So, my Son Will made it over the grueling 100 miles leading up to & down Mt Mitchell..even though something bad happened to him last night imho.
Unreal he's been walking or running since Friday morn at 4:30am and just off the course 39:50 hours later..
while I've slept 7 hours, watched TV, done yard work, seen a doctor, shopped, eaten 6 square meals, etc!
Oh, I appreciate everyone's support & interest..especially bretfsu who was my point man and cheerleader the entire event.
Congrats Son..Go TiGERS!

Nervous, for sure. But, that is part of the thrill of sports.
Give your son my best wishes and congratulate him for me.
100 mile trek over mountain trails, even in the best of conditions, is hard and filled with potential mishaps. If you can share, what problem did your son face during the night?

in his 25 years of running & competition (and at 53 he's the oldest he's been too).
Exclaimed he was on his feet, except for about 4 minutes, the entire 39.30 hours and said it was brutal for him personally but is proud of himself in not quitting.
Concerning my statement earlier that I felt something had to have happened to him (a fall or knee gone bad, etc) after he had nicely reached the half-way point of 50 miles at the summit of Mt Mitchell's 6686 ft altitude in 12.30 hours (4:30 am to 5:00 pm)..
it didn't make sense that it would take him 25+ hours to go down the last 50 miles even though it is slower due to more wear on the leg muscles, glutes & sore knees..plus one is tired and that last 50 mile run is in the dark for 8-9 hours.
Still, bottom line is he competed and finished and thus gets the same finishing trophy (Hellbender100 metal belt buckle, goodie bag) and certificate as the winner.
Congrats 1991 TiGER Grad & Son Will Willis~

From my limited day hiking...

.... I can understand that.
I've never tried anything close to what he did. But, I have hiked several hikes that went up from the valley to a peak or an overlook or something. A four mile hike with a 3000 foot elevation change up was quicker than the return trip back down.
I usually took pictures on the way up and was not in any particular hurry. On the way down I spent very little time taking pictures or resting. But, the trip down is just slower. You can't go too fast for fear of losing your footing, or the pounding on your knees or the pain in your hamstrings. Going down switchbacks, which I'm sure he did, were definitely the slowest part of the hike.
