No doubt adding 2 West Coast teams to the ACC would be very costly to the teams that have to travel across the country. It seems like everyone is just totally against adding Cal and Stanford and it may or may not happen because University Presidents look at the whole picture. Consider a couple of factors the Presidents will look at.
Stanford is ranked #3 in the US News and World Reports list of National Universities. Cal is ranked #20 in the same list.
Stanford has won 134 National Championships in their history, more than any other school. Cal has won 113 National Championships.
Just to compare, we have multiple Championships-no number listed and Florida State has won 21 Championships.
Does adding Cal and Stanford make the ACC a better and more prestigious conference nationally? The Presidents will decide.

Making the conference is not a consideration. The only issue is money.

Hasn't Stanford won the award for the best overall athletic program multiple times? I for one am against incorporating the left coast. I can barely stay up for our late night starts on Eastern time.

If we want a academic conference, then we need to add 4 teams from the Ivy league. Harvard, Yale, Pennsylvania, and Brown. At least they are not on the west coast.

The travel aspect does kinda suck

But it is only two teams on the West Coast. One away trip a year to Cali in football might not be all that bad, and look at the travel burden they would be taking on.
And in other sports, maybe some creative scheduling could limit the cross country trips, e.g. scheduling away games back to back.

and basketball when it comes to travel. Football is once every couple years probably, and on a weekend, and basketball can make a full roadtrip to Cal-Stanford to play on a Thurs-Sat or similar. That's what the Pac12 currently does.
Not sure that once a year roadtrip to California is necessarily a negative for the athletes at Clemson, may even be a good experience. Stanford and Cal are the ones who really have to deal with the cross country travel issue.

I agree. Women's golf plays Stanford one day and Cal the next. Same with soccer, tennis. Each of them has to come over a couple of times to get everyone in. The BCC (Bilateral Coast Conference).

I read recently that the SEC may be interested in some West Coast teams in the future. I dont know how reliable that information is. But it has to do with being able to play games in that late night window that makes western teams somewhat more valuable than a similar school on the East coast. I heard Utah mentioned specifically. As I said, i dont know what to make of it, but its possible coast to coast conferences may be the norm.

16 men's, 20 women's, as well as two coed sports which is a BIG Reason why they have won the Directors' Cup 28 out of the 31 years is has been given, including 25 in a row between 1994 and 2019.
Comparatively speaking, Clemson sponsors 19 varsity sports.

While Cal and Stanford FB has been irrelevant recently, they both enjoyed considerable success in the 2000's (Cal under Jeff Tedford) and 2010's (Stanford under David Shaw). This near-death experience will certainly change their respective administration's perspective on the importance FB investment. If they can convince more California kids to stay home a la Marshawn Lynch, they will rise to the top tier of the ACC and ultimately strengthen the conference. Cal's record against other P5s in 00's and 10's:
SEC 3-1 ACC 4-1 B1G 8-5
Respectable!

You guys don't get it. The ACC is bringing them in to keep you here until the GOR expires. No way you have enough votes to dissolve the ACC with the left wing liberals brought in. They're going to let you and FSU walk out for two teams that are totally meaningless in the football world? They don't have fans that attend games and have tv viewership equivalent to a high school game. Clemson and FSU is the direct opposite of that. No way the ACC is letting you leave. That's like the SEC saying we're going to swap SMU, Cal and Stanford with little bitty stadiums with no viewership for Alabama, Georgia and LSU.

When watching college sports, don't perform any research in order to compare academic standings, endowments, graduation rates, research grants, number of national scholars during the commercials, so schools successes in those and similar areas in or out of the ACC have little or no interest for me. Just spot the ball.
