Starting 5
Nov 4, 2019, 4:11 PM

Dawes Newman Mack Simms Jemison
Tyson and Scott to play a good bit as well.
Figure we play Simms at the 5 some and go small since the next 2 contributors will be Hunter and Hemenway.
Anybody know much about Moore and Grinde? Did they play in the university games?

Basically no chance we have this starting lineup. Simms and Jemison are playing the same position this year.
It’ll be:
Dawes Hunter/Scott Newman Mack Simms
I could see Hunter Tyson also starting, but otherwise that’s it.

Now that Moore is eligible I'd like to see

Tyson start. But I think you're probably right for tomorrow night. VT is smaller than us. I think Scott gets the nod over Hunter so we're not going with an all, true freshman backcourt. Hunter, Tyson, Moore and Jemison off the bench

I like that lineup but Simms is not a 5 by any means. Maybe against smaller lineups but he will get killed inside by anybody with a legit big man.

VT is smaller than we are

Simms will start at 5 all year. He's 6'8, 240, so he won't get pushed around. And on offense he can be a real mismatch with his ability to take larger players away from the basket.
When Baerhe gets back that may change some, but I doubt it. Jemison probably wont play much tomorrow as VT is so small. He'll get his minutes against teams with bigger lineups.
We're playing small. That's the plan, by necessity, and design. We'll play 5 out a lot looking for dribble drive penetration with kick outs and a lot of pick and rolls and pick and pops for Simms

He played the 5 all of the University Games and some of those teams had a lot bigger centers. He still battled inside and showed post moves which he really improved since during the season. At only 6-8 but strong he actully played that some when Thomas went to the bench last season. A lot of college teams are going toward a stretch 5 and Simms fits into that category. The hope is the team can stretch the floor and would be a matchup problems for a lot of post players having to guard Simms on the perimeter who has very good overall skill.

We’ve committed to playing small ball this year. He’s gonna play the 5 pretty much all year.

I never said he won't but that don't mean he is a true 5. Most ACC teams will have a true big man. Simms is All ACC talent imo but that is at the 4. Hopefully he does what he needs to do but I believe we need Jemison to be the player I thought he could be when he commited

True I just think he is a 4. We need Jemison to step up and be our 5 if we wanna beat Duke or UNC just my opinion. Ofcourse he can play the 5 and be effective on O but he is not a 5.

Grinde will not play a meaningful minute all year, in my opinion.
We will still have to be patient with Moore.
If we match what we did in Italy (minus Honor starting due to eligibility), then the starting group will be:
Dawes Scott Newman Mack Simms

Jemison will not start early in the year
last week's first 5 was:
Dawes Hunter Newman Mack Simms
C. Scott is the first guard off the bench and Jemison is the first big
but i could also see Tyson coming in early

Thanks for the reply without being a ###### lol. I think Jemison needs to step his game up if we want to compete in the ACC. Maybe I am wrong but I believe having a true big man is key to winning in this conference.

can't argue with that.
the Tigers will be so much better if they can quality minutes from Jemison.
he looks much-improved last week. looked fit and strong...moving better on the court.
hit a nice smooth hook shot from the middle of the paint - if he could do that consistently, it would pretty much be un-guardable
we will learn a ton about this team tonight

Ofcourse BB knows this team and will put the best 5 out there for us to win tho. I just like to have a true 5 and let Simms play where he is suppose to be. I think we have a talent club tho. Plenty of play makers this year.
