Thank God I don't have to wear a suit to a football game...nooners are hot enough in a t-shirt as it is!

Granted, this particular game was not necessarily a hot one considering it was in November, but the September games would have been tough :p

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It did look like a Clemson student in a suit but I would

Jun 10, 2012, 4:16 PM [ in reply to Re: 1983 Clemson SCar brawl. i've never heard of this one before ]

guess it was a sport coat. I don't recall students ever wearing suits to games, but blazers and ties were pretty common well into the late 80s. I have seen students in recent years wearing oxford shirts, short pants and bow ties - that would have got you beat up in front of your date in the 80s. :)

Wow! Nicw post I never heard of this brawl. Thanks for sharing.

I was at that game..several other incidents...including....

Jun 10, 2012, 12:45 AM

...as the Tiger Mascot was walking close to the stands where I was sitting, a USC fan reached out and grabbed him and the mascot took a couple swings at that USC fan with the rubber chicken he had on a string. I sat right near the USC stdent section, and remember some very choice words that some Carolina fans had for the little Clemson crowd that was there. Also, if I remmber correctly, when the Clemson cherleaders ran onto the field with the big Clemson flag, a #### fan came out of the stands and tried to dive into the center of it. Anybody else remember that?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, was there....

Jun 10, 2012, 1:25 AM

Booster in a garnet blazer came running out and tried to grab a corner of the huge clemson banner that the cheerleaders circle around the field with...anyway he jumps in the air focused on a corner of it, the male cheerlead sees him, lets go of the banner, the guy catches nothing, hits the ground, cheerleader steps over him, grabs corner as if nothing happened, cops cuff him, drag him off. All Hell broke loose when Hagood jerked someone's helmet off. There were atleast 3 fights in our corner as we tried to make our way out. My first visit to the game in cola.

That was my first and last trip to that stadium,,,,,,,

Jun 10, 2012, 1:34 AM

...do you remember how Pell would pass out cigars to the players afetr a big win? Anyhow, after that 83 game, my buddy and I made it out to the parking lot and "lit up" as we were leaning on the trunk of his car. This USC guy beaded in on us and broke off from his group and started walking our way. He got like two feet from me, stared really hard, and then turned around. My buddy, laughing, looks at me and says "..man, I thought that guy was going to knock the $hit out of you...". Me too. About 15 minutes later, a Clemson fan is casually walking to his car dragging a rubber chicken on a string, about 25 feet from us. All of a sudden there a lot of shouting and a USC fan justs runs over the Clemson guy, knocks him down, and then a bunch of people (security?) tackle the USC fan. I never seen so many incidents at one game...

Suddenly, I feel like I owe about half the Tiger fans on

Jun 10, 2012, 1:39 AM

Tigernet an apology.

This post made me realize (again) that a significant number of posters on this website have Tiger memories that barely go back to the 80's. Or whose Clemson relationship--whether as a child or a student--began in those heady days under Coach Ford's tutelage. I forget that I frequently read opinions on Tigernet posted by those who've hardly been aware of Clemson pre-internet.

Let me explain. There are a bunch of us fogeys who were regaled as kids with the on-field exploits of Banks McFadden, Bobby Gage and Fred Cone...... Those of us who spent significant amounts of time in Memorial Stadium long before there were upper decks---anywhere....our opinions of the ACC, of usuck, of Tiger sports in general includes such a different and wider view. And thats not to say one opinion is better or worse than another---just different. Times do change.

So, in the future, I'll make an honest effort to keep these facts in mind---if the younger folks will try not to roll their eyes when we reminisce about the baseball field being where the tennis courts are now, or going to basketball games in the basement of Fike, or racing home from church on Autumn Sundays to catch Coach Howard and Verner Tate on a black and white tv.

Go Tigers. (btw---one constant through the years has been a total disdain of everything gamecock--lol)

Another memory fromm the 83 game.........

Jun 10, 2012, 1:48 AM

....I was 20 years old and weighed a grand total of 145 pounds. I sat in the corner and the USC student section was just off to my right, I remember because I saw my buddy's ex-girlfriend over there dressed in all black. I only remember about 3 or 4 Clemson fans anywher near me. As the clock was winding down, this USC fan about 2 rows in front of me leaned over to his pal and said "..if I saw a Clemson fan right now, I would *kill* him....". The fellow looked very angry and very serious, and weighing in at only 145 pounds and not much help in sight I kept my mouth shut :).

I wouldn't worry so much about the younguns...

Jun 10, 2012, 9:51 AM [ in reply to Suddenly, I feel like I owe about half the Tiger fans on ]

they'll catch on in about 25 or 30 years. Somebody has to take our spot when we are gone. Then, some of our great grandkids will tease em about being old and they'll just laugh at the waste of youth on the young. They'll retell the stories we've told here and post links and keep this Clemson thing alive.

A good omen prior to the '83 game....

Jun 10, 2012, 1:54 AM

...drove up to Columbia in my friend's blue Ford Elite, somewhere between Hampton County and Columbia the car in front of us ran over a chicken and we drove through a sea of feathers right behind him......

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I had a south carolina student working for me.....

Jun 10, 2012, 9:10 AM

who got us student tickets right behind the frat boys.

After the game our cheerleaders went out on the field with the huge tiger paw flag celebrating and spinning. A south carolina fan came from the stands and tackled a tiger cheerleader from behind. Most brutal hit of the day. He was arrested. Another gamecock sent south down bluff road.
