the field. Is there another method that will replace the boards ? Perhaps an additional person who sends hand signals ?

If our offense is being condensed into a fewer number of plays stealth in playcalling assumes a larger role.

I would rather Riley be on the field with the players especially in his debut with a first year offense. There may be nuances involved that he can better relay face to face with his guys.
Of course there will be help upstairs to tell him what they're seeing. I'm sure it will be a work in study until everybody reaches a certain comfort level.

I'm chomping at the bit for kickoff.

I feel like I'm waiting on CJ Spiller or Jacoby Ford to return a kick or punt. Some of you older folks know what I'm talking about 😉

Has been declaring Clemson’s run is finished are really going to be surprised this fall!

Even with some of the spots we need to upgrade on offense, I’m convinced we’ll be back to being a part of the best 4 in CFB by mid November.

Can’t wait for the spring game!

I can see why most DC and OC coach from the box. Have you ever stood on the sidelines of a grass field? It is so crowned for drainage that you can hardly see the other sideline….makes it tough to get a perspective of the game.
